Exactly. They aren't rushing into that common trope and instead fleshing out their friendship and the deep bond they have together before moving onto a romantic theme between them.
Mal was extremely toxic friend/love interest in the books(fat shamed alina, slutshamed her, cheated on her, wanted her to give up her powers which made her healthy and happy, she came to him to talk about her trauma and he stopped her and started talking about HIS feelings, didnt even looked at her before she became sun summoner, was pissed that she was happy and safe in the little palace and much more). The worst thing is that he was always seen as a "good" guy and never apologised for any of his mistakes. Like instead of showing me that flashback I saw 20 times already they should have show us alinas training but no.... I hope that they will change it in the second season bcs a LOT of people noticed this.
Really?! One of the things I disliked about the books was that he was called the darkling. I mean was it really a plot twist when you find out the man they call the DARKLING was the BAD GUY.
And it makes no sense whatsoever, given we know all along he is the Darkling. In the show, the title makes no sense. Also, it probably means they will have to cut the real Kirigan completely, or else it would be too confusing. And that´s a shame, Kirigan in the books is hilarious.
I read the books a long time ago so my memory is fuzzy but I definitely remember the Darkling's real name and backstory being revealed way later and honestly wish they would have kept it that way because it maintains a sense of mystery that the viewers get to unravel with Alina. The show was still so, so excellent so I can't be too upset.
There are other two important differences, and they might be a spoiler if you haven't read the books so please don´t look down. 1. In the show, the viewers understand that Kaz is the leader of the Dregs while on the books he works for a man named Per Haskell; during "Crooked Kingdom" Kaz finally overthrews him and becomes the leader of the Dregs during a very iconic moment. 2. In the show it's reveal that Inej has a brother that was also sell into slavery, however, in the books she doesn't have siblings.
Yes ! I found them calling him Kaz "Boss" and never referencing Per Haskell very confusing. They don't even mention the gang, it's like Kaz is just the leader of his little crew and the owner of the Crow club, I hope it's get clearer in season 2
Kaz is said to be the leader of the crows here, I think the dregs might be written in later, as in the books he's also technically the leader of the crows, who all work under Per Haskell as part of the dregs although the crow club stake does make me think they might've replaced the dregs completely as he never owned all of it in the books
@@qrofee7578 Yes that's the feeling I got too, but I hope even if he is already the leader, we do get a real Dregs gang and not just him owning the club. As you said, even though officially Per Haskell was the boss, in truth it was already Kaz in the books so they can't take out Per Haskell without it being a big deal but I loved their interactions in the books and the scene when Kaz truly take power so I hoped they kept it.
@@SissouLoveVideo I think we will, since they've already introduced big bolliger and rotty and I'm pretty sure specht too, but I still feel like the next season might end up with him teaming with Per Haskell, perhaps to evade Dreesen and Pekka?
@@qrofee7578 Yes ! I thought so too : maybe in the show he'll have to join the gang later on, when he's already older to deal with the consequences of what happened in season 1.
the major difference in show is how they make aleksander vulnerable and he truly fell for alina in series unlike books . alina and kirigan’s chemistry is 🔥 fire . i hope netflix gives us some redemption arc for the darkling
Not entirely related by here's a list of things i hope to see for season 2: 1. More genya. I never read the books, but I've seen a lot of ppl who have read the books talk about her backstory and I'd love to know more 2. Some trauma lol. I would like to see how the death of their friends affect Alina and Mal. Alina basically sent all the cartographers to their deaths and i find it strange how it was never brought up again. 3. I'd love to see Alina interact with other Shu characters! I remember there was Botkin but he didn't really have any meaningful connection with Alina in the show 4. Alina's backstory??? I wouldn't mind if this was never further explored because sometimes i think it's an interesting choice for the main character to have a pretty basic backstory. But i also think that it's kinda interesting that her father was Ravkan and her mother was Shu. How did that happen?
@@carolinedisalvatore9768 I enjoyed the Shadow and Bone trilogy and the Six of Crows duology. However, I actually went and reread the SoC duology. I only read the S&B trilogy once

I just can’t wait for Nikolai, Wylan and the twins. Also when Kaz was saying goodbye to the Alina and the gang just made me think of that line from Crooked Kingdom...
I also loved the addition of the Heartrender-husbands (Ivan and Fedjor), which gave Ivan an interesting twist. We see him not just as this violent Darkling-supporting villain, but as loving, soft and caring boyfriend/husband.
I prefer the books because it had more Russian aspect to it. I found it more interesting for that reason. I like Alina in the books because it shows her growth even if she was not half Shu . The actress did a great job. I did like that included Six crows and I plan to read it. But it would have been nice to see a Russian character that was not the bad guy. The Russian culture was more prominent in the books. It will be interesting to see what season two holds.
I watched this before reading the book and when I realized Alina wasn’t Shu I was mind blown since that’s a pretty good part of her character in the show. I absolutely love this decision
I saw the episodes and was hooked, I spend the rest of the week reading the 3 books because I couldn't wait for Netflix. And while reading the books, considering the 1st season covers just about the 1st book of the trilogy, they did a great job. As I was reading the book and thought of the series, the way they adapted it ended up making a lot more sense. Over the years we've had hideous adaptations, but this one thrived. It was pretty much true to the source material while changing just enough details to make for a great binge [SPOILERS bellow - all 3 books & series] A big difference from the book is how Alina being half Shu makes her ostracized, contrasting a lot with how she was simply a sickly and "weak" girl in the book. I believe they changed it to ring more true to today's audiences, after this past year being so charged with racially derived violence against minorities (in the USA, but there were other incidents globally). In the end, the book makes a bit more sense since she became sick from not using her power, but to make an actress go back and forth between sickly and healthy would be very taxing on both her and the production, even with makeup and CGI. In the end, Jessie Mei Li did an amazing job, and I don't feel the need at all for that to be implemented in the series! I wonder if they will keep the white hair though... 🤔 Some people are talking about the differences in the portrayal of the Darklin. I believe Alina kissing him first makes a little more sense while making him just that little bit eviler. Alina kissing the Darkling is about her confidence, about feeling wanted and loved, whereas with Mal she felt overlooked. However, the Darkling in the series acts surprised, but as you see the series unfold, you can read his reaction as a "change of plans". In the books, you're left a bit out of the loop. You never know if he wants to control Alina, or if his belief that she's his one true equal makes him long for more. More than once, I was left questioning. He didn't have to kiss her that many times, he didn't have to share some of his knowledge, he didn't have to be surprised or appreciative of her efforts and capabilities. But he was. In the series, Kirigan's "lonely boy" facade builds around these acts of the Darkling. You see him longing for connection, but broken enough that lack of one fuels his intent rather than making him reconsider. He's just been broken one too many times to care. He still sees Alina as his one true equal, but whether they are romantically involved or not is about the same in his plans. By all means, he thought it would make things easier, so he played the game. I like that the Alina of the series is more resourceful and confident than in the books, but I hope we can still see her descent into "madness" as she struggles to find if what she wants is power, security, or happiness. 👍 EDIT: A BIG change they made right at the first episode was WHY Alina was going into the Fold. In the books, she was always meant to be going, but in the series, she burnt some maps so at least she was made to go, but her whole team ended up going with her. I think this speaks to Alina's resourcefulness while starting her (quite big) kill list. The deadly consequences of her actions really weigh on Alina throughout the books, so this scene was, for me, a nod to that. Also, this scene speaks on how adaptation means making it interesting on a new platform, and it was pure drama and hubris, a series MUST have. As for Mal, I really liked their interpretation, but he's not nearly as flirty as in the books. In the books, he's said to charm the ladies with just a smile but also said to actively seek out relationships with them (even if it's just a "tumble"). In the series, he's a puppy for Alina, but in the books, the scene in the clearing is just that more powerful because he really hadn't seen her as his object of affection before. Personally, the scene in the last book when Alina asks him if he had ever thought of her romantically in Keramezin is my favorite. Although Alina discovers she likes to make Mal blush, he's never as awkward as in that scene in all of the books 😂 I think Jessie and Archie would pull off that scene marvelously! [This isn't much of a critique, more of a personal interpretation, because the fact that Alina and Mal never kiss makes Shadow and Bone very refreshing amongst other Netflix series. I'm tired of gratuitous s*x with lack of chemistry, and in Shadow and Bone they pulled the chemistry off without a kiss. That deserves a great deal of appreciation.] Lastly, I just love how they built the world. I'm a sucker for the Romanovs and seeing the Russian historic references like that almost made me want them in the books. I hope to see more of that world-building in the rest of the series, cause that made the world just so amazing and alive. The more diverse cast doesn't affect me at all. Fedyor and Ivan's relationship is so cute, and Marie and Nadia are adorable. I hope they keep Nadia and Tamar, since they are actually cannon. Also, I feel the changes in Genya's storyline were more about closure, to make sure we had some answers if a season 2 wasn't picked up. Knowing now or later doesn't really affect Alina, the point is she feels heartbroken for Genya's betrail. PS: As a last comment, I ended up feeling that Freddy actually looked more like the Darkling than Ben Barnes (but I haven't read the Crows Duology yet). Ben is absolutely charming, but he looks a teeny bit more like a Christian Grey type of character than the Darkling 😅
Is the relationship between Mattina/Ninathias drastically different than that in the book? I would love to read more about the Crows but don't wanna get my expectation wrong

It's true. No one liked Mal in the books. Every book-reader wanted to have an intervention with Alina asking "Are you SURE you don't want Nikolai?! Hell the twins are better than Mal! We can accept the twins instead!"
Is no one going to mention that in the show Alina has Genya get rid of her scar. In the books she didn't get rid of it which I felt showed her linked to Mal in a physical way and how she couldn't just let him go so easily.
So we're not even gonna mention the biggest difference being Mal might as well have been called something else because they gave him a personality transplant in the show huh?

No matter how big a house I live in, or how many brand name clothes I have... Being left on my own, with no parents to come home to, makes me feel pretty empty...
I really like the changes they made with Mal, though I wonder how it will affect the second season. Mal's problematic behavior drives Alina to feel isolated, which becomes a very important factor in some of the choices she makes at the end the second book.
a scene I wish that made it to show was between Alina and Ivan when Ivan talks about why he supports darkling he said his older brothers died in the war and and Alina says she’s sorry and he replies everyone is sorry the king is sorry the queen is sorry and no one does anything but darkling is doing something that scene is so underrated it gives the darkling and his supporters more layers and why many of the grisha support him Obviously I don’t remember The conversation word to word but that’s how much about the conversation between them that I remembered
West Ravkan separatism is a major plot point in King of Scars, you are wrong that it's not present in the books. It's just not really in the Grisha trilogy.
Nina and Matthias are definition or perfection, in the books and in show. İ just love them, İ Hope that they will have more time in show to ne together, but for sake of the story i wouldnt change their ending (even when it hurts So bad)
I believe the interpretation is incorrect regarding the finale of Season 1, especially with regards to the amplifiers. Because it wasn't just killing the animal that granted the amplifiers power, it was also choosing not to kill it. In the books, Alina was not acting out of desperation over Mal at all. Sure she feared for his death, and worried her inability to resist The Darkling wouldn't allow her to save him. However, in addition to that fear, she was also realizing that she always had the power to resist The Darkling. Her internal communication with the amplifier around her neck opened her eyes to the reality that she had equal power over Marazova's Stag because she had granted it mercy, instead of killing it. Knowing from the power of the amplifier itself that she was one equal footing with The Darkling, she only had to own that power within herself to overcome his hold on her. The show cheapens this by making it a simple "stab the antler from his hand when he wasn't looking." That comes across as more happenstance and luck, where the book really went in depth on her personal growth in this moment from being mousey and a bit timid into a strong, confident, independent, female character that knew her power and her worth.
As much as I applaud the show for making Mal more likable (I absolutely love Archie), I still can't like Mal and his character knowing how he is in the books. It's just something about his character that still bugs the hell out of me.
Saying Mal was problematic and bitter seems a bit subjective. As a reader, I’ve always saw Mal as just a teenage boy facing all these changes; Alina becoming a grisha, losing his friends, being the outsider, etc. The fact that the book was of Alina’s pov gave us little of how Mal’s thoughts and feelings for Alina. Book Mal has received a lot of hate because people seem to turn a blind eye to the Darklings’ manipulation and only see Mal as just whiny and a “boring” love interest. Love the show coz now people finally get to “see” Mal as the Mal i’ve always thought of him to be.
I really disliked the direction they took amplifiers in. It made no sense. "there are no human amplifiers." Really? Then it made them change the testing process of just hurting a grisha so they would react by using powers they didn't know they had? That would mean any time a grisha gets hurt their powers would react. In the books human amplifiers do exist, and THEY are the ones who test grisha. Six of crows even has fjerdans use human amplifers to try to weed out grisha among them.
there's a darkling prequel story. The Demon in the Woods. In this book, the darkling (in his teenage years) was mentioned he's an amplifier. A grisha that could kill him will have his power.
What i do like of the show, is that Ivan and Fedyor have a romantic relationship. Also in the book you see that Ivan is team Darkling and Fedyor is Team Alina.
Can someone please inform me If General Zlatan is actually Nikolai. I can't help but think thats how they will introduce him in the Series. If we get a season 2.

Really?! One of the things I disliked about the books was that he was called the darkling. I mean was it really a plot twist when you find out the man they call the DARKLING was the BAD GUY.
Yeah calling him The Darkling may work on paper but saying The Darkling out loud all the time, no chile, can’t take that seriously 💀
Netflix has to put some things in the first season because they haven't confirmed season 2 yet, have they?
My favorite change was them adding the crows I’ve never read six of crows now I want to but they were the most interesting characters in the show
six of crows is my all time favorite book please read it!!
They are and they are SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING in the book. If you pick up the SoC duology, you will not regret it.
the major difference in show is how they make aleksander vulnerable and he truly fell for alina in series unlike books . alina and kirigan’s chemistry is 🔥 fire . i hope netflix gives us some redemption arc for the darkling
They could do it like the beauty and the beast i once upon a time with belle and dark one. It would be much better than mal and alina
He didn't fell for her though.... He was manipulating her and was only interested in her for her powers.
Not entirely related by here's a list of things i hope to see for season 2:
1. More genya. I never read the books, but I've seen a lot of ppl who have read the books talk about her backstory and I'd love to know more
2. Some trauma lol. I would like to see how the death of their friends affect Alina and Mal. Alina basically sent all the cartographers to their deaths and i find it strange how it was never brought up again.
3. I'd love to see Alina interact with other Shu characters! I remember there was Botkin but he didn't really have any meaningful connection with Alina in the show
4. Alina's backstory??? I wouldn't mind if this was never further explored because sometimes i think it's an interesting choice for the main character to have a pretty basic backstory. But i also think that it's kinda interesting that her father was Ravkan and her mother was Shu. How did that happen?
As to point 3 - there are Shu twins in book 2 that are integral to the plot going further...
I was amazed by how well written, produced, casted and well thought out the show was! Can’t wait for its future it looks extremely promising!
Well…I have a new book series to start.
Me too
I hope you enjoy, they are so good, but six of crows is where it’s at.
Addison R Everybody keeps on telling me that Six of Crows is better
@@carolinedisalvatore9768 I enjoyed the Shadow and Bone trilogy and the Six of Crows duology. However, I actually went and reread the SoC duology. I only read the S&B trilogy once
@@addisonr5470 Don't forget that Shadow and Bone was the first book Leigh ever wrote. I read somewhere that she would make changes to the book and series if she had the chance to write it again
I put this series in my list as soon as it was possible (because of Ben Barnes, I’m not ashamed to admit it 😋🥰), and I can’t wait to watch it. 👍
Right!?! He is SO DAMN GOOD in this one!! 😍
I couldn't agree more 😍😍 I love him so much it's hard not root for the Darkiling.
I just can’t wait for Nikolai, Wylan and the twins. Also when Kaz was saying goodbye to the Alina and the gang just made me think of that line from Crooked Kingdom...
Finally shadow and bone
Yes shadow and bone content been waiting for this 😍
Woohoo! Let us know if there's other stuff you want to see :)
Yessss, msmojo talking about Shadow and Bone
I had low expectations but this was legend. (Loved it.)
I will definitely be looking for these books. I loved the series. Looking forward to season 2.
can't wait for season 2
You and me Both.
They actually did a very good job with the similarities between the books and the show, I loved it so much!!
It was pretty much true to the source material while changing just enough details to make for a great binge [SPOILERS bellow - all 3 books & series]
A big difference from the book is how Alina being half Shu makes her ostracized, contrasting a lot with how she was simply a sickly and "weak" girl in the book. 🤔
Some people are talking about the differences in the portrayal of the Darklin.
EDIT: A BIG change they made right at the first episode was WHY Alina was going into the Fold.
Although Alina discovers she likes to make Mal blush, he's never as awkward as in that scene in all of the books 😂
I think Jessie and Archie would pull off that scene marvelously!
That deserves a great deal of appreciation.]
Lastly, I just love how they built the world.
I know it's different in the books. But I'm rooting for the Mattina/Ninathias ship till the end 😍
I think their shipname is Helnik... not sure tho thats what I saw in some other comments
Is the relationship between Mattina/Ninathias drastically different than that in the book? I would love to read more about the Crows but don't wanna get my expectation wrong
@@yougurttrashcan I think their relationship is the same in the books. Try read it so you will understand. Their story in the show was actually mentioned in the six of crows books....
@@yougurttrashcan The dialogue in certain scenes are straight up ripped off directly from the books, so they are most similar dynamic wise from show to the books compared to the other relationships. Though be prepared for pain if u wanna read the books
@@youdonote1744 You're right! Their ship name is Helnik (based on their last names Helvar and Zenik instead of their right)
Only read Six of Crows, so being surprised about the plot of Alina & Co. but already knowing the Crows was perfect to get into the series.
I just started watching this series and so far I'm addicted! It's a little hard to follow, especially since the characters whisper a lot, but it's still interesting!
Mal’s book counterpart has the personality of a synthetic plant ☺️
im so happy they got archie to play mal, he's really something unique. mal in the books uh (im sorry i really did not find him interesting but he's okay i guess)
It's true. No one liked Mal in the books. Every book-reader wanted to have an intervention with Alina asking "Are you SURE you don't want Nikolai?! Hell the twins are better than Mal! We can accept the twins instead!"
That is an insult to synthetic plants lol
It was a very good series, a few details were changed but it was really well made
As a MatthiasxNina shipper/stan/apologist, I just wish they give Matthias and Nina the ending they deserve D: PLSSSS
I love it omg the casting is spot on
I love this series
Is no one going to mention that in the show Alina has Genya get rid of her scar. In the books she didn't get rid of it which I felt showed her linked to Mal in a physical way and how she couldn't just let him go so easily.
I loved it. It's extremely complleing. you can't help but get hooked on it. Can't wait to see the next season.
I ship DARKLINA so much! The darkling needs a redemption arc which was never given in the book ever. I love that the show humanised him more
The Nina and Matthias storyline is incredibly interesting and I can’t wait to see where the story takes these characters and their relationship
I should just send this to my family so I can stop bringing up all the differences any time we talk about the show ☺️
The casting is amazing 🙏🙏
MY FAVORITE 😭❤
Loved season 1!!!
Sorry but I still think Six of Crows deserves it's own show!! It's too good to be a sub plot of another show
So we're not even gonna mention the biggest difference being Mal might as well have been called something else because they gave him a personality transplant in the show huh?
I think Mal's is still similar to the books you just get things from his perspective. Although I agree that little bits were changed.
@@AoiAme225 you mean the part of him hunting down the stag? I think Leigh added that in a letter
I prefer Show Mal but i did miss the angst wnd conflict of them fighting when he makes it to the Palace. It made his growth later more stark.
I loved the show. They did great work given the source material. I would have liked more Genya, but maybe that comes in season 2?!?
I wasn't that fond of the book, but the series adaption was amazing!
COMMON! Honorable mention... Milo!! 🤣
Would love a spin-off show with the Crows! Vintage Ocean 11 style ahaha

One of the major differences from the book they made Alina a Simp
I really enjoyed the show can't wait for season 2 🎊🤗😊😚☺️🥰🤩
Can we just agree that fivan was the best addition?
I really like the changes they made with Mal, though I wonder how it will affect the second season. Mal's problematic behavior drives Alina to feel isolated, which becomes a very important factor in some of the choices she makes at the end the second book.
a scene I wish that made it to show was between Alina and Ivan when Ivan talks about why he supports darkling he said his older brothers died in the war and and Alina says she’s sorry and he replies everyone is sorry the king is sorry the queen is sorry and no one does anything but darkling is doing something that scene is so underrated it gives the darkling and his supporters more layers and why many of the grisha support him
Obviously I don’t remember The conversation word to word but that’s how much about the conversation between them that I remembered
I LOVE IT! Was that too loud?
West Ravkan separatism is a major plot point in King of Scars, you are wrong that it's not present in the books. It's just not really in the Grisha trilogy.
Please make a video for season 2. They changed soooooo much!!!
You forgot milo though he is a part of crows :))
Milo for the win!
All hail Sankt Milo!

Haven't read the books but I am 100% sure Mal is also an amplifier based on the first time Alina shows her powers
How. Do. You. Know....
Cant be 100% when u have no proof
@@akachiubani-ebere9497 🌟🌟🌟 SPOILER ALERT🌟🌟🌟
It's true
i disagree alina and genyas friendship was one of my favorite things about the show and genyas betrayal hit harder than darkles
Nina and Matthias are definition or perfection, in the books and in show. İ just love them, İ Hope that they will have more time in show to ne together, but for sake of the story i wouldnt change their ending (even when it hurts So bad)
Can you guys do “Top Ten Differences Between the Jurassic Park Books and Movies”?
before i watched it, i didn't even know it was based off a book
Honestly Crows fav characters so happy they did what they did
Never read the books, but I really loved it!
The show cheapens this by making it a simple "stab the antler from his hand when he wasn't looking." That comes across as more happenstance and luck, where the book really went in depth on her personal growth in this moment from being mousey and a bit timid into a strong, confident, independent, female character that knew her power and her worth.
what about marie’s deathhhhh
I’m happy that she dies early because it was so gruesome in the books
Is it me or is the crows made for the show parts were simply more enjoyable
Milo should be on the list 😔
As much as I applaud the show for making Mal more likable (I absolutely love Archie), I still can't like Mal and his character knowing how he is in the books. It's just something about his character that still bugs the hell out of me.
am i the only one who didnt care about the changes esp the endgame in shadow and bone? i just really care about the crows lol I love them so much.
I love Mal. So much improvement in his character in the show and makes me ship Malina
I just hope they will change the ending for Mathias 😊
I loved the show. I am going to buy the books it seems my book collection is not complete yet without them
What i do like of the show, is that Ivan and Fedyor have a romantic relationship.
Also in the book you see that Ivan is team Darkling and Fedyor is Team Alina.
This show was AWESOME! Fucking loved it
Can someone please inform me If General Zlatan is actually Nikolai. I can't help but think thats how they will introduce him in the Series. If we get a season 2.
No he’s not as they are currently looking for an actor to play Nikolai.
no he's not...
The darkling is basically magneto for grishas

"Drawing is my passion, not a gift"
the part nina and mattthias , frejdan king do not announce to frejdan citizen about peace with grisha.
İ love the show (i love books more) but in show they screwed it with Darkling backstory. They should go with original short story demon in wood. That would be cool.
you would know a elder grisha in west ravka hiding and try to destroy general kirigan plan.
nothing about mal changed - like in the show - he still does EVERYTHING to save alina like ??
