- In this webinar presented by the Association of Educational Therapists, Dr. Kaye Ragland covers the basic tenets of Special Education law. Understanding Special Education law can help educational therapists, parents, and educators ensure appropriate services for children with special needs both in and out of the public school system. The history of education for individuals with disabilities in America will set the frame for the webinar.
In addition to the historical context, the following concepts and more will be covered:
* Individuals with Disabilities in Education Improvement Act (IDEIA)
* Response to Intervention (RtI)
* Every Child Succeeds Act (ESSA)
* Assessment
* Time lines
* Eligibility
* Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act
* Parents’ Rights and Responsibilities under the law
* How can educational therapist support parents and students in obtaining their rights under the law?
* What is the relationship of educational therapy to public education under the law?
Good information
I appreciated this video and I believe it is a useful primer for many individuals. I skimmed in and out of it because I was looking for something specific, so pardon me if Dr. Ragland actually addresses this.... To anyone listening in from outside of Dr. Ragland's state (it sounds like C.A.), there are many procedural differences, especially in timelines, how disabilities are evaluated, and even finer points regarding consent, across states. I suggest listening in here for a general idea and looking for a PDF copy of your state's special education policy. Use Control-F to search for specific terms and definitions across that policy...
Very informative, thank you!
Thank you very much for an incredibly, comprehensive and clear presentation about SPED Law. Grateful Parent, I will contact you to see if you can recommend someone like you in Westchester, New York.
Does schools have a duty to access or offer an assessment plan with out the parent initiating the assessment request ? I’ve been telling my kids school for years my son has mental health and they didn’t tell me I could ask for ERMHA. Should they have initiated ERMHA assessment with the data they have and know ?
West Warwick is pushing me there
is there a link to the handout?

Why is she stating there was no law for special education when there was no US law that required regular kids to go to school until the 1920s.
