How Africa Got its Name: After Roman Invader?

  • How did Africa Get Its Name?
No other continent can rival Africa in the complexity of its human past. Home to 1.2 billion people, the world’s second-largest population and 2nd largest continent after Asia, the name Africa has always been intriguing.
But have you ever stopped to wonder, as home to the first great civilizations, is it really possible to know how Africa got its name and if the name Africa is even African?
Is this the name ancestors used to refer to the motherland? And if Africa and Africans were robbed of their inherent way of life, their culture and their history thanks to slavery and colonization, what if they were also robbed of the knowledge of the motherland’s true name?
For a long time, the historical origins of the name have been in dispute. A school of thought argues that the name Africa never originated from within the people and her people were never associated with the name. The theory suggests that the name ‘Africa’ is derived from the name of a famous Roman invader named Leo Africanus whose writings were used for some 400 years as one of Europe’s principal sources of information about Africa.

As a man born and raised in Rome who went through classic studies which include ancient Greek and Roman (Latin) languages and history, I can confirm that the name Africa was NOT introduced by the Romans. Scipio was called Africanus (the African) because of his successful military campaigns in the region that already had that name, at least from Greek times. Now, there's no certainty on whether the Greeks also found that name or introduced it themselves. As for Alkebulan that may likely be the name given by the early Arab travellers who visited the Eastern coast of the continent. It is likely that the entire continent didn't had one centralized autoctonous name, but rather different names given in different regions.

The name of the Roman general who defeated Hannibal at Carthage to end the second Punic wars Publius Cornelius, his family name was Scipio, his father's name was Scipio his grandfather and great grandfather were Scipio's and he too was a Scipio until after the battle of Carthage. In other words, as the name "Africanus" does not appear anywhere in his family lineage prior to the victory at Carthage it is safe to say that as a matter of fact Publius Cornelius (Africanus) Scipio was so named after the place of his greatest victory and not the other way around

When you read my post again you will note that I stated that his family name was "Scipio" ,, We are talking about the same historical figure however he did not conquer Africa. He was given the title africanus, which means conqueror of Africa, in honor of his victory at Carthage. Which means that the romans knew Africa as "Africa" at the time. What is not clear is at what time in our story were we taught and came to believe that Africa was named after or given it's name by a European

You were close but off on the origin of the name _"Africa"_ .
The name existed as a name of a tribe of people I North Africa called the _"Afri"_ people.
The name stuck, and was then considered to be the name of the whole continent by the Romans.
The Roman whose name had _"Africanus"_ in it was actually a famous Roman general called _"Scipio"_ .
In Roman tradition, when one a general conquers a region, they get to earn the title of that region as their name.
Thus Scipio defeated Carthage in _"Africa"_ and conquered it, thus he earned the title _"Scipio Africanus"_ .

Yes the name Africa must be changed, because there is power in a name. I remember when my 7 year old daughter had asked me what the meaning of her name was. I laughed and told her that she is behaving just like the meaning of her name. The meaning of her name is queen, royalty, and she behaved just like one, without even knowing the meaning of her name. The same with my son and his name. His name means leader and the defender of the creator. From the age of 3 yrs old, he had always loved the energy of his name. So whenever anyone called him by it, his whole body and eyes would light up. and yes even when his enemies call him by his name there would be the same effect. His name is such a positive name that whenever he walks down the street or goes skate boarding there is an energy of confidence, love, honor and greatness. Where people would sometimes stop to tell him how they love his energy, his style, and the way he carries himself. So yes yes yes names are very important.
I remember hearing a story about a young man who came from a family, who didn't have love or respect towards each other. They all shared the same last name, so they ended up putting a negative energy on their last name. Just by their negative behavior towards each other and other people around them. So when this young man met his wife to be, he notice the love and respect that, her whole family had towards each other. The family was so full of love that all who came around them felt their love and had lots of good fortune in their lives💘😻. The young man after meeting his wife to be,his negative fortune changed to something good and wonderful. So he decided to change his Last name to his wife's which increased his good fortune even more. So yes, we as Africans and African decendent's need the name of our motherland to be changed back to something positive and uplifting. Since the colonizers renamed our motherland to Africa, that name has been nothing but a ball and chain or a hangman's rope around our heads. Telling the unmelinated nations that they are allowed to abuse us, we are opened for abuse wherever they see us on this Earth.. So words do carry energy or frequency, so it's important that we have a positive name that helps us to achieve greatness.

Also, Louis is a french version of a germanic name Hlodwig (Ludovicus in latin), so a barbarian serving in Roman army could have been named Ludovicus, around 3-5 century.

Qn: Is it possible that Publius Cornelius Scipio asked to be named after the land he conquered as an honour for having conquered the unconquerable?
    A: It is.
Q: Is it possible that there never really was a single name used to refer to the whole continent?
    A: It is.
Q: Is it possible that we can adopt a name for the continent?
A: It is, but a name is not an identity.

Scipio was nicknamed as such due to the fact that he campaigned in the punic wars.
This was common practice by the Romans of those days.

Perhaps you're correct in saying that, however, that isn't in question here.
What is in question is the incorrect assumption that somehow the continent was named after a Roman general.
Such assumption is a gross misrepresentation of the actual facts.

Abibiman literally means, Nation Of Black People and Abibirem also means literally the same thing. Now that is TWI Language of the Akan. There are traces with bits and pieces of this language in alomost all "African" tribes.
Therefore it would not be a bad idea to stick with either of the two. However, Alkebulan also sounds like its from the mother land. As long as the name has its bearing to the people of the land, we are good to.
I have always said the Africa is not even African so why do we still go with it?

The first written sources on the topic use the word 'Africa' only for the region around Carthago. It was regional and therefore can't be a latin expression for the warmer countries south of the mediterranean sea. The ending '-ca', as it is often the case with words from another language, can be adopted to make the word fit into Latin as a countries name. So 'Afri-' would derive from the Phoenician or an African language. Since the people of Carthago differed between people from Phoenician and African origin, it is very probable, that 'Afri-' is an african root. In Latin it was (in the form of 'Afer') also used for Libyians, while the Phoenician were called 'Puni', an example being Terentius Afer. But it must be searched for within a northern african language, once spoken near Carthago. Since 'Afer' was the latin name for the Libyan people from the region of Carthago, and 'Africa' probably was derived from it and not directly from an african language, it can be searched for instead of 'Afri-'. (Derived from Hebrew a phoenician word '*'afar' could mean 'dust', but, as I said, it probably comes from an african language.) One theory says, that it is derived from the ancestors of the 'Banu Ifran' people, the root meaning caves. And caves in the region are reported by ancient sources. Furthermore the land of the Cyclops and there caves in Homer's Ilias is located in that area. Since it was typical to name gods, descendants of gods or supernatural creatures as ancestors all around the mediterranean sea, the Cyclops could be ancient African gods transformed to fit in the greek epic cycle. Since for the greeks the principle of growing and fertility were seen in connection with gods from the underground, this would mean, the caves should perhaps better translated as home of gods. This way 'Africa' could mean 'Home of the Gods of Prosperity'. But this theory has one problem: It is to elegant and historians do not trust elegant theories. But it would be a good translation, full of hope for the African people waiting since a very long time for prosperity to come back to big parts of the continent.

Alkabulan doesn't have a good ring to it! That's my opinion. Because there are so many different tribes on the continent, it would be unimaginable to pick one name over another. After all, many different tribes may have had other names for the continent. I can see where this creates some conflict between rival tribes than solving the existing name issue. The name “Afri or Africans, ” the people living below the Mediterranean is stuck with us.

I agree with you, as an African living in the Southern part of Africa I even find it difficult to pronounce. Africa is fine the way it is, everyone can say Africa. Africans really like to concentrate on unimportant things seriously, why don't we first start respecting in each other and build our continent than worry about a name. Even with our own currencies we are struggling. If it was said that we change to one currency in Africa, and take away the damn borders, yes, than I will understand, but not changing Africa's name.

    Return to Rome Edit
Scipio was welcomed back to Rome in triumph with the agnomen of Africanus. He refused the many further honours which the people would have thrust upon him such as Consul for life and Dictator. In the year 199 BC, Scipio was elected Censor and for some years afterwards he lived quietly and took no part in politics.
In 193 BC, Scipio was one of the commissioners sent to Africa to settle a dispute between Massinissa and the Carthaginians,

Leo Africanus means "lion 'of' Africa!" Which means Africa was first!
Afrika was not named after a european who called himself leo africanus or a roman general scipio africanus! Scipio Africanus (Africanus means 'of' Africa) was born Plubius Cornelius Scipio! He took the name scipio Africanus After he defeated Hannibal Barca of Khart Haddas (Carthage) in the 2d punic war! The same happened re asia. Lucius Scipio defeated parts or a part of asia, took on the name 'asia'genus! He did Not name that landmass, he took his name from It!
Additionally, Afraka (another spelling) means the living soul/mind of the sun and is also an ancient indigenous name. Af(of)Ra(sun)Ka(soul/mind).
It is disturbing that this false information is still being spread and believed. Afrikans are not backwards, and are quite capable of naming their home land. Alkebulan is ancient and indigenous also, but it is quite unreasonable to expect a landmass as huge and diverse in people languages, etc. to have one name!
