Rachmaninov’s last appearance as a concerto soloist was held on February 12, 1943, with this exact program. The conductor was Hans Lange and Sergei Rachmaninov was the pianist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The program has been recreated with historical recordings from contemporaries of Rachmaninov.
    The program:
    Beethoven - Leonore Overture No. 3, Op. 72 0:05
Beethoven - Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, Op. 15
    Allegro con brio 6:47
    Largo 18:30
    Rondo: Allegro scherzando 27:30
Vaughan Williams - Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis 36:57
Rachmaninov - Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, Op. 43 53:17
The recordings have been chosen carefully. Hans Rosbaud conducts both Beethoven selections, with Walter Gieseking (a friend of Rachmaninov’s) serving as the soloist in the Beethoven 1st concerto. (What a shame RCA turned down the opportunity for Rachmaninov to record it as pianist! But Gieseking does nicely.) The Vaughan Williams fantasie is performed by John Barbirolli, a conductor who has collaborated with Rachmaninov’s favorite pianists, such as Josef Hofmann and Vladimir Horowitz. Rachmaninov himself concludes the program with his own performance, with Leopold Stokowski conducting, his own Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini.
