Thanks for watching guys if you end up joining the 15 dollar patreon tier this month for the video, please let me know if you like the long lesson format! It's only the second one I've done and I want to be sure they're good / worth your money. So please feel free to shoot me a twitter DM with feedback or email me or whatever and tell me what I could do better. Thanks!

I love this channel. There are enough graphic designers, but not a lot of sound designers. Keep it up man!
Please make a video for the muted low pass shield effects on this video ua-cam.com/video/V2B6de1Geks/v-deo.html. Thanks for the great hints and tips!
Minecraft walking on grass and nether portal are super iconic sounds
skeleton walking and zombie idle as well
A lot of sounds from Minecraft are iconic.
The cave sounds are the ones that deserve the most recognition
Nah, creeper hiss is most iconic.
Breaking wood/stone/dirt/glass as well
“The last game you played sounded amazing”
I JUST PLAYED PORTAL 2
hey me 2
And for me, Minecraft
Borderlands 3 for me
Oh yeah... _you_
I played portal 2 and before it portal 1 lol wot
And before it minecraft
You should do a series where you just have a picture of an Item/Object in a game you don't know
and have to do guess work to how it sounds based purely on looks
and then later compare your sound to the one in the game.
This is such a great idea
zobi haha yes! i would watch that
BRILLIANT
genius
Very good idea!
PlayStation (1 and 2) starting sounds. Both the powerup followed by the sound for the console's logo.
+1
The first one used "Distorted Reality" samples, that library is iconic all around.
2 is easy just put a wooden bar on all keys and shut the lid
My unforgettable sound effects a-
*creepy minecraft cave sounds*
So, that's the answer.
@@Homeboy969 shup
@@cart4092 you ruined it dumbass
They're actually pretty good
Gotta love the distant train one.
My iconic/unforgettable sound effect is the Femur Breaker sound from SCP: Containment Breach
good luck hiring a voice actor to say “hello, is anyone out there, please let me go”
I love the sculpture encounter sound
_drill noises_
*AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH*
*heavy breathing*
WHYYYY AAH HA
John Quigg you forgot the heavy breathing in between
Ive only found out about scp since the end of july/start of august
Any sound from half life 1 and 2 , portal 1 and 2 and scp unity and cb will be be on my unforgettable list
First Aid sound oooh lala
SCP-106's footsteps are both unique and terrifying
one of my favorite channels covering one of my favorite games! So excited for this one!
Its stupid how excited I get by a new Marshall McGee video. Watching it immediately on mobile. And with proper headphones on PC later. I LOVE your videos
You've done stuff like punch and guns and voices, and it might be boring but I was wondering if you would ever go into something like footstep sounds or just foley sounds in general
you know, the absolute best footstep sound design ive ever witnessed is from the game called arx fatalis. its old but gold, especially the sound design
Breath of the Wild had some unreal foley too
My unforgettable sound is the VATS sound. The distinct BEEP BEEP BEEP tells me i'm about to fuck some shit up.
I'll always remember the sound of falling down the facility in Portal 2 after weaking up GLaDOS. Very unique.
Your channel honestly has so much good insight into the creative process beyond just sound design, it's great. I particularly liked the bit about getting solid samples so you can't just blame the sounds later, that idea can be applied elsewhere for sure. Thanks for the content.
Didn't expect it to sound so similar, good job :)
The sounds for the orange portal always remind me of fresh apple juice for some reason. The 'splash' sound is what I love about this one.
I love all the arm Cannon sounds from the Metroid prime trilogy
Big same! :D I think a lot of the sounds came out of libraries, but the implementation feels so seamless and natural that they really feel like they came from the Metroid universe. Real sonic sorcery at work!
@@Cooldude112233445570 I've heard the power beam charge up sound mixed into the hulk buster armor's repulser charge
@@dissonanceparadiddle Oh yo, I didn't catch that! :o Gotta go check that out now
@@Cooldude112233445570 it's at least very similar
@@dissonanceparadiddle I think it might be the ice beam charge, but it definitely was Metroid Prime. :o
This is easily the coolest channel that youtube has recommended to me in a long time. Please keep doing these videos!
They're soo helpful for a film student like me trying to specialise in sound design. So many brilliant ideas.
To me, it sounds like a kick drum hit, but there's a loose piece on the drum's shell, and that gives a warbling kind of effect.
The most under-fucking-appreciated channel on UA-cam. Your videos have more quality, care, and skill than most channels with 5+ million subscribers. Bravo, my good sir. Keep up the fantastic work.
you deserve more popularity then you have right now to be honest.
Me: oh cool a video about making portal sounds
Video: *Laser Slinky*
The TARDIS materializing noise is very iconic to me... and just about everyone else in the UK
gonna be honest i dont even remember writing this comment
My goodness I'm loving these videos! It's a such a build up for me I can barley wait to hear the end results!
Wow this is super awesome! replicating certain sounds really helps you understand how sounds are made in general. I got pretty satisfied with the results of making my own portal gun.. even though it doesn't sound even close to awesome original
love your stuff man!
My iconic sound would have to be the Minecraft alpha damage sound.
Thanks for making this! I’m interested in game development but had no idea what I could do for sounds. But seeing u turn these everyday noises into sci fi is encouraging
As someone who is passionate about sound design I shall subscribe to you
In the describing the sound, I sort of got like a deep wooden thud followed by a white noise oscillating sound without the high end. Also, when it comes to instantly recognizable sounds, welcome to Brawlhalla! comes to mind
I think the most significant addition I would have to that list is a recording I took a little while ago from turning a stove on. Like a ticking.
Great video as always. Honestly this is one of my favorite channels on youtube
The Kingdom Hearts sound effects really got me excited at the beginning.
Love the new visuals! Thanks for keeping the show running!
Kelly Bailey is still one of my favorite sound designers and soundtrack composers, having done the all sounds music on Portal 1 and all of the Half-Life games to date (except the music in the Half-Life expansions made by Gearbox). He was excellent at all of the sound design that he did, a whole episode could be made on Bailey alone.
I want expecting this to turn out as good as it did. Usually trying to recreate something so iconic leaves an uncanny feel but you made it sound really similar. Props
Amazing channel! This males me want to take up sound design along side what I want to learn when it comes to making video games! Keep up the great work!
I really love videos on sound design. Great video!
Almost all of Skyrim spell sounds are super unique and instantly recognizable as well. I consider that game to be one of the best in terms of memorable sound design. There's a video that interviews Mark Lampert and his process in making the sound of Skyrim. I use that for reference a lot.
I can't hear the difference first time around!! You did an effin' great job!
keep the magnificent work up, always looking forward to your videos!
this is incredible. not just because of what you did, but the insight you gave in this video alone... great work my friend.
The feedback sound of a the resolved puzzle from Zelda. tidududu dududu~
This content is amazing man!
This is awesome! Great job Marshall!
Spaceships, guns, guitars... dialogue. Lmao, that got me
I'm still not fully convinced you didn't just stick the original sound at the end clip. That sounded pretty much exactly the same to me! You are amazing.
Marshall, i know you're a busy guy, but, please, post more videos! i love SO MUCH to watch your work. this channel is the reason i begin to work with sound design !
I would love to recreate "Shockwave" from the game INSIDE
My iconic sound effect:
*wood clacking sounds"
BUMBUM
YOOOOOUUUUUUUUUU
Soulja Boy I tell em?
@@scrithen2836 soulja boy's you is also iconic
my pc trying to boot up is my fav sound
Your version was fantastic! Wouldn’t have noticed if it were swapped! Great job!
I'll always remember all of the sounds on the source engine
Pick up that can.
I thought this was a programming tutorial, still pleasently surprised.
The enemy sounds from the first Doom games are iconic imo. I wanted to say that so are the sounds from the newer games, but honestly I think the sound design is so good all-around on them that nothing particularly stands out as iconic to me.
I get sooo excited every time I see a new video pop up !!!
What a refreshing video. I though that there are no more interesting content creators on youtube. Congrats!
Fantastic video man
Didn't know what i was getting into in the end i loved it
This is such a good video, I love this style of content. Keep it up
Unforgettable sound - The ps1/ps2 startup screens.
This was weird how close it was and how much it sounded nearly the same to me because of the wobble que
I would add the Halo CE shield recharge sound to the list of instantly recognisable sounds. *BWOOOOOOOOOO--WOOOOOOO*
Omg yessss
I love your channel! It inspires me for my sound design, you also give usefull tips
I skipped forward to the sound clip part, thinking you're were just showing the original before yours but then I realized it was actually your sound clip and I literally was like "Can you actually fool a Portal fan to this?"
Another excellent video, my dude.
I would love to hear more examples of you utilizing math in sound design
Wow, very cool. I never thought about some of these things, specially the comparison between visual art and sound design. It has expanded my mind a little to realize that audio designers DO have their own unique style, the same way a visual artist does. Kudos, compadre. .
What a friggin' genius.
I really enjoy watching your videos! You should definetly try to post more often :)
Crash Bandicoot's whirlwind attack sound. Actually there's loads of iconic sounds from crash lol
Wow, that's pretty close, well done!
It never occured to me that the wobbly "springy"( as i wrote it down ) in the original could be a graphene pen scribbling on a piece of paper until now.
Half-Life 2 is a great topic!
We do what we must, because, we can.
Damn notification bell that doesn't notificate me when your vids are out. I'm glad i came to see if you had new vids, they're great !
i fucking love you and your channel.
One thing that I find super useful in sci-fi sounds is making a layer called "air" and have it just being white noise with a highpass around 10k-20khz. Then modulate the volume, panning and whatever to match the other layers. I find that really solidifies a lot of the sounds by adding some sizzle.
But that's just what I'd do; I like sizzle. Looking at your air-conditioner-sound preferences, you seem to prefer warmer sounds, I'm the opposite. Awesome work!
Real Sound Designers use their mouth to replicate sound effects they love.
the wind layer is ridiculously accurate
This is legitimately some of the most interesting content on youtube :)
I thought the gun sounded like that moment in 7th grade when someone kicked a ball to your face.

xxalex423xx thanks for doing that for me
@@snuggys56 welcome
the desk slam from ace attorney games
It's almost like a wavy thud almost splash like sound.
bro the Half Life 1 crowbar is really memorable to me
Vibrating plate of metal
To me the 'wiggly' part of the portal gun sounded like someone scribbling a pencil on a piece of paper!
There is this thing called "the killer queen noise" and i still think that is the coolest sound ever from, you guessed it, *_j o j o_*
Got a lot of unforgettable sounds of my own, but right now I can think of is the explosion sound effect in Half Life 2 (like grenades or Helicopters falling down) It's so damn unforgettable, and somehow satisfying (I think it's the same as those in the Portal Games)
Spy uncloaking. Any heavy main will get ptsd from hearing it anywhere.
Sum Buddy Pyro shooting his flamethrower. Any spy main will get ptsd from hearing it anywherez
This guy deserves more subs
Could you make a video on the sound design of the Zero Point Energy Field Manipulator?(Gravity Gun for short)
Loved this.
Weird how none of the layers sounded extremely close to the original sound but when you put the three together they sounded far more convincing
That was super interesting!
woah thats actually awesome
Damn you deserve more subs
I think my unforgettable sound is the paintbrush sound from Roblox. I was so young when I played Roblox and for some reason, that's one of the main sounds I remember. (besides the o o f)
I keep hearing it in new media and all I think about is turning the side of my house "magenta red" or whatever those silly names were.
the one i remember is the little bloop when you randomly fell down
I thought about the scratching of a pen on a notepad.
the valve theme when you start up one of their games is pretty iconic
i LOVE this sound
