  • Interview with Quentin Crisp. He was easy as pie to book. Like many others, he was listed in the phone book. How should I get there, he asked and I told him I would go to East 2nd Street where he rented a room and get him. The response walking down the street was amazing. All this, before the plague.

    A great man and a wonderful character. People like Crisp get it. There are no rules to life in the sense that there's some pattern people have to follow. Too many people spend their time doing what they think they're supposed to do not what they want to do. It's why so many people have the infamous "mid-life crisis".

I was brought up to hate homosexuals and be unkind, I now know that is profoundly wrong and Im greatly ashamed I ever judged people on their sexuality alone. What's important is ones deeds in life and what's in your heart. Quintin Crisp was a truly courageous human being.

    I think Quentin's observations about TV are so on point. My habits are more like his, in that if I watch TV it's because I'm deliberately looking for something. But I don't like sitting in front of the TV just for the sake of it, or having it on in the background just to "have it on". I don't understand that mentality.

    Quentin Crisp Knowledge is absolutely perfect in every way possible on the aspect of life in general in human nature, which is absolutely essential for it is absolutely necessary which makes sense and makes the Interview throughout absolutely very interesting throughout. To the point genuinely honest which i have always Loved whom i have always Highly Honoured Quentin Crisp, especially for the first time that i had watched Naked Civil Servant with my Mom, Dad and my Brother back in 1975 at my tender age of 10 years. Which likewise i myself was a little bit feminine for a boy which i have always thought of it being natural, human nature long before the word gay and homosexual first entered my mind. It's why i can honestly say that i can relate with Quentin Crisp, the boys at school never ever wanted anything to do with me throughout my childhood years only the girls were my best friends throughout.

    The Americans love him because he is so quintessentially English, and his entire eccentric persona and wit is a result of that upbringing, both positive and negative. He, being English, is critical of himself and the those English qualities that make him unique, and believes himself to be American. Very disappointing, but a very common attitude amongst the self-deprecating English, giving other more boastful societies like the Americans, to knock you as you knock yourself.

      You didn't listen to him then, did you Christopher? He was never a 'wanna be' - admits he failed at everything he did. He faced the fact that he had to be just himself - not just a gay man, like you. Boring? Not interesting? Oh get real - could you instantly reply to disconnected questions without a pause, always with an intelligent, fluent, unexpected response? If so, you too would be on TV all the time, as he used to be.

    • @michaelpenyard7129
      @michaelpenyard7129 3 роки тому +2

      @@CS88754 Totally right, Richard III - in fact, I think that I would reverse Christopher's view of QC, and say that he (Christopher) comes across as a gay man who is "a tired old self-obsessed wanna-be" who has shown no evidence of understanding how he is now able to enjoy the fruits of Quentin's relentless and massive acheivements in legalising what was considered to be 'queer' and 'bent'. Nobody thought then that there was anything 'gay' about these deviates.
      I am, to be clear, totally hetero. But I was intrigued by Quentin Crisp, back in the day. I wanted to understand for myself what all the fuss was about. I had been to a British public school - a boarding school, boys only in those days. Maybe this gave me a broad view of sexuality? I booked to see Quentin's touring one-man show, when he came to Salisbury Playhouse, for a one-night stand (sorry about that, couldn't resist it, cheap gag!). I expected a diatribe on the battle faced by an openly homosexual in everyday life. But not a bit of it - Quentin never once referred to the subject; he was entrancing; he spoke without pause; never at a loss for exactly the right word; eloquent in both his love and mastery of the English language, and his unique philosophical approach to life. He spoke for Everyman, not a minority group defined by their sexual preference. I learned a lesson that evening that I have lived by ever since - be yourself.
