Owen Jones meets Kate Hoey | 'The European Union cannot live with reform'

  • Kate Hoey is one of a handful of Labour MPs who campaigned to leave the European Union but it's not just on Brexit that she stands divided from most of her parliamentary colleagues. Her opinions on subjects ranging from fox hunting to grammar schools, often attract criticism from those sitting alongside her on the Labour benches. But, she says, she has no regrets about campaigning alongside Nigel Farage and George Galloway to leave the European Union, stands by her opposition to the fox hunting ban and refuses to be cajoled into condemning school selection at 11.

Owen on the other hand has remained silent on asset stripping by his own party & the demolition of working class homes. Owen is indeed part of the establishment.

      you can have a fox hunt where the scent of the fox is dragged along an intricate course in the woods ahead of time that the hounds chase and the riders follow without actually involving terrorizing a live animal.

      Richard W. Bradford I’ve been on a hunt when I was younger around 13/14 and it’s was very boring but exiting too, It was a stag tho not a fox but i struggle to find the line when as a culture we breed animals for the sole purpose of eating them, if we really cared about animal welfare we would give up a lot of clothes and food we eat

      I'm assuming you're a vegan?
      Fox hunting should obviously be illegal. But billions of animals live worse lives and die comparable deaths, to provide you pleasure. You just don't see it, or do it yourself. And foxes die horrible deaths anyway, that's nature. Most get run over by cars, or succumb to infection and die a slow death.

      Racism - healthy scepticism of those who are different and may not be a fit for the existing society. I'm racist errybody, just gonna start wearing it. Only "white" countries are held to this standard of diversity and inclusivity, and the erasure of our culture therein - why might that be?
      Go elsewhere and we will bend over to learn and be respectful of the natives, not bitch and moan for it to change and "pls include me daddy". Good example would be Japan. Nobody gets to show up there and say something is "too asian".

Not believing in animal rights because it is a "human concept", well there goes human rights, governments, nation states, democracy, socialism. Should we stop believing in these things too? Unless I mishead him, but that is what the subtitles said.

    • @rp1455

      Daniel C He meant it's applying a human concept towards animals, not that we should throw away all human concepts. I thought that was pretty obvious. Although I still don't agree with that argument on animal rights, and I do think that they are important, not simply animal welfare.

    • @danielc6560
      @danielc6560 6 років тому +2

      Okay. I haven't heard of people trying to extend human rights to animals. They obviously don't need the freedom of expression or the right to assembly. But I can't really see the difference between animal having the "right" not to be mauled to death by dogs, or the "right" for livestock to be reaered in decent conditions, and what Hoey refers to as "animal welfare". To me it just sounds like someone just trivialise the barabarity of fox hunting.

    • @ZodeakUrganomix
      @ZodeakUrganomix 6 років тому +2

      Of course they shouldn't have all the rights we do, but what about the right to exist? The right to be free from oppression and pain? Tell me why nature shouldn't have rights and people should.
      I would also be very careful about some seriously inaccurate assumptions you're making about animal behaviour; animals DO have feelings and emotions, obviously. Ever interacted with a dog? Humans have neural architecture that promotes emotion because it reinforces positive and negative experiences than in turn increase the chances of survival; the majority of vertebrates have the same neural architecture for the same evolutionary reasons. Many "higher" animals DO feel emotion (including foxes) and I don't see why legislating against arseholes that want to inflict pain on these conscious entities is childish.

    Owen, hats off to you for giving us this interview and please don't take the establishment comment as a "jibe" when you would be *far* better served by reflecting on it as advice.What I find *so* refreshing about Kate Hoey is how she can be a Labour MP but still maintain well considered and principled views irrespective of whether they align with the party. Both you and I Owen could take a leaf out of her book as too can all the people commenting here and singling out one thing she said; I too find fox hunting abhorrent yet she completely nailed my position on the EU so am I supposed to lover her or hate her? As it turns out I should try to be more like her and so should we all.

    Let's not pretend that if we remained in the EU any changes/reforms would have happened. Cameron tried making tiny changes before calling the ref and got laughed out the building, yet alone the larger reforms remainers were promising. The EU is beyond reform.
    Remember when Scotland had their referendum and the remain in the UK side promised reforms to give Scotland more powers etc? After they voted to remain in the UK the whole referendum is a distant memory and all of the promises have been forgotten about or beytrayed, because they voted to stay so it doesn't matter. That would have happened if we voted to remain in the EU.

    • @rogerbennett9641
      @rogerbennett9641 6 років тому +1

      What powers were promised to Scotland that have not or are not in the process of being devolved? Changes and reforms are continuously happening in the EU take your seat for the next fight between Macron and Germany over equal sharing of the debt for all the colonies. If we had remained in the EU the responsibilties of our B O E and parliament would become tiny after we would have been forced to have the Euro.

    • @johndonnelly7270

      Despite their irrelevance to the outcome of the referendum I am also interested to hear what powers Scotland did not get considering that the Smith Commission, unfortunately, devolved significant powers to the Scottish Parliament.
      The UK is a centuries old nation whilst the EU is a supranational intergovernmental political organisation, the two are not comparable. The trend of power dispersal within the UK is devolution outwards from central government whilst the trend within the EU is centralisation from nation states to Brussels.

    The only reason I watched this is because of Kate Hoey(Owen Jones being a bit too elitist/Blairite for my liking).Agree with Kate about most things(not fox hunting)as a Lexiteer who voted for leave initially, mostly because of the disgusting way that the EU commissioners colluded with the ECB and the IMF to exploit the situation in Greece for there own financial gain.
    Another issue I have with the EU is about the way it drives privatisation and austerity.Something I've noticed that people like Owen Jones and all the other establishment-owned commentators/MPs, refuse to ever mention or discuss. The leave campaign was deliberately engineered by the establishment to be the official voice for Brexit(rather than people on the left such as Galloway,Aaron Baastani,Paul Emberry etc.)so that none of these arguments would ever be heard. Instead, they made sure any opposition to the EU was centred around immigration,so that anyone supporting Brexit could then be easily labelled as racist and so immediately dismissed,thereby avoiding any REAL scrutiny of what the EU ACTUALLY is, and how it operates, and why people who are really on the left such as all genuine socialist Parties,Europe wide and ppl like Tony Benn,Bob Crowe,George Galloway,Authur Scargill etc, as well as many others,including those mentioned above,have always opposed the EU.
    If you look at their actual legislation,there is NOTHING socialist about the EU. It's set up entirely for the benefit of big global corporations,privateers and banks;the price for which is paid for by the exploitation of the workers and weakest in society,who suffer most from EU driven austerity policies and the EU enforced restrictions on government spending,hence massive cuts to public services Europe-wide..

    Lambeth was the second highest 'remain' constituency after Gilbralter. She is not only in favour of fox hunting but was chair of the Countryside Alliance. Grammar schools are designed for the lower middle class who cannot afford private education but don't want their kid to mix with the working class and if there were a campaign to eradicate them all, I would join it in an instant. She voted against her own party asking for an investigation into the murder of a catholic lawyer. I have never heard her speak for her borough in which she does not live but I do. I think she now sits in parliament with the party of the 17th century, the DUP.

    Owen Jones should admit that the biggest single lie in the referendum campaign was David Cameron's slogan: "campaigning to stay in a reformed European Union". What reform? Kate Hoey once worked for the (unelected) EU commission, she knows how the EU functions (as did Tony Benn) whereas Owen still refuses to believe that "The European Project" is a new empire in the making.

    • @Ackreti
      @Ackreti 6 років тому +1

      EU is in process of seeking the consensus on the reform with major players announcing their ideas. However you must realize there is a year into elections and nobody will even try to reform the EU before it takes place.

    • @rfmckean
      @rfmckean 6 років тому

      I think Jones' concept of a reformable EU is necessary due to his partisan anti Toryism. Blame must be placed on 'Cameron and the Tories' (and let's forget about 'Blair and Labour'!). When you realize that his 'reformable EU' is just magical thinking, his anti Brexit argument is fundamentally destroyed.

    • @quentinnewark2745
      @quentinnewark2745 5 років тому

      Spenner56 perfectly put, I remember during the Brexit Referendum Cameron summarised every speech with the phrase “remain within a reformed EU”... without ever spelling out either the nature of the reform nor the path to it. Personally I see this as the great Remain Campaign “lie”, equivalent to the £350m bus, because it may have induced many to vote Remain who didn’t like the EU, oh but it’s going to be reformed. Really how? Owen hasn’t given any detail either, at least I’ve never read any or watched any.

    • @quentinnewark2745
      @quentinnewark2745 5 років тому

      Ackreti reform is a process you go through to arrive at an end point. The only end point being discussed seriously in the EU currently is an EU army, greater financial integration, further enlargement (several states in the waiting room). There is no discussion or enthusiasm of let’s call it the British model for an end point, a simple trading block, no Commission!

    Wages have gone down, does he not read the papers and does he not realise why wages have been held down, austerity caused by Gordon Brown's loosening of banking regulations, the subsequent crash and bank bailouts, and unfettered immigration driving wages down for the non professional and unskilled worker who then need in work benefits to survive. This man is sick.
    Fox hunting. I don't care what happens to a fox, it's death is usually very swift, something they are now considering for our own elderly and terminally ill. Well what's the difference, except that the fox doesn't give consent. What does annoy me about fox hunting is that the huntsmen and women have little to no regard for private property. No hunting signs go ignored by many when the hounds are on the scent. It was about 5 maybe 7 years ago when the lord of the manor who had title over land had to reapply for permission to hold on the hunting rights over peoples rented land, even down to some people's back gardens. I'll never forget a photo in a national paper about the Stag at bay, standing on top of someone's garden shed while hunters were trying to get it down to chase again.

    Kate Hoey thinks it's undesirable to have unelected people dictate to the UK what it can and cannot do. She's absolutely spot on, I agree completely and I believe Owen would too. However, does she really think seceding from the EU will improve that? EU bureaucrats are definitely not the only unelected people who hold a lot of sway over public policy in a given country. Financial markets, CEOs deciding where to invest, wealthy individuals looking for ever higher returns (and ever lower taxes) around the world also fit that description. Brexit will do nothing to stem their enormous influence on policy, because Brexit is a purely political attempt at solution for a problem that is as much economic and social as it is political. Brexit will unfortunately only mean that Britain will, in all likelihood, be at the receiving end of any negotiation with powerful international interests. The disappointment and the feeling of humiliation which I expect will result from that, is potentially very frightening.

    Kate: "I campaigned for Brexit because I didn't agree with giving power to unelected individuals."
    Owen: "But money?"
    Kate: "Yes, we might be worse off economically but we'll still be able to vote for manifestos and have a government with the power to carry them out."
    Owen: "B-but...money?!"

    You were talking to her but she wasn't really listening. Not answering what you asked her. At least she's decent enough to look embarrased. I guess her competition in her constituency is very very weak. Trumpish almost she is. Not listening to the ridiculousness of her answers. Eg about foxes. You're very patient Owen. Bravo. Bring on more of them.

    Well done Owen for the political diversity that your guests bring.
    I support Kate’s views and I oppose Jacob Rees Mogg’s but I like the fact that both were incredibly polite and were very interesting to listen to.

    I definitely agree with her comment about Nigel Farage not being racist, whether you agree with someone's politics or not, you should always be honest about them. Farage has said many things with which I disagree, but he correctly pointed out that the immigration laws as they stand preferentially favour white European immigration rather than black and brown people from the Commonwealth.

    Obviously the large cities he mentions have a lot of immigrants, more of whom voted down Brexit. Immigrants don't share the same interests as native born UK people with historic roots. In many cases they selected the UK in part because it was in the EU; they benefit from all the diversity etc... stuff which preferences family reunification; they can in some cases go home if the UK goes to hell, people with deep roots have nowhere to go; people who come here may have either the temperament to internationalism, or the skills... etc... Not necessarily saying those are bad reasons, they just have different relationships to the situation around Brexit.

    Owen didn't tell us why he wants to stay in the EU, was he afraid that Kate would shoot him down in flames? - most probably! The migrants from outside the EU is also an EU matter, because Merkel opened the borders to them expecting every EU country to take thousands of people in, as stated in their EU refugees dispersal program. Poland, Hungary, Austria and a few other countries are refusing to take them and the EU wants to punish them for this. So immigration from outside of the EU is a point in respect of Brexit.

    Jones has faced no competition for his income. Many people on low wages have. Not surprising that they don't like free movement. Minimum wage in Eastern European countries is half the UK rate. On top of that the UK tops up low wages. Of course many have moved to the richer countries and are happy with the rates paid, so an endless source of cheap labour. Nice for companies and shareholders. Nigel Farage is a national hero and certainly not a racist. Without a party in parliament he managed to force a referendum that we had wanted for decades. This idea that voting leave, one of the two options on the ballot paper, shows that the voter is a racist is completely ridiculous. No remain campaigner pointed out that those who prefer not to be considered racist should vote remain. The 350 million was not a promise, it said "let's give it to the NHS". The official leave campaign was not the government campaign so they could not promise anything to anybody. Owen needs to brush up on the facts, those facts do not care about your feelings Owen.
