      I just did a minor upgrade from the i5 3470 in a dell optiplex 3010 to a i7 4790 in a Dell optiplex 9020. The i5 is definitely usable but it struggles on more demanding games even when paired with a low end rx560 2gb gpu.

    i used to use the i5-3470 paired with the MSI Armor OC RX-570. It ran games very smoothly and made for a very good budget build. Surprisingly, I also have an FX-8350 build along with a Ryzen 7 2700X build.

    Great video, one thing I don't understand about people who do these reviews is rhe way they only test online fps games for the most part it's like 80% of their benchmarks and not everyone wants to play those games.

      I would like it if there were more early access steam games represented. They would probably perform phenomenally in most cases and for casual gamers that don’t need a 3090 ray tracing monster pc.

    • @SanctusBacchus
      @SanctusBacchus Рік тому

      That's because those FPS/RPG are the best games to test, they are the most demanding. Stellaris, Civ, and other games will be less intensive and in the former's case, mostly CPU-bound.

    Great job! But not a long time ago I looked up all the old prizes when I bought my pc (fx-6300 based) and I'm was very confused when even a quad core cpu with a good ipc tend to struggle but not the fx lines. Heck back in the day I could buy a fx 8300 of the price of an i3 6100. Are there any plants to compare them? Keep up the good work.

    Thumbs down for a good and informative video with some false conclusions.
    By limiting the resolution to 900p and only playing in low settings, you've created a bottleneck with the CPU!
    Because the pc is always (!) going to be maxed out when you do not limit fps or something. And since this GTX970 is chilling at 900p low, the CPU is going to run as fast as it cans, mostly on 100%.
    So all the "problems" you had with "only low graphics", stuttering, pop ins, TeamSpeak not running smoothly is all because of your CPU bottleneck.
    By upping the settings to 1080p medium or high you would maxing out the GPU (what is intended on a gaming pc) which gives the CPU room to breathe!
    This way, most of your problems (pop ins, stutter) would be gone and your actual conclusion would be different (eg not been able to use TeamSpeak properly).
    All in all a smooth experience in 1080p medium or high settings is much more enjoyable and leads to a different opinion that this stutter at 900p low.

    • @RATechYT
      @RATechYT  2 роки тому +2

      Just like stated at 1:10 of this video, the reason the resolution was limited to 900p and the settings were set to low is to avoid GPU bottlenecks. Using higher settings or resolution would make this a GPU test, not a CPU, so that is something you have to keep in mind.
      Increasing the settings or locking the frame rate to a lower value to give the CPU some breathing room can indeed help reduce these issues, but only to an extent and unfortunately *not always.* You're also forgetting that by increasing the graphics settings the performance is going to drop, in some cases it's going to drop *significantly* to the point that the game isn't going to be any more playable compared to low settings. In some areas of the game you will see an improvement, in other more intensive situations the experience will mostly stay the same or will maybe even get worse compared to low settings. For example from 2:26-2:45 when I show The Division 2 results in areas where the i5 struggles, you can see that the GPU usage doesn't exceed 60%, while the frame rate is mostly hovering between 60-70 FPS. That means, to reduce those stutters and loading issues by making the GTX 970 reach 100% utilization, we're going to need to max out the settings to the point the frame rate drops to around 35-45 FPS. Locking the frame rate to about 45-50 FPS instead would be a better idea, which is something I mention at 2:37, but once again, it's only going to reduce those issues to an extent, they won't be eliminated entirely. Same goes for BFV (3:56), Warzone (4:20), SOTR (5:08) and PUBG (5:57) - whether you play at low settings or increase them/lock the frame rate to a lower value, you're not going to have a great experience. The CPU is the main issue here, Hasso, and there's not much that can be done here to really improve things, other than upgrading to an i7 of course.
      Here's a link to a comparison I made of the FX-8350 and the i5-3470, which shows how useful extra cores or threads can be depending on the situation. I thought you'd find it interesting since I also tested some of these games using both low and high settings.
      ua-cam.com/video/qCFeWb4skhE/v-deo.html
      Keep in mind that the graphics card that was used in the linked video is an EVGA GTX 1070. Here are timestamps for the same games that were tested in this video:
      SOTR (Low and High) - 13:49
      BFV - 15:03
      Apex Legends (Low and High) 15:58
      Division 2 - 17:08
      Warzone 17:43

    I have this processor. We're nearly in 2022 and the single core performance (which of course is critical) is well over half that of the highest single core performance of all desktop processors. Only tasks which require more multitasking performance are going to be severely lacking compared to processors with many more cores that are much newer. It holds up incredibly well considering it's age. You can definitely game on it, though you're not going to have the best experience money can buy. But it will be incredibly cheap in comparison. Claiming it's falling behind really is comparing it to the very best, and that only in the most extreme situations. Just turn a couple of options down from what you run with the top of the line and it'll be back up there again. Intel basically hasn't progressed much in the last decade, and you shouldn't compare a middle of he line chip from 10 years ago with the latest and greatest, although when you do this chip incredibly still hold's it's head up.

    • @RATechYT
      @RATechYT  3 роки тому +1

      I didn't even compare it to modern processors. It just struggles in most modern games, and there's no way around it.
      If you want to see a 10 year old CPU that actually holds up incredibly well, which is also the CPU that this i5 competed with, you can watch the comparison below.

      Yes. You will notice it. Although modern games will struggle (not all of them), if you have no choice but i5 3470 go with it. I wonder if stuterring can be helped by limiting FPS to 60 or 30. It's interesting that you had problems in SOTTR. I finished that game on my ancient Phenom II X4 965 and on DX12. I had stuterring when i arrived at new places, but once everything loaded the FPS was above 30 and no graphics errors were visible.

    • @RATechYT
      @RATechYT  4 роки тому

      Yes, limiting the frame rate can help reduce the stuttering.
      I'm sure those issues in SOTR would go away after running the benchmark for a few more times, yet I'd still use DX11 since it delivers a better performance than DX12 when using low core count CPUs.

      i5 3470 CPUs are still plenty powerful even in 2022 and quite cheap provided you have an LGA1155 motherboard to go with the 3470 CPU. Even an i5 2500 are almost equivalent to the i7 2600 CPU and will work on the same LGA1155 motherboard. Once you get over 3.1 Ghz everything is pretty much the same and a good video card will make greatest amount of difference. Personally I don't think it's worth the upgrade, since the i7 870 is a 4C/8T part while the i5-3470 is a 4C/4T one, so for the most part it would probably be a downgrade. I'd definitely save up for at least the 2600K or 3770K instead.

      Thanks for take a time for answer me!, I forgot add that my actually motherboard only support (atleast the brand) 8Gb ddr3, and the max processor support its the i7-870... the motherboard of the i5 can support up to 32gb, and 2 slot pci-e maayyybe later i can upgrade the motherboard to a i7-3770 but i don't know anyway thanks i need to think about that... Using a Ryzen 5 2600 with almost every other component being the same (other than motherboard and RAM of course) results in significant performance uplift. • @RATechYT
      @RATechYT  2 роки тому +1

      I already replied to another similar comment you left on a different video of mine. The CPU is not throttling, so there's no reason for it to be underperforming. It still has a 50 degree headroom - using a better cooler won't make any difference other than lowering the temperature.

    • @jashsylde8136
      @jashsylde8136 2 роки тому

      @@RATechYT The Temp sensor of the CPU die is broken because u used the stock cooler, or perhaps u got it defective. Stock cooler will cause Temp spikes upwards of 91C during gaming. When a CPU is utilized above 80% it clearly means it wil cross the 90c mark and what u could be seeing is permanent thermal throttle.
      Fun fact the Temps on a n old i5 cross 80C during bootup using a stock cooler thereby throttling immediately to settle at 60c lock.
      Ditch the Stock cooler, CPU will loose the ability permanently if the die is overcooked for a long time.

      @RATechYT  2 роки тому +1

      @@jashsylde8136 No offense, but these are some of the strangest comments I've ever got.
      I don't just get these parts and make videos about them immediately. Before I do the testing, I make sure that these parts perform properly by checking the temperatures, clock speeds, comparing my results with others results and so on, and this i5 performs *exactly* like it should, I don't have a single doubt about that. The temperature sensor isn't broken, the maximum temperature of this thing is 70 degrees celsius while using Intel Burn Test (in a 20 degree room temperature), which is right around what other people are getting online, and the clock speed stays right where it should under full load. It simply never drops down to 1.6 GHz, which is where it tends to drop when it throttles, and there's not a single game where this i5 drops to that clock speed while playing. The results that this CPU gets in benchmarks such as Cinebench R15, Blender, Corona etc are always identical every run and match the ones online, I spend hours making dozens of runs in these programs making sure that the results are accurate, and these benchmarks tax the CPU much more than gaming. Had this CPU been throttling, the scores would get lower and lower with every run, which never happened during testing, so if it doesn't drop clock speeds in stress tests and benchmarks, it sure as hell won't be throttling even in the most intensive games out there.

    Hey, I've been using this processor for a while now and I can say there are multiple fixes to the issues shown in the video, one major one is turning down graphics settings and limiting the game to 30-45 FPS, and it works fine for me, I do have an' upgraded rig but I made a Guest Rig using a Dell Optiplex 7050 and putting in a RX 6400 and I've had many guests over who do not complain about the FPS when I have a ton of spare parts and could just build a better spare rig, I think the novelty of the Guest Rig is mainly why I haven't replaced it yet, and think it'll stay for years to come, I've even let people rent out the room for a couple weeks and let them use it as a complimentary PC and they don't mind it either as it runs the games and apps the people needed perfectly when the settings are adjusted accordingly!

    • @RATechYT
      @RATechYT  7 місяців тому

      I do mention that a frame cap will help, but it's just a band aid on the problem rather than a fix. If the game runs at 60 FPS but occasionally drops to 20, you need to limit the frame rate to 20 to not have those stutters, there's simply no way of keeping 60 FPS and completely eliminating the stuttering. This is an old quad core chip, so these results are normal.

      @@RATechYT I mean that is true, Potato Graphics Mods exist for tons of games now, and whilst I do recommend them, I don’t recommend them on games like A.o.T 2: Final Battle, as the potato mod for that game makes it so enemies only load in if they are 25M close to the player instead of the standard 50M and if they choose to prep for a grab attack, with how fast medium-high rank grapples pull you in, you cannot dodge in time.
      Also, do you know how well this chip pairs on its own when playing titles like outlast, as I cannot find any websites that allow me to just choose performance off a cpu alone and always requires a paired up GPU, and even than idk what HD Graphics the chip uses, as I may be good with tech, I never learned how to check for it.
