John Hurt was so convincing in his portrayal that I kept forgetting this wasn't Quentin Crisp!
Very Good Actor...but he's acting. I Never confused him with Quentin. Quentin LIVED IT and...It came through him.
There a few actors who truly get the chance to play the role that was meant to be. Stephen Fry as Oscar Wilde,Peter o' Toole as Lawrence of Arabia,Judy Dench as Queen Victoria..and Hurt as Quentin. They were all in the right place at the right time and we are damned lucky to bear witness to that.

John hurt did a wonderful job in the portrait of Quentain Crisp. As a straight man this man is one of my heroes. The way he helped that young artists(Patrick Angus)who died of AIDS made me cry and such a beautiful honesty about.

I found it beautiful in the face of Horror,Fear w ppl who had AIDS,how they were mis treated,un cared for,ect yet they they stood and helped each other out seeing the gov wasn't doing enough. Was so tragic but beautiful all at the same time. I loath ppl having to suffer & not enough care is given & that goes w ppl in physical pain & thanks to Gov rules there not helped,like it's there Fault some w abuse drug's,so take them away it's awful.
Yet I'd bet some goto the streets for something hoping it helps them & fetanol is back & it's been least the 80s probably before then... makes Me Angry....

His charisma, strength, and indomitable character made him so for me. Then, to have discovered how incredibly witty he was added the icing to the cake.
He was a true original.

What a gem of movie! John Hurt is one of those actors, who can say everything by hardly uttering a word.
John Hurt was sensational playing the role of a marginalised and very wise soul.
My late partner was a rock journalist, she interviewed every big band you ever heard of, and one of the very few interviewees she was profoundly impressed by was Mr Crisp.
Sorry for you loss but I have to say that is cool my uncle meet him in New York and London.

I am thrilled to have seen this story though I never knew Mr. Crisp. The truths in this film speak to EVERYONE who feels they are an OUTSIDER. Thank you for this finely acted/styled/produced film. Thank you, Sting, for writing/singing “an Englishman in New York”, which is how I came to be aware of Mr Crisp. Also, thank you to Deniss Vasiljevs who will perform his short program on ice at Skate Canada this year to “an Englishman in New York”. I hope it fires up interest all over again in the messages of Mr Crisp.
Nobody like Quentin Crisp will likely come along; an original in the truest sense of the word. Kudos to John Hurt for his portrayal!

This was a nice follow up to "The Naked Civil Servant". John Hurt really captures Mr. Crisp. People have forgotten him now - but I remember the late 1970s when he started popping up on TV. He made a very big impression on lots of people.
I don't think he was ever forgotten. I started reading Crisp when I was 15 or 16 (2002). Mainstream media is not the place to look for witty heroes as they only show us the current flavor
I think when Mr Crisp was well known, it was probably because people saw him as an outrageous, 'camp' comedy figure, a bit like a real-life version of 'Honky-Tonks' in 'The Dick Emery Show'. Whereas nowadays, those who know of Mr Crisp like him because of his profound and witty sayings about life, and his deep humility.
@@Londonfogey Not everyone back then saw Crisp as a campy, funny character. I read "The Naked Civil Servant" the year it was printed, & I admired his bravery for having lived as he chose to live, which had resulted in his being verbally assaulted countless times by strangers who were furious that a man would dress as he did & would dare to assume feminine manners. Of course he also got beat up repeatedly for his daring to dress & act the way he found most natural for himself. For a man to wear traditional clothing for women & to have feminine mannerisms in public was against the law in the US, & such men who dared to appear in public places were often beaten up & sometimes killed. In fact, this still happens, just not as frequently.
I had a close relative who was extremely feminine from early childhood, with his Christmas present at age 5 being a beautiful bride doll dressed in lavish bridal dress & veil. My sister & I, who had dolls but ordinary little girl dolls of the 1950s (before Barbie), were astounded at the big lavish bride doll because we'd never seen such a doll, but we weren't surprised Denis had received a doll for Christmas. My sister & I were much less feminine than he was in all matters, including mannerisms & choice of toys.
Denis remained very feminine all his life. He was in fact almost identical to his mother in mannerisms, & she was super-feminine.
The only problem I had with Quintin Crisp's writings, interviews, etc, was his tendency to claim that all gay men were like him in being feminine & in being intent on finding a straight man ("a real man") to love them. There are as many kinds of gay men as there are straight men, but gay men who don't conform to straight stereotypes of gay men are seldom noticed as being gay by straight society.
Same with lesbians: most do not conform to the stereotypes. There are lesbians who are very feminine, lesbians who are very masculine, but most fall into the middle grounds, just as most other women do.
I'd heard of Quintin Crisp before I read his first book, as a close friend had known him when she was attending school in London. He had often been a model for studio classes. That would've been in the '70s, about '70-74. My friend had gone on to study & to apprentice in art conservation in the national program in Italy, before returning to N.O. in the late '70s.
As others have commented, Crisp has served as a guide & hero for anyone who doesn't fit into normal society, that is, for anyone who thinks & lives outside the accepted norms. But for the LGBTQ community at the time his first book was published, he provided a very helpful guide re how to be yourself no matter how much society & the law threatened you (or worse).
Crisp certainly had a wonderful sense of humour & was very intelligent re how important it was to be yourself, however rejected by society. His works made a profound difference in the lives of millions, whatever their gender-identity or their queerness (in all senses of the term).
I think my father liked his dapper style and started regularly wearing a cravat after he retired.
I've seen a lot of movies with John Hurt and I like him very much but I'd never thought he could play such a difficult character like Quentin Crisp so wonderfully. Chapeau!

I recall hearing about Quentin Crisp in the 70s, and if the news reached me back in the rural Appalachian mountains then everyone had the opportunity had the opportunity to know about Crisp, especially if they're gay as I am. Crisp made and left a true impression that was artistic and profound for the world and not just the gay community. When straight people opened up to him and caught his drift then they realized how sensational he could be and was. He still stands as a gay icon for the ages and always will...and he also remains a strong candid voice for society.
Must have been a hard gig being gay in the Appalachians. 😬

...be yourself no matter what they say..this used to be my chant back in the 90s and I didn't even know about Quentin Crisp at all but I thought I could really relate to what Sting was singing. This makes me feel so sad especially knowing how lonely and how true the things that Quentin said and believed until the last of his breath.

Amazingly good movie. John Hurt 😔 was a great actor and he was brilliant in this movie. I am 75 years old and lived through the eras and times of AIDS. The fears, the homophobia (which still exists in 2021) and the atrocities against humanity because of being deemed freaks due to sexual choices. There is a lot of interesting 🤔 and informative historical and interesting quips in this movie 🎥. Thank you for uploading it. 🥰❤️😍😻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😊😢

There's an ironic connection between John Hurt the actor and AIDS, although he himself was a heterosexual man who was married four times. In 1986 he was the voice of a UK government advert promoting sexual health with the slogan, 'AIDS: don't die of ignorance.' The visual part of this advert was a black tombstone falling over. In this fine film Quentin Crisp dismisses AIDS as a fad ('It will go away') but in real life John Hurt's distinctive voice said the opposite.

Gosh, that was a truly wonderful movie. John Hurt really outdid himself in this one, lately i watched a lot of C.Q interviews and Hurt absolutely nailed it the persona.
Absolutely love this movie. I remember when the Naked Civil Servant was released, thoroughly enjoyed that too. 'The dust doesn't get any thicker after 4 years'. That is also true in life, in general. If things haven't improved any during that time, they probably won't get any worse. I feel his words (not just that quote) weren't just meant for the gay community but for humanity as a whole. I would have so enjoyed meeting this man, had I ever had the opportunity. Bless his soul.

I've always been a fan of Quentin Crisp ever since I saw a documentary in the early 1970's about him - that was even before Sir John Hurt's magnificent portrayal of him in ' The Naked Civil Servant.' One of his quotes that was omitted from that film was when he appeared in court ( again ) prior to the legalisation of homosexuality here in the U.K. and he was asked by the judge if it was true that he was a practising homosexual and his witty response was something along the lines of, " Who's practising, Your Honour? I happen to be very good at it! ". Apparently the judge was so amused by his response that all of the charges against Quentin were immediately dropped.
On another occasion while he was giving one of his famous stage performances in Northern Ireland during 'The Troubles' a woman in the audience asked him if it was true that he was an atheist and after he replied that it was true she then asked him the obviously stupid question of which God he didn't believe in, the Roman Catholic one or the Protestant one? I don't know what his response was to that ridiculous question but I'm sure that the rest of the audience got a good laugh out of it....and he probably did too after the show was over, didn't he?
What a wonderful actor John Hurt was! Seemed he could turn his hand to almost anything. Met him when working on 1984 (one of the best filmed novels ever made) and he was friendly and calm throughout.
If ever there was an actor portraying someone else who actually looks, carries and expresses himself as that person it is John Hurt portraying Quentin Crisp. It is remarkable. I never knew of Quentin Crisp before yesterday and came upon an interview of him, followed by another, and found him very interesting and intelligent. Somewhere in the comments section someone mentioned a movie with John Hurt playing Quentin Crisp so I went to search for it and came upon this. I couldn't believe the resemblance, mannerisms, speech et al. It was as though I was watching the real Quentin Crisp I saw in his interviews. Watching this I kept wondering if it wasn't the real Quentin Crisp playing himself. I had to double-check the vid's description to confirm it was John Hurt as Quentin Crisp. I'm just a little over halfway through watching the UA-cam vid right now but had to pause to comment. I can't believe he, John Hurt, didn't win an Oscar for this.
The acting here is amazing, John Hurt and Jonathan Tucker work so well off each other.

That Quentin loved NYC is an understatement. The gay scene didn't recognize or accept that Crisp was a flaming Queen. Queens were on the other end of the spectrum from the handkerchief in the pocket boys. Queens were drag and Crisp wasn't drag. A true Queen isn't a man dressing as a woman. That's a Drag Queen. A true "Queen" was Quentin Crisp. A flamboyant effeminate male who dressed as such. Even today in the 21st century, few gays express themselves as true Queens. Quentin Crisp didn't deny what he was.
What gets me is that at his age Quentin walked up all those flights of steps! In all the buildings shown from a distance and the camera backs up, showing the entire building, that's a five flight walk-up. 99% of the apartment buildings in The Village were walk-ups. The buildings are narrow and by the time you get to the 5th floor, you're dizzy. As a New Yorker, I've done it but not after age 50 and def not at age 67. They make it a point to show those buildings and I think that's why - at Quentins' age, over 70, it's forkin' impossible. Quentin Crisp was an extraordinary man in more ways than one 😅
Quentin Crisp made a point very early on in his life which was to give love. Not expect Love in return and overall, not to expect Love. True Love is giving. Giving with Love. Not receiving and giving Love is selfless. This is the second doc on Quentin Crisp and focuses on the latter half of Crisps' life. The first is The Naked Civil Servant and John Hurt portrays Quentin Crisp in both. Of course, extraordinarily.
It makes me happy to know that Quentin Crisps' ashes were sprinkled over NYC, as a New Yorker.
Have to give UA-cam credit for having them both.

The impersonation of Quentin Crisp by John Hurst is stunning. I have matched the whole series of Questin Crisp's shows in the U.S., as well as interviews and reports, and at moments it is nearly impossible to see the difference between the actor and the real person.
it's so well done, one of the few biopic series where the actor and real person are quite close in resemblance and mannerisms, i wish he'd won an award

Hurt. The name is simply spells brilliance in acting…disappearing into the characters he inhibits. He should have wooon an Oscan for The Elephant Man…He should have been at least nominated for 1988’s Scandal….He should have been nominated for another Oscar, Golden Globe, Cannes, Sundance for this another cinematic gem!….aside from what he already won!
I love the "Clones" monologue in the bar - print that and stick it over all of Grindr. The film showing Crisp getting "canceled" by the gay community over his remarks seems very relevant now with the current culture. John Hurt is a brilliant actor and we miss him terribly.
Exactly. Seeing that made me realize that there’s ALWAYS been clones in one fashion or another, in the gay world.
Absolutely it makes zero sense. In Southeast Asia, Thailand and Philippines etc as well as South America feminine homosexuals embrace their femininity and transition young. Where it’s socially acceptable more homosexuals will transition, in the west where “being a gay man is better” less do. Ofc there is a difference between a trans and a gay but in those cultures they view other gays like sisters and they transition and get with Hetero men. (Who are what gays really want anyway) in the west we force feminine boys to “man up” their entire lives, self police their behaviors, voice and mannerisms, and then it happens again in the grindr gay scene. “Masc for masc” so you end up with a bunch of little feminine boys who are acting out a faux masculinity. Prior to the 1970s homosexuals were highly effeminate starting with eunuchs in Rome. They went with heterosexual men, since being in a gay relationship really wasn’t an option it was all basically behind closed doors. I don’t see the point of forcing gay men to hide a part of themselves. Most gay men play with Barbies as kids then call themselves “straight acting masc for masc” as adults after years of being broken and molded into what they think people want. Very sad culture and if you are a feminine gay boy other places you embrace your femininity and get the men you actually want. Grindr culture “masc or fem” “top or btm” grates away at gay men’s sanity little by little when most of them just want an actual masculine man to treat them like a princess deep down. So you have a sea of bottoms looking for a top, and a bunch of fem guys putting on fake deep voices to TRY to pass as masc to obtain another guy TRYING to pass as masc! Makes no sense! We have it wrong, other cultures have it right.

I love this movie because I have a gay brother who is related to this movie. While watching I was thinking my brother and how long more he can live.... I felt my tears want to come out but this is the reality. We must suffer from the consequences we choice. And if still have time then make right the remaining time here in this world.

The Naked Civil Servant has long been a favourite movie. It was wonderful to see John Hurt reprise his performance as Quentin Crisp and a wonderful surprise that I only found this movie, a continuation of his story, today.
Lovely film. Thank you for posting. Makes a person think of the many people all over the world that HIV killed and continues to kill. Sweet memories of John Hurt's beautiful speaking voice and the late, great Mr Crisp.
Also that John Hurt voiced the public service announcements in the early days of AIDS in the UK
