When I was a kid, a baby squirrel fell out of a tall tree in our yard. It's mother never took it back. So my family nurtured it. She would climb up me and sit on my shoulder to eat. My adult neighbor, by contrast, out of fear wouldn't even go outside if he saw ANY animal in his yard. The next year, when our squirrel had babies, she brought them to me almost daily for food and companionship. Animals seem to instinctively know who to trust.

When I was young I had a backyard squirrel named Peanuthead. I would put out peanuts onto the patio for him everyday. One day I ran out of peanuts and Peanuthead got so frustrated he chewed a hole through the patio screen door and made his way into the house. I was in the kitchen when it happened. I heard a yell from my dad who was in the living room. He was taking a nap on the couch when he was suddenly awakened by Peanuthead as he ran across him in a panicked frenzy desperately searching for a way out of the unfamiliar environment... What a good memory that was. I don't think I ever laughed so hard in my life :-0

@@user-vn7ce5ig1z I’ve been renting for most of my life and I’ve never lived anywhere that it was allowed or not frowned upon. Honestly they don’t cause any problems here because we have a big courtyard out front and the residents pretty much keep the sidewalk swept and cleaned of any debris left by peanuts and what not. It’s the smokers area as well so I don’t really go out there except to drop off the food because I can’t be around smoke.
I currently live in subsidized housing for the first time in my life although this is a very clean and nice building and our landlord is great. He’s actually nicer than any landlord I’ve had an any other building that was just a regular apartment building. I do feel God put me here for a reason when I was going through this hard time in my life because he knew how much it meant to me to feed the animals and that I have been treated badly by landlords in the past unfairly. Anyhow I think they let us do it because a lot of us here we have so little else in life that it can really make a difference that you have that one thing, you know? I guess it’s hard to understand unless you ever reach that point in your life and I would not wish they on anybody! God bless!

Squirrels always stash food for the Winter. Those who do hibernate often do not sleep right through the coldest times, as they find it difficult to effectively insulate themselves with enough body fat and often need to top up their metabolism and their fat. I saw a squirrel out foraging in mid-December, when it really should have been either asleep or visiting one of its stashes, so I decided to start bulk purchases of raw peanuts and feed what I have now learned is a small colony of squirrels. My work is far from done...

I started feeding the squirrels who live near me right after the pandemic hit. It's funny, but I hadn't really noticed them before. At first I gave them walnuts and they loved them. Then I started feeding them almonds too and they loved those even more to the point that they would ignore the walnuts. Then I gave them hazelnuts and they went absolutely nuts (pun intended) over them. Now they turn their noses up at the walnuts or almonds because they know I have their favorite...hazelnuts. I could watch them eat and bury their nuts all day long. They know my voice and now literally come running whenever I call them. I feel privileged that these adorable, smart & wild creatures let me get so very close to them. They may be getting a meal but I have gotten much more from them.

What a blessing. I feed about 20 squirrels around my yard. I usually buy 30lbs of mixed nuts in the shell once a month and MAKE it last. It took me hours upon hours for 6-9 months just to get ONE to eat from my hand. Exhausting but rewarding. 😍

You see now that after viewing this , it's more fun to have squirrels as actual pets that never leave.
For once you get attached to seeing them, and then some days they don't come around , you worry about them in whether or not they are ever going to come back or that you will never see them again. That's too emotionally tough.

I never signed up for this game, but kept losing so...yeah. Anyway, that time has come around again, and I am DEFINITELY not losing this season. I'm thinking the almonds could be a good distraction.

I refused a and raised a baby squirrel to adulthood and trained it to be ready for the wild. But he was such a treasure. Squirrels really do get a bad rep. They're very messy but surprisingly not destructive. But will take advantage of any holes in your home. They don't cause them, they just expose that you have them.
