The general (darkling) was portrayed in the series (on Netflix) as more of a Magneto character. Sure he's a villain, but he has pretty good reasons for being a villain and wanting to control the country at minimum (just as Magneto does). And given what I saw in the series, he may well be correct. I think in season 3 we will see his prediction about them turning on Alina come true, and almost immediately.
