  • One of the most brutal executioners who was known for perfoming his bloody job poorly was Jack Ketch. He was a botching axeman who executed two people so badly he almost caused a riot. The first botched execution he performed was on William Russell, Lord Russell an unruly MP who plotted against King Charles II and his heir James the Duke of York. William Russell was an outspoken Member of Parliament, who criticized the King, however he then became involved in the Rye House Plot. This was a plan to seize the King and his successor on their way back from the Newmarket Races, but the plot was discovered.
Lord Russell was forced to defend himself in court, but his death sentence could not be prevented. Because of this he was taken to the scaffold from the Tower of London and his executioner was Jack Ketch. It was said that it took many swings of the axe to take the head off Lord Russell, and the crowd were greatly upset by what they saw. Ketch was later forced to issue an apology for his actions.
