@@YoDawgUnleashedI see your point, but I disagree to a point. A lot of people don’t like how transparent a lot of dyneema is and how it makes moonlight pretty bright and harder to sleep.
Exciting as heck! I’ve been patiently waiting for this review from you after I got a glimpse of it in one of your other videos. That fabric color is unmistakable. OMG. This is the one. I’ve been narrowing down my tent wants and I am at the point where it’s going to be one of the rainbows. 🌈 condensation management w the DW and the vent/windows at the ends are so great. It ALWAYS rains here in the east so really rain proof fabric is most important to me. The impenetrable ultra plus double wall is just everything perfectly put together. Now I will just be redirecting my gear fund for this. Thx for being such a reliable source for Tarptent reviews!!!
The Double Rainbow is one of my favorite designs for tents. With the fly on it has an almost hexagonal shape which makes it really strong against wind. I was in the Columbia Gorge on a particularly windy trip and my tent which shares a very similar design was the only one not folding in on itself. It's also incredibly easy and quick to set up. The X-Mid & a double wall Double Rainbow is effectively my dream tent library.
Had my eye on the Double Rainbow DW Devin, but after seeing this video, I think I've changed my mind. This video answered questions I had regarding the Ultra fabric and has me really excited about this tent. Subscribed, and looking forward to your future review of this tent as you get more use with it. By the way, I came upon this video from the FB Tarptent Owners page.
Very nice review, thanks a lot. One of my favourite tents I'm considering to get in 2024. I wish Tarptent would add an inner with more solid elements. It would make the tent even better for bad weather or 4-season use.
Tarptent rules man I exclusively buy their stuff. So many tents to choose from. My solo is the Sil-poly Notch. When I go with my son I bring the Rainshadow and that thing is a palace! Cheers
I love this tent. I just got one and I think this is the best tent I have . Love the material and yes its 10 ounces heavier that my Stratosphere Li but I will use Ultra on shorter 2-4 day trips. The Stratosphere Li comes out for longer trips. I just love Tarptent and I did a presentation to an Outdoor Club in Vancouver BC about these tents. I think I made a few fans and everyone was coming up asking about this company and how to order. Sheila
Thank you for the detailed video , repeated 100 times before i go ahead and buy the ultra tent😂 and i loooove it, found all what I’ve been looking for in this tent (the fabric is not transparent, double wall, semi and free standing whenever i need to , light weight and partial solid mesh to protect me from our sandy weather 💯) but still trying to figure out how to fold the mesh door thu 😅
I have the 1P version in DCF and I really like it! But it's a bit small... So, I wanted to order the 2P, but I noticed this DW model. Hum! I found it very interesting. Having a very waterproof tent and also having better ventilation and condensation management is really great! I will definitely order the DW version instead of the DCF
Have you had a chance to get your hands on the Triple Rainbow? Would love to see an in depth overview of this tent. Very intriguing as a 2 person palace and being able to split the weight. Love all your videos...thank you for all that you do for the backcountry community!
Thanks for the review. I'm curious if you (or anyone else) can answer 2 questions? First, how does this tent do for solo hikers in the 6'3" range? Second, you mentioned you can make it totally free standing with trekking poles. How does one do that? I'm looking for a new tent this season, am done with single wall tents and this is looking like a strong contender.
Pretty sure all the on screen text I shared grams and ounces side by side. I’ve been making it a point to do that. It’s really difficult to verbally say ounces and grams. Too many numbers to remember. But they get put in text. Thanks!
Been looking really hard at the Double Rainbow Li, but this is very interesting as well, I prefer the more opaqueness of Ultra vs the translucent Dyneema, but kinda want a fly first pitch option for those rainy days. Had quite a few of thise this year and didn't enjoy having a wet inner... Thanks for the great first look at an exciting tent. Will be interesting to see how it compares to the newer Zpacks Duo I hear is coming soon.
I think you’d be able to keep the fly attached to this and pitch it just fine. You’d want to keep one end loose so you can get the pole through the sleeve. But don’t see a reason why it wouldn’t work.
Wish I knew about this sooner! I bought a Nemo dragonfly 2p a couple months ago but if I had known about this, I definitely would have opted for it instead.
Heard a few months ago from Tarptent that a poly version of the single-wall version of the Rainbow is being considered. Be a nice inexpensive version that does not sag.
Thanks for this review, really helpful thorough video. I’ve got the scarp ultra and have been very impressed with the tnt ultra rigidity in high winds here in the uk fells and mountains. I’ll be interesting to see the longevity and durability of the material over time but so far so good. I managed to get a good price on a blem rainbow dw ultra and am looking forward to using this for three season use. Have you had it in high winds yet? Thanks again for the informative review. Subbed and Atb
Sorry if I missed it, but can you leave the tent body and fly attached to simplify setup, or do you need to do one first, then the other? I hope this is the year I finally treat myself to a tarptent rainbow.
Nice tent. I curious as to why Tarp tents double rainbow Li now comes with a 20D nylon floor rather than a dyneema floor? Seems as though they changed the floor? Is it to save money or was the dyneema floor not durable enough? Most of us use a tent footprint regardless but.. Thanks! Hike on!!
The nylon allows for a smaller pack size, is better for abrasion and allows them to reduce the cost for the consumer. Tarptent lowered the prices on nearly all their tents by $20-$50 last year. I prefer the nylon floor myself.
Hey @BackcountryExposure would love an updated review after a few months of use. I'm really curious to your honest thoughts about how this tent has held up in wind/snow/rain - which are the strength's & weaknesses of each after testing this in different conditions if that's something you've done. You are one of the few people on UA-cam who has this tent & even less reviews on it describing it in different conditions. Is it your new favorite!? :)
Also, I saw a review mentioning that it is super noisy- more so than Dyneema. Has this been your experience? Or is it just noisy in rain? Thanks! Sorry I'm super curious for an in depth review of this tent for different conditions as I need a new lightweight tent for fall/winter asap.
Hmmm i don’t think I misspoke on that. The nylon floor has a 2000mm rating and is 20D on the Ultra version. The DW version uses a 30D floor and has the higher hydro rating.
This new fabric - is it abrasion resistant or not? Historically, Dynema fabrics are strong, but aren't abrasion resistant. I suspect a person is going to want to be especially careful when laying out that 20D floor fabric, wanna be certain no sharp objects/stones/sticks/whatever. 20D floor fabric seems minimal. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada.
I have a Naturehike Tagar 2 which I didn't realize when I bought it seems to be a ripoff of these. When it wears out would definitely consider the real thing. Double wall and two doors would really make the tent next level.
I don't know man, so far it seems like every batch of Ultra that's been produced has needed a revision due to some kind of an issue and they are always heavier than DCF which is stronger and does the same thing. I think the real problem is that the DCF patent needs to run out so manufacturers can make a better version of it for CHEAPER. I've heard great things about UltraTNT fabric (and the tape) but I'll remain skeptical until it's proven it's worth, quality and more importantly safety in real world scenarios. It's our job as youtubers to provide our feedback after long term usage and unfortunately (Backcountry Exposure is not a problem, thankfully) many youtubers take stuff out for one night and magically know everything there is to know and then try and push their lack of testing onto others.
You’re dead on my friend. It’s going to be interesting to see how this fabric holds out long term. And if it fails and has issues, I’ll absolutely report that. This will be my main tent once it starts to warm up just a touch. I really want to put the fabric to some hard use and then come back with real, in field experience. Appreciate your input and perspective. 👊🏻
Something to keep in mind; the Ultra used here is twice as thick as the DCF used in most tents which is why the fly is approx twice as heavy as the DCF fly. Even at the same thickness Ultra is stronger in some ways than DCF.
Wow where are you living ? Looks phenomenal ! The video is well put but sounds a bit too much like a selling pitch... I'm sure this tent has cons as well. I'm glad to see a new tent fabric but there are always many challenges involved with that. I would warn people about that. DCF/poly/nylon are not perfect but we know what works and what doesn't.
What do think about the new UltraTNT Fabric?
@@YoDawgUnleashedI see your point, but I disagree to a point. A lot of people don’t like how transparent a lot of dyneema is and how it makes moonlight pretty bright and harder to sleep.

It’s quite stable in the wind. But I haven’t had it in extreme winds yet. But other rainbow models I’ve had out have handled wind really well.

Is the interior super saggy? I like mine nice & taut if you know what I mean...
I wouldn’t say super saggy, but the mesh isn’t tight.
set the short bar on the inside of the mesh not on top of the fly @@BackcountryExposure
