Forget Bruno Fernandes, or Edouard Mendy, Ian Allison is surely the best signing of 2020. Absolutely love everything he's done for this channel. Big thanks to Ian and Scott.
This was really great, but it's criminal to not have included For Once In My Life. Not only is it a great bass line, but for me personally, is one of the most difficult to mimic. So good.
When I saw the title, I was thinking “looking forward to hearing ‘I Was Made To Love Her’”, but a little shocked that my favourite Stevie Wonder bass performance not even there. Wow.
WOW, Heart felt thanks from 56 years on the Bass, at 68 you have provided my first 2 lessons and hope. On the way has always been enough, maybe there is a place in space. Sincerely Woody Woodard
Mesmerizing bass lines. It is tough to put 10 bass lines of Stevie's classics together. There some other gems like "All I do", "Master Blaster," " Higher ground," " living for the city," "Part-time lover," " I was made to lover" and "In your corner."
I think your use of pedals is incredible. You have such a great sound and your timing is so tight and funky. You really know this stuff. Thanks for doing this.
I worked at the pro audio company Solid State Logic (SSL) in the late '80s. They had a copy of the 24 track multi-track to the Stevie Wonder songs "Do I Do" and "That Girl" in their demo studio there. I'm a bass player, so I spent quite a few hours after work sitting by myself in that studio listening to the "Do I Do" bass and drum tracks mixed very prominently trying to work out the parts. Happy times.
When I first started playing bass, i considered learning the bass line to sir duke like learning stairway to heaven(6 string guitar being my first instrument). When I finally started digging into his tubes, I fell in love with playing bass.
It’s an aesthetic pleasure to watch this for the Stevie Wonder’s fan from Russia. I love this channel, love what you guys are doing. It’s not about scores or tablatures that are available everywhere, This lesson truly inspires!!! 🔥 Sending you my good vibrations!
"I Was Made to Love Her" "For Once In My Life" "Golden Lady" all songs that would've nicely fit in with this list, but I'm happy to have been exposed to some new Stevie Wonder lines that I hadn't heard before!
A great selection there. Stevie has so many wonderful bass lines. One of my favourites you didn’t mention is a track called ‘Black Man’ from songs in the key of life. Cheers
For years, I've been wanting to play those exact baselines. SBL has made it not only effortless on their part, but has shown me how to do it just as effortlessly.
You should start. The background in drums definitely helps with rhythm. And it’s also really nice to be able to play a melody like one can do on a bass
My favorite ever since I was a little kid (1975, 76) the groove of Superstition has been one of my faves! The organ (souding like a harpsichord), horns, bass...all of it.
I have most of Master Blaster, and all of the Sir Duke unison down, but I'm in the middle of The Fretboard Accelerator, (and now The Fretboard Challenge); so I'm going to have to put this one "on the back burner" -- and come back to it when I have more time... Learning all 10 of these basslines would be like taking a master class in Funk!
You did a truly awesome job. And you are a fantastic bass player and superb teacher. Also, your positive energy makes your lessons so much fun to watch and learn from. Thank you so much.
That was TOTALLY awesome. Ian your bass playing is amazing!!! You breaking down the already killer bass lines makes it that much more fascinating . You’re a fantastic teacher!!! I love watching your videos!
You could’ve made 5 videos of top 10 Stevie Bass lines and not have any overlaps. Love that this video wasn’t just the hits! Some of my favorites not mentioned are: I Was Made To Love Her For Once In My Life Master Blaster Summer Soft Part Time Lover Boogie on Reggae Woman
Hey I grew up w/ wonder. From my father. You took it .,and made some of the concoctions easier to understand man. So much for back scratching all my dads 45's just to learn. Thank you.🙋🙌😘
Great video, but tiny correction on "Do I do": at 9:32 you played Eb - Db - Eb before the drop to the Low Eb...it's actually a chromatic run from Db to Eb (Db - D - Eb) before the drop. Funny enough I just came home from a show where we did a Stevie Medley and your vid pops up later. We did many of the songs you called (Signed.., Superstition, Sir Duke, I Wish along with 4 others) so that was lots of fun.
Scott has helped me a ton ever since the Technique Challenge. Recently, your videos struck me with your remarkable execution of funky time feel (swung 16th note syncopations) and glorious legato. I can picture you on the bandstand. You really are fabulous. Thank you for your wisdom.
I've been a SBL member off and on for years, and I recently started taking lessons in person to take me to the next level and provide a different perspective. The best of both worlds! Awesome! Liked and subscribed!
Thanks for breaking down your sound creation. We might need a volume two. Even songs that use synth like "Go Home" would groove so well on electric bass.
This was awesome u inspired me to get back on bass after 10 years.Another video that would be awesome is a ZAPP and RODGER top 10 baseline...I'd commend you lol✊🏾🙏🏾
Thank you Ian, this is very appreciable. how good is Stevie! singer, composer, keyboardist but he is one of may favourite drummer, no kidding! I wonder (!) who's wrote basslines ? the player? the arranger? ...?
Ian!!!!!!! You are such a great addition to Scott's Bass Lessons! Love your style of playing! Love your teaching style! Love your positivity! Love learning how to make cool sounds on the bass! Keep it up broheim bass-man!
Nice work Ian! So many epic bass lines to choose from! One of my favorite synth lines from Stevie is "GO HOME" off of Square Circles 1985. Be nice to have Your take & break down. Thanks for sharing the inspiration & Good vibrations One & All :)!
I remember once reading an interview of Marcuse Miller, after he released Silver Rain. He said that Boogie on a Reggae Woman was a very difficult bassline and that he had to exercise hard to play it correctly (or something in this direction).
Great breakdown of some beautiful basslines and the effects that help achieve the tones! I will be going over this probably 100 more times to snag this stuff!
One other Stevie track that has a rockin bass line is “Master Blaster”. That thing grooves!!
Surprised it wasn't on here, that tune is lit
That tune taught me how to REALLY play bass. Still my favorite!
Totally agree!
I love funk and Know a lot of songs....I cannot think Of many tunes groovier than Boogie in reagae woman....
LOVE YOU STILL LOVE ALL MUSIC
I mean, who doesn’t love Stevie Wonder?? I love the bass lines in his songs just as much, but he’s a genius. ✌️😌
Wicked bass lines and playing - Stevie Wonder is superb
What about "Higher Ground"? It's got the funkiest bassline!
that's by rhcp ? ._.
@@villusive no
@@villusive Stevie originally did it in 1974 and then the Chili Peppers covered it in 1989 on the Mother's Milk record
Stevie Wonder is, among many other things, a great bassist who just happens to play keyboard.
Btw - he plays acoustic bass

11:30 a bassist mimicking a bass line from a keyboardist, what a great tribute!
Which song - Sir Duke? I thought Nathan Watts played the bass on it?
Those ghost notes on So What the Fuss were an absolute treat

Who???
“I Wish” is EASILY my favorite. One of my all time favorites too
MY FAVORITE TEACHER combined with my favorite ARTIST????..wow what a present!!!
Stevie Wonder has some of the best bass lines. "Jamming", "Sir Duke"
"I Was Made to Love Her" isn't even mentioned?? Criminal!
My thought exactly
Yes, the most interesting one ! Also "Master blaster jammin".
I was waiting for it the entire video
My very first thought as I loaded the vid. Agreed!
"I was made to love her" was in my opinion his best bassline.
This was really great, but it's criminal to not have included For Once In My Life. Not only is it a great bass line, but for me personally, is one of the most difficult to mimic. So good.
Anything James plays bass on is very difficult to mimic... any repeated runs are modified each time. He was the best.
James Jamerson baby. Thats why hes the GOAT
That entire album was a Jamerson masterpiece. Probably his best full album.
When I saw the title, I was thinking “looking forward to hearing ‘I Was Made To Love Her’”, but a little shocked that my favourite Stevie Wonder bass performance not even there. Wow.
That was the first baseline that made me sit up & appreciate the instrument‼️
Lost guitarist here, quality video and a great breakdown. Your ear for tone recreation is second to none mate.
WOW, Heart felt thanks from 56 years on the Bass, at 68 you have provided my first 2 lessons and hope. On the way has always been enough, maybe there is a place in space. Sincerely Woody Woodard

he does, at 9:30
@@toasty9670 That’s “Do I Do”
"I Was Made to Love Her"
"For Once In My Life"

all songs that would've nicely fit in with this list, but I'm happy to have been exposed to some new Stevie Wonder lines that I hadn't heard before!

Love the format on how you show and partly instruct on your favorite songs.
Hey Ian. Thanks for bringing the funk. It really made my Wednesday morning with coffee.
“…sling shot effect…” Man, Ian, that is SO WELL expressed. I will absolutely be stealing that. :)
It’s all yours!
That was awesome. I've never seen someone look so happy to play!
For years, I've been wanting to play those exact baselines. SBL has made it not only effortless on their part, but has shown me how to do it just as effortlessly.
I don't even play the bass (I am a drummer) but I love the bass. Having Stevie's songs highlighted...such a great video!!
Same here. Can't play guitar either, but I do like playing those solos on my also when it's possible.
As one of my drummer friends told me ( I'm a bassist) "we have the same heart" .... the drums and bass are best friends
