    Hello Karen from Scotland! I really find all your videos so helpful and I am thankful I have found your page. I am currently in my third year of my honours degree in biomedical science, and I'm currently writing a research paper on recombinant protein expression in E. coli. But as this research is already known and has been accomplished in previous years, how would i adjust my intro to suit this? As I don't think I can mention what was missing in this scenario, we were simply just repeating an experiment for experience and good practise for our dissertations next year. I look forward to learning more from your videos

      I'm glad you find my videos helpful. Did your research find exactly the same results as previous workers or were there any differences? Either way, your introduction would review those studies and summarize what is known to this point.

    And how to write the most effective research paper which have the potential to be easily accepted and published.
    If you have a very beginning series let me know. Thank you.

    Hi karen, tank you for this video. Can I start writing the introduction describing what is known about the topic and then exaplaing the importance of the study? I think this structure would be benneficial for the readers in multidisciplinary subjects. Greetings from Brazil!!

    • @ScientificWritingwithKarenLMcK
      @ScientificWritingwithKarenLMcK  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, you want to provide some background to your topic in the introduction and explain why your research is important. However, I think the best way to begin is to tell the reader how they will benefit from reading your paper. Will they learn something new? Will their minds be changed about the topic? Will you resolve a controversy? This approach gets the viewer's attention early and encourages them to keep reading. See this video for details and examples: Making the Transition from Student Writing to Published Author ua-cam.com/video/ddEwdTWX6ik/v-deo.html.

    Dear Karen: thank you so much for the lecture. it was actually amazing and sweet for any upcoming writer. How do you smartly publish or research a topic that does not provide high level of search engine? this mean you cannot find lots of sources linking to the topic

    Karen, I have been a Lecturer for past 23 years in a college of Technology. I have written papers even beyond my base, but this video has made me a 'novice' with the present research that I'm in. Excellent!. May I know if I want to write part of a research work for my supervisor to review, will the method be the same as for a publication? For example if I'm working on 'Thermo-mechanical ageing of Al-Mg alloy' and I have presented my proposal, production of the alloy. If the next stage is heat treatment, will I present the report to capture (1) importance of the study 2) information required 3) research objective? again?

    • @ScientificWritingwithKarenLMcK
      @ScientificWritingwithKarenLMcK  3 роки тому

      If you are uncertain about what is expected, you might want to confer with your supervisor before proceeding.

    What the benefits of research paper writing?

    • @ScientificWritingwithKarenLMcK
      @ScientificWritingwithKarenLMcK  3 роки тому +1

      Writing a research paper (and publishing it in a peer-reviewed journal) allows scientists to share the findings of their studies with others and to contribute to the body of scientific knowledge. Writing the paper is an important step in the research process. Just producing the data is not enough. Research papers help to build an author's reputation in the scientific community, which affects grant funding, jobs, promotions, etc. The process of writing also leads to insights and ideas for future research.

    Very impressive, however, my question is from where to start first to write a scientific research paper. I mean, from literature review, methodology or introduction?

    • @ScientificWritingwithKarenLMcK
      @ScientificWritingwithKarenLMcK  4 роки тому +3

      Thanks for your question. I'd suggest to begin with the section you feel most comfortable writing. For some people, this is the methods section. For others, it is the introduction. Still others might prefer the results. For me, the choice depends on the type of study, the topic of the research, and the results. If I know the topic well and am familiar with the literature, then I'll often start with the introduction. Other times, I might begin with the results so I have a good picture of the data in my mind before tackling other sections. If you are having trouble getting started writing, the methods are often the easiest place to begin. Good luck.

    • @MuhammadYounas-ld5do

      @@ScientificWritingwithKarenLMcK thanks for detail explanation. Some practitioner state that introduction is brief discussion of all manuscript; literature, methods, discussion and results. Is this a right approach?

    • @ScientificWritingwithKarenLMcK
      @ScientificWritingwithKarenLMcK  4 роки тому +5

      Although the introduction may touch on information from other sections, it is not a recapitulation of the manuscript. The idea is to introduce the reader to your topic and convince them that there is a gap in knowledge and that your study will address it using a rigorous approach. You are essentially making the case that your study is needed. This requires a brief review of the literature, focussing on those papers most relevant to your topic, and a short description of how you will proceed (a field study, for example). You can also foreshadow points to be explored in the discussion by listing specific objectives or questions. Some people end the introduction with a brief preview (one or two sentences) of the results or their importance, e.g., "Our findings aid in understanding and predicting how hurricane sediment helps some coastal wetlands to counter sea-level rise."
      To write the introduction thus requires you to have a good grasp of what the other sections will say. For this reason, some people write the introduction last. But you can also write a draft introduction and then revise it after writing the other sections. Whatever seems easiest for you.
      What you don't want to do is repeat (or cut and paste) information given in other sections when writing the introduction.
      A good exercise is to analyze the introductions for a few papers in your target journal. How was it structured? How did they make the case for conducting their study? How long was their literature review? How did they explain their experimental approach? Did they list hypotheses, questions, or objectives? Did they preview the results?
