Mammoth Elephant Ears (Colocasia Macrorrhiza) - Growing and Winterizing (Part 1 of 2)

  • On this Part 1 video, we are growing this Giant Taro, harvesting and wintering the bulbs during 2020 season.
    Part 2 video will document the bulbs during the dormant winter, planting them in Spring, documenting the growth during the 2021 season, and harvesting and winterizing the bulbs again for the upcoming Winter.

    This is the best video I've seen on growing and over wintering of these amazing plants. I live in Canada so would have to dig them up in the fall also. I'm very new to gardening and I just live the giant leaves of these plants!

    Down in my area they grow along the sides of ditches, creeks and a lot of the elderly people’s homes. People will gabs a shoot or two and plant it in their yards and a few years later they are all over. I appreciate you showing how many bulbs came from the mother. Very informative 🌱

      Thanks! Good luck with your elephant ears. I am working on editing part 2 of this video now. We have a lot of bulbs now from these two bulbs. It’s good that we don’t have to buy bulbs every year.

      @@LoveNLight1111 it's growing pretty wild!!! Four main shoots with two leaves each. More growth developing. It's pretty tropical here, keeping soil moist and sticky. They seem to really love that and a little shade. How are yours coming along?

      @@bassphantom4613 I saw these bulbs at Walmart and was on the fence to buy them bc I wasn’t sure how long they would take. I instead bought grown ones from Lowe’s. Will try the bulbs next

    Put 10-10-10 fertilizer on them. They will become MASSIVE! I apply about a cup to our elephant ear bed each month during the growing season.

    These are Colocasia not Alocasia. Leaf points down versus up. I enjoyed your video, thanks for making it.

      Thank you! I just did a little more research and I believe you are correct especially also that this variety also grows in standing water unlike the Alocasia. And I do use this plant as a big plant to help filter my pond. I will change the title.

      Thanks for watching. I didn’t use any fertilizers. I use my pond water to water them so the water is full of nutrients from the fish waste

    I planted 3 bulbs about 3 weeks ago. One is growing but the other two seem to still be dormant. How can I wake those up?

      It can take up to 8 weeks

      Mine took little over a month to peek out of the surface, they grow roots for a while underground before you can visually see any growth.

    I have mine growing in my Koi Pond. Do I put them in the garage in the winter?

      I’m not an expert on these plants but I don’t think they will survive cold temperature 50 degrees or lower. I live in Chicago, so our winters are harsh at times with below zero some days.

      @@kimuseni, I live in Southern California and it is a little chilly. My Elephant Ears are starting to curl up. But they haven't turned yellow yet. I use them in my Koi Pond. I can't believe how huge they got. I guess that is why they're called Elephant Ears, Lol! When they start to show signs of stress I will clean them as you demonstrate in your video.       Diana Blanke Merry Christmas to you and your family also Diana. Make sure the bulbs are dry before winterizing them in a dark and cooler place like the garage otherwise they will rot. I learned that the hard way. Stay safe!

      Oh wow! I would dig it up and see the condition of the bulb making sure it’s still solid and not didn’t rot.
