In the spring of 1983, shortly before the release of "Return of the Jedi", a picture book came out that had a photo of the second Death Star under construction. And when I first saw that image, I though that it was the wreckage of the first Death Star that had not been completely destroyed and the Empire was putting it back together again.

When the Millennium Falcon knocks off it's radar dish in ROTJ and Lando says "that was too close" I always thought he said "my tooth is loose"

This is one of the main reasons I love this channel, Junkman you keep things on the real. You won't see another channel where the host admits they thought or did stupid stuff. Also love seeing the theatrical versions of the movies!
The stories you tell about yourself as a kid are so relatable and really adds to the channel's nostalgic factor.
I remember when I first saw the second Death Star in RoTJ, I thought it looked incomplete because it was the first Death Star and that's what it looked like after it blew up. Like, I somehow thought the first Death Star only partially exploded and what we saw in RoTJ was the remains of the first Death Star after it blew up and they were repairing it. Also in the cave scene you mentioned where Luke cuts off Vader's head and sees his own face under the mask, I didn't realize that was Luke's face. I always thought that was showing how Anakin looked when he was young and he just happened to resemble Luke because they're father and son.
I confused Tatooine and Dantooine when I was little. I was five in '77.
I first saw a new hope at age 9 in 1996. I thought when Darth Vader said “you are part of the rebel alliance and a traitor” he was saying “you are part of the rebellious lions” and it was a reference to James Earl jones being Mufasa

When I was a Kid I thought Since Vader was Luke's Father I always Thought he would eventually take Luke Fishing but Return of the Jedi did not have that story

I was 6 years old when Star wars came out, and I still remember going to see it at the cinema, and I thought that the hologram of princess leia was a sunken leia,that hid in R2 to give the message, then managed to teleport back to the Death star,so no one knew she had gone missing.
I thought someone could actually do the grabbing of the plank while falling and get launched back on the skiff. I tried it at a diving board and learned the lesson about wet, slippery fingers. I was lucky I didn't bust my chin on the damn thing.
Gotta have them super sick parkour skills for that. I too, do not have those skills!
When I was a kid, I thought Lando Calrissian could fly. There was evidence to support this. A) He wore a cape. and B) His name was "Lando". In order to 'land', you have to fly, right? The funny thing is, it wasn't just me. I swear, my whole first/second grade class was under the mass delusion that Lando could fly. Yeah, we knew that he didn't fly in the movie but we assumed that he COULD fly in the movie and just chose not to.
When I was a kid and saw Darth Vader's hand get cut off in Jedi, I thought it was a "stunt robot" or something, since there were wires when Luke cuts it off.
I didn't catch on that he could have had a fully cybernetic arm. I thought that they were like "oh we don't wanna cut off a real person's hand, so we'll dress up a robot in the Darth Vader costume and then Mark can cut the robot's hand off."
Yeah, I didn't even consider the idea that Mark Hamill wasn't using an actual functional lightsaber.
When I was about 5 years old, I thought Spaceballs was a Star Wars movie and could not understand why it wasnt as funny than the rest of the films until my older cousin told me the difference.

When Han Solo meets Luke and Ben for the first time in the cantina I thought for the longest time Han asked "what's the cardinal , instead of what's the cargo.
I may have mentioned this on your previous videos. But back in the 80s when I was a kid, I thought when Luke confront the apparition of Vader in the cave, it was a robot sent by the empire.lol
37 years old.. been a fan of Star Wars as long as I can remember.. never for the life of me did I realize han put luke inside the Tauntaun until you said it just now.. always thought he put the warm guts on him. Never even realized it with the figure..
I got the original Tauntaun toy which didn't have the slit belly.
I was 11 when Star Wars was released.
- The very first thing I ever saw about SW was in a Scholastic newspaper thing at school. There was a photograph of the two stormtroopers firing at Luke and Leia on the chasm. I did not know what it was about but there was something about The Man from Atlantis written nearby so I thought it was a scene from the TV series. It even looked kind of underwater with the green light of an explosion. I remember thinking it looked dumb..
- Getting home after seeing SW for the first time. I argued with my dad that Darth Vader was a robot because of his chest box and that he called Obi-Wan his master.
- I was interested in model trains at the time, so when Obi-Wan first pulls out Luke's saber I was thinking it was an Amtrak style electric train.
- For a good while I pronounced Tatooine more like Tatoonneya untill I noticed Dantooine was spelled similarly so I figured it out thanks to The Story of Star Wars album.

When Leia started talking in her strange British accent to Grand Moff Tarkin in A New Hope I thought that that was how all people from Alderaan spoke. But nah. It was just bad acting on Carrie Fisher's part.
Funny thing is, even Carrie admitted that part.
I always saw it as her mocking Tarkin with the fake accent.

Leia, addressing Vader, says, "The Imperial Senate will not sit still for this."
If you think you had a bad time mishearing Stuff, just Imagine how it was for non English speakers and the crappy dubbed versions we got due to mishearing translators. In the early Spanish esb dubbing, han replies "me too" in the "I love you" scene at bespin.
The only dumb thing I thought about SW was after seeing a pic of Luke and Leia ready to swing off Jabbas sail barge prior to the films release.
I thought they were doing the flying trapeze in that pic and that Jabba ran some sort of freak show circus and Bib Fortuna was a sideshow freak. Dumb.
Confession time: when I was a little kid I thought that one of the rebel troopers in the opening scene of "A new Hope" was Han Solo . I guess I thought one of the rebels who gets a close up kinda resembles Harrison Ford so I just assumed that, plus the black vest meant it was Han

🤣🤣🤣 after a sucky day, I'm literally on the floor rolling and laughing!!! Awesome content and I also thought that Luke threw his lightsaber into the AT-AT when I first watched the ESB in 1980. The one thing that has always bothered me is that I have no idea what the hell Bossk says during the scene in which we first see the bounty hunters.
I bet the subtitles would say something like (reptillian gurgles...)

There were a lot of things that I misheard, especially watching old copies taped off of TV. Lucas’s dialogue is really awkward.
Something just hit me. Han doesn't need to put Luke into the Tauntaun. It's corpse could protect Luke from the elements long enough for Han to build the shelter.

When Return of the Jedi came out Elton John's song "I'm Still Standing" was on the radio a lot. I was 6, and had just become aware of movies having sound tracks that could have radio-play. I thought "I'm Still Standing" Luke Skywalker's theme song, and all the lyrics were from specific scenes in the movie.
When the stormtroopers are small talking on the Death Star, I always thought they said, "How's Cassie?" "Don't worry about it". Like they had a history with Cassie, and she was one of the stormtroopers' wife. Turns out he says "outgassing". Oh well. I think mine's more fun.
When one of them says, "It's probably another drill." I thought they said, "it's probably another girl." Referencing Leia's capture and the heightened alert may be because of another prisoner.

When I was 4, my sister convinced me that a water tower was full of jumbo size Darth Vader figures. I straight would have climbed up that thing, if given the chance. 🤣

Well, there was that episode of Muppet Babies where Kermit played as Luke Skywalker...
This is a minor one, but Vader saying "I'm on the leader" made me think Luke had somehow gotten promoted, or that he was the new squadron leader because all the other guys got killed. But Vader's really just saying "I'm going after the guy who's out in front."

I had to watch that 1st video. I had a great laugh. I thought I was the only person in the world, who thought The Storm Trooper Uniform had an "Oil compartment!" Apparently, I wasn't.

On my first viewing as a little kid I remember thinking the same thing.
It doesn't show him putting Luke in there other than the toy. For all I know it was the guts, and that wasn't toyetic. I got the same impression with the AT AT and Luke. Of course back then we didn't get the option to just look again or refer to so many different things easily. I thought Ben Kenobi gave Luke his own Lightsaber. Cause they were never lit at the same time and had the same color. Also, that Leia used a blowtorch to thaw out Han.
I used to think Vader's name was actually Dark Vather, lightsabers were lifesavers, somehow got Bib Fortuna and Boba Fett mixed up name wise, and Jawas were actually called Toops because of Luke saying "I don't know how we got past all those Troops"!
Hey, I thought some really dumb stuff. When I saw the original Star Wars at age five I thought that Vader and the Stormtroopers were all droids. I also thought that the sand people were horrifically deformed aliens, not realizing they were wearing bandages and breathing filters. In Return of the Jedi I thought the ewoks were some kind of supernatural creatures because they spoke without their mouths moving.
Oh hell yeah I tried that off a diving board.
I'm starting to realize there were a ton of dumb kids in the 70s.
From Return of the Jedi audio tape I thought Yoda said, "Your father is, doe doo duh dee".
I thought Landa when flying the Falcon said, "Coming hand old buddy, don't fail me now" referring to him pushing the cannon fire button at the right time.
I thought Vader told a joke. " Where is that shuttle going?" "July hothe?" "No...lega to me."
The tape edited a lot of conversations so many lines were left out.
"take your sister for a ride." One up the kiss from Empire. :| :P Brilliant. :P ...And WTH do I feel the same way about the lightsaber being thrown in the AT-AT? :P And the new head for Vader? ...Why not? He was dismembered here, there, and where ever before the prequels showed things. :P

I was actually really waiting for the example of the slave girl and Jabba eating a "frog" and the direct connection to it!!!! I thought the same way, too, when I was watching Jedi in germany in January '84 as a 9-year-old!!! So you are not alone, Junkman! ^^And I believed it for quite a while, because it took some time before I could rewatch it on VHS and even later on TV. Greetz

Up til two weeks ago, I thought the one flight leader before the trench run said “Luck as falls, attack positions!” Had to look it up ((after a discussion with ten year old in the truck made me re think it) to find out he says “lock S foils, attack positions!”
I thought when the stormtroopers were on Tatooine looking around the escape pod said, "Look sir, toys", when he actually said droids. I guess I tbought it was some kind of comedy relief or something.
I love when you use those classic old 1977 film clips of Star Wars in your videos. I'm assuming you're using those old ones so you have less concerns of Disney pulling your videos or something? But it doesn't matter; I really like it because not only does it look cool, with the wear & tear and old film grain, but I also always appreciate seeing clips from the original theatrical edition. Great video as always, Junkman!

My father would make 'personal copies' of movies on Betamax cassettes, and he only made copies of Hope and Empire. He never got around to copying Jedi. My little kid brain thought there are only 2 Star Wars movies, and the good guys were just f-ed at the end. Then in the 1st grade I found a Star Wars book in the school library with glossy pics from the movies and fun facts spread around, but 1/3 of the book didn't seem familiar at first. Then I realized that I had missed out on seeing Jedi. I didn't get to see how the story wrapped up until all 3 movies were show on cable TV in the early 90's.
Yeah the Dantooine and Tatooine thing always confused me until a few months ago and I’m 44. I still think Carrie Fisher just screwed up her lines somehow. Probably several more things if i sit down and watch it again. Junkman, did you notice that the color green of Lukes saber became the cool color for everything in the mid 80s after Jedi? BMX bikes, slime, candy etc.
I thought the same thing too. She had an accent inflection in a few scenes, as if she was acquiring an English accent, and I thought she over enunciated Tattooine and made it sound like Dantooine.

When I saw A New Hope there is the scene with the Jawas after they shoot R2 with a stun gun. When they run to pick him up? It sounds like one of the Jawas say "Hey Butthole! oh oh oh". Watch the scene where they run to R2 to pick him up. I thought they called R2D2 a Butthole for many years in that scene. lmao

I think it was only when I saw The Empire Strikes Back in the theater for the first time. During the battle of Hoth when I saw the AT-ST I thought it was an AT-AT that was damaged and was able to keep going with the front legs and command compartment

I always thought after the sand people attack, when they picked up C3-PO,… the way they cut the film, looked like he was cut in half. I also thought when Han was frozen in carbonite, his arms were cut off (wasn’t wearing my glasses)
This isn't what I thought, but when Empire was coming out, I couldn't see it immediately and rumor and frustration had turned me into a wreck. People wouldn't tell me anything about it. I was dying for info. One of my brother's friends had a little brother, and they had all watched it. After watching me try unsuccessfully to get details out of my brother and his friend, the six year old pipsqueak told me he could tell me what happened. He finally had my unwavering attention. I asked him if Luke had a lightsaber fight with Vader, and he said they fought twice! Oh man! What happens? He told me Vader cut Luke's hand off in one fight but in the other Luke cuts off Vader's HEAD! Whaaaat? So Luke kills Vader? Nope, he informed me. Vader survives. I went away more confused than ever. Luckily he didn't spill the beans about the Big Reveal.
It was a week until I watched it and realized the pipsqueak didn't understand the events in the tree on Dagobah didn't actually happen. LOL
I kinda thought the same about chucking the light saber into the AT-AT. Don’t recall grenades in Star Wars up until then.

I actually thought the same thing about the"turning to a frog".... but in fairness... the juxtaposition of images leads you to that., I mean why would you cut to jabba eating a frog vs to what is going on with green dancer????
between 4 minutes and 33 seconds and 4 minutes and 35 seconds if you look above Ree Yee's head while he is looking down , you will see the head of a large fuzzy alien that was in the coloring books, but we never got a figure for him or a moleman type alien that was next to him in the coloring book for Return of the Jedi, the alien in questiion has a large forehead and two fangs facing upwards from his bottom lip

I saw pics before the film.. but, I also thought the Death Star was salvaged from the Battle of Yavin. In Return of the Jedi.

My first starwars film was Empire. I saw it in the theater when I was 4. Since Luke was confronted by the Vader vision while training with Yoda, I thought there was multiple Darth Vaders like there were Storm Troopers. Many other things a four year old minds interpretation lead me to believe from that movie and everything in general.

I always thought the Stormtroopers were robots, up until I got the L-shaped figure stand with film still backgrounds. Didn't even dawn on me that the "people" were Luke and Han. I was born in 1975.
The first time I saw Empire, I thought when we see the close-up shot of Vader at the window of his star destroyer observing the tie fighters flying by that it was a giant hologram of his head being projected into space. I guess I thought that it was a way that the Empire could keep discipline in the ranks by having a huge head of Vader scrutinizing them like a giant god or something. I think I might have thought this because the ESB advance one sheet is a picture of a transparent Vader head in the middle of a starfield.
I thought the death star only blew up half way and the one from ROTJ was what was left of original after explosion in ANH
Don't feel so bad Junkman... I was 9 in 1980 and in the theaters I thought Dearth Vader's head was a just a brain connected to his body. You know what...it still looks kind of like a brain!! :)
I remember QUITE VOCIFEROUSLY believing that Obi Wan was a clone. And that the Clone Wars were where the Jedi had themselves cloned to fight this epic war. I also thought that Luke’s lightsaber was green because he had gotten stronger

I did always have to double check to make sure she was saying Dantooine -- and although I was pretty sure that's what she was saying -- I always wondered why the writers chose a name for a planet that we never get any extra info about, or visual reference for, a name that was so similar to Tatooine -- like are they in the same system or something? apparently Dantooine is some totally different planet, in some totally other system, but their names are so similar? Why?
Kind of like Sauron and Saruman in Lord of the Rings - seems like things that were put in there with the express purpose of confusing little kids.

The first time I saw Star Wars, I thought that Darth Vader was on the Blockade Runner and they were attacking the Star Destroyer. I wondered, “ why did they let his ship into their ship?” I don’t know why I thought that? Oh yeah, I was 8 years old! Funny stuff Junkman! Love your channel!

I have a whole list...Boba Fett was Hans brother, the TIE Pilots were actually Vader's friends in ANH just because he said "You're with me", Jawas were just short Tusken Raiders, and Admiral Ackbars ship somehow survived a Death Star blast because I couldn't tell the Medical Frigate and Home-1 apart. Oh and when Wicket says Eeeecha Wawa! I thought he said Eat Yo Mama!

I always Luke was trying to get his co pilot out of the snow speeder when the AT-AT was closing in….. then i thought he was trying to get his light saber… then i realized he was reaching for that cable gun that helped him climb up the AT AT and he didn’t give a SHT about his copilot
Hey junkman when I was a kid and first saw empire I was convinced that just before lukd through the grenade in the ATAT that we had a scene of imperials walking about in the hold.....

Don't worry, I also thought that Jabba was eating the lady herself. 😅 Also I believed for years that there were a bunch of red Darth Vaders in Return of the Jedi. Like the red ninjas in American Ninja... They must have been the Royal Guards obviously, but it was a huge disappointment when I could finally watch the movie on VHS and the red Darth Vaders were nowhere to be found. 😂
First time I watched it, I thought the Emperor was Princess Leia’s father and they lived on Alderran, until she stole the Death Star plans and joined the rebels. Then Tarkin and Vader brought her back, double crossed the Emperor, buy blowing him up on Alderran, so Tarkin could marry Leia and become the new Emperor. Yeah I thought the stormtroopers were robots that needed oil, too.
