    Love the video and your beautiful garden and your screen porch too!
    I've been growing Elephant Ears for several years now and they work quite well planted right into the ground too.
    Of course, you still have to dig them up in the fall.
    I overwinter my bulbs in sawdust in a big, galvanized tub (a box will also work) in the garage for the winter.
    I put a piece of old paneling (or plywood) on top of the tub and use that 'table' to set more plants on.
    Thanks for sharing your garden and info.

      @@TheThriftedPlanter On another video recently I saw a man (Delaware?) who mulched a huge one after cutting it back, with 2 bales of hay and a tarp. When he opened up in the spring the plant had made it through the winter just fine.

    I loved your video, I purchased my elephant about 5 years ago. I was walking through a nursery just looking. I came to a Group of potted elephant ears, they were beautiful. I took it home, repotted it into a larger pot. I didn't know much abt them, we just kept reporting as the plant got larger. Omg, the ears became so large I could of wrapped one around my whole body. In the winter we would move it into the greenhouse. I knew it thrived on water so I continued to water it. I didn't know I needed to allow it to become dormant. The base of it is now approximately one foot wide. I have some questions I will ask later, we are going to my daughter's for dinner so I have to go for now. I just happened to see your video, I just had to watch it real quick. Your plants are gorgeous. Thank you for sharing it.
    Blessings, Tammy

      OMG!!!! That's amazing!!! You do not have to let it go dormant if you don't want to. You can keep it going like a houseplant. They usually slow down growth over winter on their own. I let mine go dormant so that I don't have to take care of them over winter. I would love to have one get big enough to wrap myself up in it. Thank you for sharing this with me I love it!

    How often you use fish fertilizer? Also what dirt mixture you use for your large elephant ear in front of the hibiscus?

      I use the fish fertilizer every 1-2 weeks and I use a basic potting mix for the elephant ears. My favorite soil is by Promix

    Elephant Ear 'Colocasia', 9-11" and Elephant Ear 'Alocasia Upright', 9-11".. all bulbs. How many bulbs can I put in one 10-12 inch pot. I dont want too many pots since I will be do container in my patio.

    Based on this video i tried to grow mine in direct morning sun (3 hrs) but it didn’t work despite me watering 2 times a day and fertilizing. First beautiful leaf burned. The second leaf was coming so i had to quickly move it to shade 😑
    Its been 3 weeks and i now have 2 leaves. Its my first time so I am excited and have plans for several next year. I am in zone 6B.

    Hi Ciearra! Awesome video! I'm a beginner when it comes to plants, and absolutely love the change these Colocasia plants present on a daily basis! I have an Elephant Ear plant I bought from a nursery in July 2021, looked exactly like the ones you present earlier in the video, but winter arrived and I brought it in and now the leaves seem stunted (small) and some don't open fully for weeks! What am I doing wrong? I appreciate any feedback! Thanks! :)

    • @TheThriftedPlanter
      @TheThriftedPlanter 2 роки тому +2

      Hello! Thank you for reaching out. You are doing nothing wrong. It's not unusual for plants that have spent the spring and summer outdoors to slow down when they come inside. Make sure they are getting bright light, are kept warm with temps above 46 and watered when the soil is mostly dry. I have two Elephant ears I brought in this winter and they are growing very slowly and when they do put out new leaves they are small. Once late spring comes they will pick back up and yours will too! I hope that helps!

      I try to prevent spider mites by spraying the leaves everyday. When I notice a heavy infestation I will spray with a neem spray an wipe the leaves. With a plant this size and prone to spider mites it more about managing them. I won't be able to fully get rid of them.
