I’m 74 yrs. old, been a classical music lover since my teens, and a Gould fan since my 20’s. I adore Beethoven. When the two are merged it’s pure magic. Surprisingly enough I have not heard this recording till today when I stumbled on it on Utube. Breathtaking!!! The cadenza in the first movement was a complete surprise to me and what a wonderful gift. I am in heaven finding this gem and am so grateful to Utube for making this possible. So lucky to be alive today❣️❣️❣️
@@CleverModerns I do have a set of cd’s by Gould playing all 5 piano concertos by Beethoven but don’t remember specifically #1. Now I have to check it out just for the cadenza. Thanks for the recommendation ❣️
@@CleverModerns Oh yes! I did find on Utube Gould’s earliest recorded footage playing Beethoven’s 1st in 1954. It did have the cadenza you mentioned. What a gift! I loved seeing his fingers playing almost the entire time. It is a shame that he quit performing live in his later years and we missed his spectacular keystrokes and pedal action. Listening to his recordings on CD is a treat but seeing him actually do it is amazing! The old footage was grainy and shows it’s age but I appreciate it far more than the “perfected” recordings he produced in later years.
....long time fan 45+ years...bought my first GG album when I was 15 y/o...the only downside to Gould was that perverse recording of Mozart sonatas in the early 70's on the fortepiano played at least 3X normal speed....

We don't get to hear the Beethoven 2nd piano concerto that often, in my life it was only the second performance I have heard. Pure poetry between Gould and Beethoven and am I alone, especially in regard to the second movement, in thinking Mozart was the dominant inspiration -- Mozart playing Beethoven? or Beethoven playing Mozart? A collaboration across centuries, courtesy of the other genius in the mix -- Glenn Gould. Thank you for giving the wonderful opportunity to hear this performance this evening of Beethoven's 2nd piano concerto.
there were no words to this man's ability - he always, inevitably, played without a score, for a start. But that amazing technique and his own precocious interpretational style - these are unique. Here in this 1958 Sweden recording his 3rd movement to this Beethoven concerto is infectiously happy and light hearted. Wonderful.
Glenn Gould in1958 with the Swedish Radio Orchestra in a superb performance of Beethoven's Second Piano Concerto. Beethoven's music seems to reveal Gould's delicacy of feeling, those latent emotions which were hidden in his often intellectual approach to musical structure.
Je suis bouleversée au plus profond de moi-même à chaque fois que j'ecoute ce Concerto. Il y a tout du génie musical et toute la sensibilité humaine avec une telle élégance. F. d' À.
Well, I did'nt know that this recording had even been done, What a truly wonderful surprise (for me). I came across this by accident, and a really very nice accident it turned out to be. It's very different from the CBS recording with Bernstein (1957 I think), and in much better sound too. In all, Thank you for 'introducing'' me to this..
Thanks so much for putting this on UA-cam. I read somewhere that this was his favorite Beethoven Piano Concerto. His interpretation imbues the music with excitement - it's so ALIVE! He must have been an electrifying performer. What I wouldn't have given to have been one of those lucky people.
Gould: Just purchased the Complete CBC Recordings on DVD of this wonderful performer and happy to report that they actually work on my computer, even though they come from the U.K.
Only on Lake Simcoe (Orillia, ONtario Canada) are fish huts still on the lake after the ice melts. My Dad drove his VW Beetle out on that lake, scared me to death.
Can anyone put into words please the technical differences between the way Gould plays say the second movement here as opposed to the way Rubenstein or Horowitz or Barenboim would play it? Thanks
Just listen to that cadenza in the first movement. Gould makes a completely modern statement while somehow retaining Beethovenian harmonies and structure. The brilliant final runs would also have been pure Beethoven showing off his technical prowess while never sacrificing the musical content. Doesn't it seem Gould is channeling Ludwig?
WHOSE CADENZZA IS THE 1ST MOVEMENT ONE ? IS IT GOULD'S ?? BRIGHT INDEED. AS THE REST OF THE PERFOMANCE, THE TEMPOS ARE PERFECT, SOMETHING THAT IN GOULD'S BACH PERFOMANCES I DON'T ALWAYS ENTIRELY AGREE, OUSTANDING PERFOMANCE OF THE SWEDISH RADIO ORCHESTRA ,THXS

50 years as a Gould fan! How fortunate you are!
If you haven't heard Gould's Beethoven Concerto #1 it has an original cadenza which I quite like! I don't know if it's on UA-cam or not.

I never care about the piano music until I found Glenn Gould five years ago, I can not stop to listen his work, he make the music has a life.
If you like his music, I recommend that you also follow Michelle Candotti, a young pianist from Italy.
Sharp, clean, the crisp notes even when liberties are taken they are done for the sake of building the best Beethoveen.
Assured, precise, expressive, rivals Maria Pires, and there is no greater praise than that

superb. Gould. I wish I could have a conversation about music with such a genius. May be in the other dimension. Greetings to everyone.

I think if I end up in a "heaven" after I die, I will still be too star struck to talk to Glenn Gould. ;)

Sublime!!! Non riuscirò mai a suonare il piano come Gould, ma a dirigere meglio di Jochum, sì.
Outstanding!

Wow! - the cadence in the 1. Mvt and this delicate Adagio. As much as I have problems with his Bach, as much I love his Beethoven.
Yes, I think his style fits Beethoven just as much as Bach.

wow. that beautiful warm tone that disappeared from his later work.
I don't agree. This was recorded just before his untimely death. ua-cam.com/video/aEkXet4WX_c/v-deo.html

Charles was referring to the 1981 recording, not this one, using it as an example in his argument.

Sorry to hear that. And strange: I don't even have commercials on my YT channel, so it's out of my reach.

not as good as the leningrad rendition
How I would love to hear the Leningrad rendition of this work. Thank you for reminding me that one exists. Regards. Robert.
