I believe the reason for the massive amounts of detail on it is directly tied to where it comes from: a source book for the TTRPG. I believe the idea was to essentially have it be the "end boss" of a campaign, where you have to navigate through the rooms, being careful with where you go and utilizing the exact layout to blind and cripple pieces in a specific order to prevent the crew from running after you too quickly. It's a really nice lot of detail though, and I love it when ships get this kind of love, it makes them feel more real and easier to imagine what they'd be like.

So the Star Wars version of the Tarrasque. I'm familiar with the ship from all my time playing Star Was strategy games and the mods for those games, but I never realized the threat it presented since most of those games/mods allowed you to drop ships in anywhere at any time.

Actually, the Torpedo Sphere was introduced into SW lore by WEG in their SWRPG adventure "Black Ice", where a Rebel group (the players) have to hijack a massive container ship (the "Black Ice") and steer her on a programmed route into a Torpedo Sphere bombarding a rebel aligned planet into submission. But that torpedo sphere looked like a mini DS, not like this design here. There were also no deck plans of the Torpedo Sphere provided as the adventure didn't planed for the players to board it.

It doesn't mean that. The atmospheric speed is only there because the old RPG supplements used that because the now standard MGLT for in space speed wasn't around yet.
The ISD cannot enter atmosphere in the EU continuity either.

The original printed function of the torpedo sphere in the RPG books was to overpower planetary shields prior to invasion. The idea was that planetary shields would absorb turbolaser fire and would recharge before a standard ISD could recharge its turbolaser batteries after a sustained barrage. Where the Torpedo Sphere succeeded is that it would locate the planet's shield generator and target the facility with the turbolaser batteries. Then, it would fire a barrage of torpedoes at the planet, which would overload and collapse the shield. While the shields were down, the turbolasers would open up on the generators and eliminate the facility. Now since the shield generator facility was gone, the Empire could continue the siege and invade at will.

As an Eriadu Authority main in Thrawn's Revenge, this video makes me giddy. The EA is the only faction out of all the warlords to have access to Torpedo Spheres. Pair that with an Allegiance Battlecruiser to soak up hits from enemy ships and you can pretty much challenge any fleet you come across. Even the Tartan, the best point defense ship in the mod, can't keep up with the sheer volume of heavy proton torpedoes the sphere dishes out. Even SSD aren't safe from the devastating power of a Torpedo Sphere.

yeah it is pretty much a semi practical alternative to Tarkin's follies. 1 it is relatively mass producible and low cost for something its size, 2. It leaves a devastated but still livable planet, 3. It uses proven, reliable and widely available off the shelf technology, 4. Its super weapon can be used for non military purposes, 5. Destroying this thing reliably requires either an oversized fleet or sacrificing the largest grades of capital ships. 6. You only need to escort this with gunships, corvettes and frigate level craft to protect against hostile starfighters, bombers and gunships as the mass amount of torpedoes this carry can easily wipe out any medium to large capital starship in a very short amount of time, 7. It stills deliver that fear factor whilst being practical for those high intensity engagements against peer and near peer opponents.

The torpedoes on starfighters and the big heavy torps used by capital ships are NOT in any way comparable. The torps delivered by a venator or a torpedo sphere are a couple of orders of magnitude more powerful than the ones delivered by star fighters. The star fighters can deliver them with precision and in great numbers and at such close range they are inside the outer shields, but they are not the ship smashing heavy torps of a capital ship.

We have a massive warship that fires some of the more expensive munitions in the setting at a rapid rate and, since that's not enough, we also put a literal gravity cannon on it besides. Would have more sense to be a Mass Driver of some sorts, fill up at an asteroid field, and use that as cheap ammo.

Its also a specialist weapon. Think of it as like the Javelin missile. It isn't there to knock out buildings or a technical or even heck just for day to day use. It is there for its specific job of erasing heavy armor. The sphere is the same in that regard. Sure it can fight fleets or do normal bombardment. But its job is to knock out heavily fortified worlds really rapidly. We are talking worlds likely able to hold for months or years. A fleet of ISD would realistically be needed to lock them down. So likely the sphere is a cheaper alternative just not directly.
On asteroids and mass drivers the reasoning is simple. For the former they are in Star Wars even with the cloak are weapons of disruption IE they make life hard. While mass drivers have the issue that they seem to be rarely used in general while also having more difficulty in doing a time on target barrage (the rapid hit bit).

Next Star Wars weapons have a very low failure rate as a general rule (it does happen in the canon but rare). And last chain detonations like you described is not really a thing. I would like to think this transforms, opening from the "olive" form for protection to the "angel" form as it prepares to fire. I know a transformation like this wouldn't be typical for SW, but there are plenty of (smaller) ships that rotate a significant part of their structure after they take off, and it does seem a bit warranted to not always have that amount of ammo merely protected by a single shield generator. Obviously the designers of this vessel know even the strongest shields can be defeated. Plus it would be cool to see the six arms "bursting" through the thick outer armor as they extend outward, bringing the full compliment of tubes to be available for near-simultaneous firing.

It would be a lot higher as fighters fire a different scale torpedo. Actually the book you are referencing would note the scales as capital then star fighter then walker then speeder then person. Damage from one to the next was normally 10x more with accuracy being reduced when a higher scale was shooting at a lower scale. So the amount of damage this could produce had no equal outside of a Death Star..

Torpedo Spheres exist so that Star Wars D6 tabtetop RPG players could, "blow up the Death Star," without causing a lore problem. These are substitute targets, six of them if I recall, that your rebel players can score a huge blow to the Empire by destroying one, but let the movie character of Luke, Han, Chewie, and Wedge (and unnamed Y-wing pilot) get the credit for the actual first Death Star.
Personally, I do not like the art of the version that is a hollow sphere with three rings around it. I prefer the basic egg shaped one because it is a mini-Death Star substitute.

Death Star was a siege ship and a diplomatic ship rolled into one. It's a shame it did not lean into it more by being named something like "Treatymaker" or sth.

Going to guess that Torpedoes also had a long enough range to sit the sphere out of range of planetary ion cannons. Because id imagine any planet with a strong shield also had a bunch of those ion cannons from Empire Strikes Back.
On that note wouldnt planets have massive STO defense batteries that could out range any orbital weapon and just smoke a fleet in orbit? Firing macross missile massacres of torpedoes as well out through the shields with impunity.

I used oe of thse in a TTRG game campaign to terrify the party and force them to find a way to deal with it other than jumping in their x-wings. all that detail made it possible to play mu;ltiple sessions with the group infiltrating and sabotaging the ship.

I doubt the Torpedo Sphere has so view torpedoes per tube as a star fighter, as it is not limited to the same degree.
After all, it´s at the size of a capital ship, a very large one, in fact.
So i would expect it to carry AT MINIMUM 20 torpedoes per launcher, possibly even more in case of extended missions.
But that´s just me as i would think when designing one myself.
