BEAGLE Tapes: Episode 48 - Erik Ellington and the Carlsbad Gap

- The iconic quote, "I'm getting fucked up tonight" has been embedded in the minds of an entire culture of skateboarders. A battle cry for triumph. Erik Ellington's last trick from the BAKER 3 video only shows the make with the famous "Ellington Shuffle", but there was an iceberg of hard work, failure, commitment, broken boards and long drives home returning empty handed.
What is it that drives a skateboarder to relentlessly pursue a brief moment of bliss at any cost? Is it determination or insanity? Most likely a balance between the two. In this battle you will see the color of the grass change, the seasons change and even Erik's hair color, but the one thing that remained consistent was his conviction that he would achieve his goal, the backside bigspin. So ,if Erik says "I'm getting fucked up tonight", then it's probably well deserved. Circa 2004 and 2005
if you think i'm really gonna sit here and watch 42 damn minutes of dude trying this trick... you're god damn right i am. love you Beagle Tapes
Your god damn right!
we need a count on how many tries
The celebration dance makes so much sense now, after watching what he went through to get that trick, the dance isn't that weird
+++++.
I never thought it was weird haha. Just that pitty ellington steaze
I wouldn't know how to react if I had gone through all that lmao
Truly
We all went through hell to get our tricks there...minus Tom Penny.
Man when I saw that the white tank was on I started to get so hyped.
Haha, definitely. I immediately thought "oh shit it's going down"
Skateboarding is hard.
Its a huge experience 🔨🗡
Can't believe I just watched 40 min of someone not landing the same trick and it was still holding my attention. Ellington is the best
especially when you already have seen the successfull one in the Baker3 Video
pretty wild sittin here thru the whole sesh as if i was there lol.
IKR!
Ellington was the coolest pro/owner I got to skate with. Ppl don't understand how big this was when it came out. Baker 3 set the bar for years to come. Still have lou reed stuck in my head. Much love beagle and baker kr3w.
I remember the premiere in Melbourne, Australia that Dollin Dustin was at, crowd went nuts during his part. I remember the next day skating through the city to the city skatepark so fucking pumped from what we’d witnessed the night before in the video. Memories!
Just ollieing that gap was gnarly. I tried ollieing the stairs and I didn't land it sadly
Now this should’ve been a My War 🤜🏻🤛🏻
There is a time limit with my war, this was more like MY WARS!!!
MY WAR: CLASSICS
@@thed.z.a.4658 how is there a time limit? It sook sammy Baca like a gazillion different trips to that rail to get his trick for baker 4 and that was a my war
Brandon K my war is new “er “ show...
It was
I've been waiting 15 years for this. Ellington is GOAT
Hell YEAH !!! Me too , Legendary 🦾
🔥
meh..
he alright..
Shit. That's as long as I've been alive.
Cadger Philosophic I’d love to see u throw yourself down that gap that many times and have someone say “he aiight”
I always wondered what happened after he did that crazy ass walk after he landed it
He tells all the story, Go to listen the podcast “the bunt” he got the last episode of the last season. Best episode IMO :)
I watched the full 42:17 and lived every slam as much as is possible watching and was blown away by EE's commitment and determination to finally land it after "two years" I guess of trying? Age 62 and just starting to skate, thank you Erik if you see this, you and Andrew are to this day my inspiration for getting me on a platform this late in life. It is sad the "gap" is gone now but,... fitting in a way. Thanks beagle and crew as well. \m/
You can always tell the session is gonna be a make, when they immediately spring back after a bail and sprint back to the start. That's that 'going for it' energy.
Good for us! Bad for Ellington's future mobility
Maybe for you, im 45 and still learn knew tricks!
@@thed.z.a.4658 I'm willing to bet none of those tricks are down anything bigger than a six.
@@lesfaul4924 Who cares what it's down? Be stoked for someone learning new tricks whether they're down a 6, 16 or flat ground
Tries a line on a trick that took seven times back. Legendary 💀💀💀
james ryan it's crazy he thought it was a line trick at first. Bro that's an ender, you don't need to waste your time with some switch tricks before that lol.
@@10DollarProductions Jeremy Wray frontside flipped it in a line in 1994's second hand smoke. Probably wanted to see if he could pay homage to that.
Sometimes doing a big trick in a line makes you commit more, it's like youre at the end of the line and you think "ok literally have to do this now"
Ll Ll I’ve been robbed so many times doing lines at 3 block in philly
@@LlLl-iz1ew That's so true. I can't skate nearly as good as these guys but throwing a few tricks down at the park always makes me full send everything.
That fucking tombstone at the bottom of the gap is what made it a scary gap. Especially going backside, you better clear that thing or RIP you. Hell yeah Erik, fuckin champ!
HELL YEAH
Battle of Carlsbad > Battle of Winterfell
I took a dump this morning that was a better battle than the Battle of Winterfell
This was top 3 moments in Baker 3.. So glad to see what it took 15 years later.. "Gettin fucked up tonight" was a common saying between my friends an I back then.
Epic af. Puts the amount of attempts I've done anything into perspective.
fo showwww!!
Damn...I wanna get out there and get me some now
Seeing the line part of carlsbad brings back amazing nostalgic memories of watching Jeremy Wray' s line over and over as a teenager. Great stuff Beagle!!
Cool to see Jamie Thomas hanging and helping out
I felt like robocop and beagle duct taped my head back on
So stoked just got home rolled a blunt sat down and see this in my notifications hell yeah time to smoke and eat this taco bell
classy
Then take a taco dump lol
In UK. Watched this with my breakfast, coffee and a wake and bake ☺
It's windy AF here today but I've gotta skate! 😁
@brokenupbeat and El Pollo Loco is better than Del Taco
Sounds like a dream say homie
I remember watching Erik’s part over and over back then, that bigspin is still so gnarly
RIP Carlsbad
Those switch flips looked so sick
Please can we get an answer on what song was playing in his headphones on the one he made?!?
everything from the claps to the celebratory scream is logded into my brain. This video seriously had such an impact on my life. Love seeing behind the scenes to see how it happened.
I love how professional Minor is during the fisheye fix. The approach, the look on his face, him not touching the lens... beautiful
30k beagle, let's go!! Big up Erik Ellington, what a fucking beast 🤘
Probably one of the greatest tricks at Carlsbad holy fuck that gap is huge
BEAGLE Tapes: Weekly meet up.
Hansol Yi!?
watching these and seeing how many tries it takes is so inspiring and motivating because when i grew up watching these videos they looked like superheroes in their video parts... really shows just how hard they worked for their tricks 🙏🏼🛹
I don't know why but 32:20 just made me laugh so hard
this is amazing
Incredible idea!
This was so great to watch
This needed to be a My War
This is so inspiring
Ellington has such underrated switch game.
His part in Misled Youth is wildly underrated
@@MC_1993 such an amazing part.
This is amazing, so humbling after all these years of basically only seeing makes , seeing the struggle . Thanks beagle ! 🙌
that was amazing its like seeing a behind the scenes of you favorite video of all time and you just keep delivering! seeing beagle fix that fisheye was so good he just seems like a really good dude
YES!!!! Let the heavyweight battle begin!
Thank you Beagle!!!
I love that hype so much. It always feels amazing to win a battle
what a moment in history. I feel blessed to see these relics
Thank you Beagle so much for this content! I love the fact you were trying to put that trick into the line at first. Like Jeremy Wray did his fs flip back then. So sick to imagine all that effort and upcomming joy of finally rolling away. So epic!
Ellington always been one of my favs !! What a battle at Carlsbad
Gladiator shit
Godamn! That was dope to watch. The determination is bleeding out of my screen! Beagle and crew has been so damn gracious to let us have a glimpse of the shit we always wanted to see.
Board break montage at the end was appreciated. Thank you
Erik Ellington knows how to battle. This was awesome. Inspiring really 🙌
The end was so worth the wait
I love how raw this footage is
Beagle
_thanks for the footage and recording these phat sessions._
this tapes are pure gold for baker fans! the whole story of this trick! god bless you beagle!!!
This gives me such a high level of respect for the filters who have the patience and skill to put together these dope parts that we take for granted. The amount of work it takes to get one clip is incredible.
1 of my faves right here!!! Dudes a legend!! I'm loving how those switch flips where flipping down that 4!!!🔥🔥💯
For some reason I enjoyed the camera getting mooried up. Sick footage as always. Crazy shhhh
TWO ellington vids that are both over 20 minutes each in the same week... we are all being blessed this week. I swear ta gawd.
That dance at the end is one of the most epic things ever
Fuckin loving these videos!! It’s cool seeing a montage of tricks but the behind the scenes runs are truly epic
This was sick!
Big Thanks!
Watching every single try is my way of paying some respect to this dude. Also to beagle's back, bended over the whole time to get them angles.
That was Epic!🔥🔥🔥
SUCH a battle!
Watching this helped me commit to my skating more
this is what I've been waiting for :D
What a battle!
Im always hyped to see what the Carlsbad layout looks like! Back in the day i found this hilly area in the forest(behind my house) that was exactly like the Carlsbad Gap just smaller! I shaped it to look like the spot even more than it already was using wood to make the roll up/landing/retaining wall at bottom and long tree branches for the rail.I had planned on fixing everything up with concrete but never ended up doing it. Some skateboarding company needs to make exact replicas of classic spots!
Erik is literally the most down to earth and humble skater there is. I accidentally message him on Instagram once and he started to have a full conversation with me and now he's my Instagram friend. He also sends me pictures of shoes he designs. Mad respect.
This is the deffinition of never give up🤟👊😲
i need therapy after watching this.
Physical therapy
dude this is so cool since that spot doesnt exist anymore. i remember hearing someone talk about the diff reasons it was such a hard spot and one of em was that the landing spot was kinda inclined and you can see that here 24:28 where the board just stops and starts rolling back on its own. great documentation dude!!! (my english is not great)
btw absolutely loved the video description
Best style in the game.. ever. The mule is the man! 7 times back is pure dedication!
So raw
im 36 and i miss carlsbad. it was in every mag when i was a kid and seeing it in videos was so exciting. also this is one of skating's great battles, its in the pages
This was epic
What a battle
I’m just here to not hit the skip button on the adverts so I can get my man @Beagle paid!!!
that was some amazing war.............. respect!
Those switch flips are so fucking nice. I love EE.
Absolute battle
History....pure history
RIP Carlsbad
This felt amazing to see him get it after all that.
Legendary
This is dedication and pure will.🤙🤙 carlsbad defeated me and my ankles when I tried
Respect. What did you try over it?
@@yolocrew98 just an ollie in ~2005 which for me was really big. Never learned how to roll correctly from a bail lol.
Hes got a great attitude just like muska at that handrail by the bus station a few beagle tapes ago
damn this was life changing
fa real
EE bigspin, switch flip, and switch fs flips are some of the most stylish tricks ever done.
The definitive “persistence video” 👀
Hermoso.
This trick is such a metaphor for all great things in life. No one sees the multiple days, multiple hours and the fucking slams that go into this amazing trick. I remember the first time I saw the Baker 3 video, I REALLY fucked with Ellington after that and knew I was sleeping on him. Great fucking video.
that might be the best trick of all time honestly. definitely top 10 especially after seeing the other angle, holy shit
I once spent 2 12 hour days trying to varialheel a 9 stair. I don't know how the hell you huck down Carlsbad like that shit. Mad respect
hats off
pure raw street skating 💪🏾
That was intense !!!!
That stress walk when hes just walking and throwing and focusing his board.......... so relatable 🤣
legend
