On a very low power rifle like sub 500fps Canadian models a loose fit is actually better to prevent jams because they don't have enough power to expand anything haha But a bit of restriction sure is a good thing for the piston to build a bit of momentum and not bang into the chamber
After spending TOO many thousands of dollars on what I call 'low quality' airguns, I began saving my money and within a few months, bought a used Weihrauch HW30s from Baker Airguns in Ohio. Three years later, I bought a new HW30S from Airguns of Arizona. All but one of the junk airguns I had previously bought, I simply gave away to friends and neighbors. The one Hatsan I still have is the 95 Vortex QE in .25 caliber. When the gas ram in it dies, I'll likely get a Weihrauch HW95N in .25 cal. Cheers from Texas!
any air gun you need to check the pellet to bore fit so you know what you have working for you or against you ! Just because it says weihrauch does not mean you are fool proof I had order bran new barrels from AOA for weihrauchs and had to send them back as they had a crown issue. typical weihrauchs are medium power at best = low recoil now if you spend the money on a nice hw 95 N .25 cal would be very low feet per second and pretty much be a waste I have one a 95 N in 20cal I rebuild the gas rams you can always send it.
Dear Mike, thanks for your review. I’ll be checking my Hatsan 125 25 cal (never grouper) with this in mind. The fact and demonstration that such low quality barrels would be sent with ANY air rifle doesn’t speak well for the manufacturer or the retailers. These tools/rifles are not purchased with the expectation of them being mere toys. Sending such garbage for money speaks of a significant disrespect that these folks have for air gunners in general. The community will not likely grow until these people are held to some account. Thanks for what you do.
I'm puzzled?? here in the UK we can easily purchase the same pellets in a variety of sizes (i.e. 4.50,4.51 & 4.52) to get a good pellet fit, this not available in the USA? There is definitely a discrepancy (probably in tooling) between the older bores (Imperial system) and newer (Metric system) if I remember correctly the metric (guns manufactured in Europe) are slightly tighter? but check that.
It's not about pellet size, it's checking if the bore of the barrel is constant for it's full length. If it's not, then you will lose power and accuracy. Great video Mike 👍
@@kolsando Oh I saw what he was doing, which incidentally is right, but how do you gauge correct pellet size? i.e. what tolerances are needed at tightest spot? I suppose you could measure pushed through pellet with a micrometer and go from there? You lose power in various ways, (too tight/too slack). This is showing that, unfortunately it is missing the next stage, i.e. a solution. You push through a standard pellet at say 4.52, it sticks. Personally I would then decrease pellet size until I found one that went through with moderate pressure (i.e. 4.51). Remember, when you shoot for real the skirt expands to grip the rifling.
True that good quality pellets are available in different head sizes, old .22 air rifle bore diameters are slightly larger and I believe old pellets although lower quality and more variable were closer to 5.6mm whereas now they are typically ~5.52mm. I would not expect a barrel to allow standard size pellets to drop through as shown, plus quality airgun barrels are choked so the pellet should encounter a little extra resistance as it exits the muzzle. I don't have experience with the larger calibres but I would expect a good fit to be even more important with more powerful springers. Perhaps the breech has been inadvertently 'choked' by the manufacturing process (?) or the barrels were machined and fitted at the wrong end? It does appear to be a quality control issue.
Question wouldn't the crono readings help indicate some of those issues? And shouldn't they mic and weigh the pellets in the test and supply information about elevation, temperature and humidity at the test lab? I ran a quality control lab.
typically new air rifles will have higher feet per second because of factory oils that need to burn off , it causes faster feet per second and its not good for the piston seal but it does burn off fairly quick, so crony numbers is not a proper way to check a barrels pellet to bore fit. either is the 10 yd shot group mic ing pellets is ok but how many people will do it properly for typical air gunners best way is slowly get the pellet tru the bore while you feel what its telling you an do it at least 3 to 4 times . Now skilled individuals like your self can mic the pellets nothing wrong with that. using a thin rod with ends smoothed over will also tell you hey I have a jagged bore in a part of my bore etc.. it lets you know exactly what's going on. Elevation wise matters ! Buyers should know what their elevation is ,and also understand what it is where the company is who did any testing is located temperature and humidity are factors for sure but maybe the company has ac indoors lol
