Crisis in the Horn of Africa: Somalia's Famine - REWIND

  • About 10 years ago, in November 2006, Al Jazeera English was launched. To mark that anniversary, we've created REWIND, which updates some of the channel's most memorable and award-winning documentaries of the past decade. We find out what happened to some of the characters in those films and ask how the stories have developed in the years since our cameras left.
    In 2011, the worst drought in 60 years threw some 13 million people across the Horn of Africa into crisis. In Somalia, ravaged by two decades of conflict, the consequences were disastrous. Hundreds of thousands starved to death, many of them children.
    In the midst of this human catastrophe Fault Lines travelled to Mogadishu to meet refugees who had fled to the most war-ravaged city in the world to escape an even worse fate, and the aid and medical workers struggling to help them.
    Fault Lines sought to discover whether aid in this region had become politicised and whether Washington's preoccupation with "terrorism" in the Horn of Africa had contributed to the deadly consequences of this disaster.
    Nisar Majid, a food security expert and co-author of Famine in Somalia, talks to REWIND about the fallout of the famine and the current situation in Somalia. As aid agencies are warning that five million people in Somalia are again facing acute food shortages due to drought, have lessons been learned?
    "The situation remains extremely complicated. You still have al-Shabab controlling large parts of southern Somalia and you still have an atmosphere, a difficult operating environment where counterterrorism legislation and the threat of legal action is in place. And where there's a very kind of risk-averse international community who are worried about legal threats, reputational threats by their resources being diverted into the wrong hands ... The situation remains very complicated and the political issues always take precedence in the end and it depends on how those dynamics play out."

      Phil Nolan they were the " start " of the issue. pretty much that's the truth. especially how the borders were drawn, that was very bad for certain regions of Africa.

    What a failed state! To be in a state of famine the moment food aid stops is a telling sign of a country living way beyond its means.

    i loved somali's and i always prayed for somalia, But some of the somali's are not good people at all. They discriminate other Africans, call Black africans slaves etc . They call you brother if they need something from you. once you say salam to him/her, you will be asked are u a muslim? i pray that somali's clean their hearts fist, Somalia will be at peace one day.

    • @MohamedHassan-ni6un
      @MohamedHassan-ni6un 7 років тому +2

      @mpigiful, Did you ever get a chance to confront your beloved Somali acquaintances? I'm sure there was a misunderstanding there somewhere. I used to wonder why I had so many West African friends until my sister got married. The love slowly disappeared. But I never blamed them I just said they love their women too much.
      The Somalis were historically taught of having Arab roots hence the awkwardness when we are amongst people who are proud to be black. That Arab blood folktale is no longer dominant and the people are starting to wake up. The question is my brother, is Africa ready to take us back? It's a shame ...

    • @mpigiful
      @mpigiful 7 років тому +5

      Mohamed, i know somali people well. that is why i said some are not good not all of you.
      I have met them in europe, Africa (mostly in Kenya- Eastleigh, Uganda- Kisenyi Mengo,) some are Urban Refugees , some are Naturalised citizens .once you meet agood Somali , you will always love to be near him/her. Most of the Somali families don't welcome other africans . you might be different but not all of them.
      I can tell a 2hrs story about Somali people the vgood and the bad.
      But my wish is to see peace in Somalia for the young Generation.
      ................Peace In Somalia is my dream................ Insha'Allah.

      mpigiful you are so right God is punishing them people for how they treat other Africans. They are cursed and messed up. Always fighting each other and others but cannot feed or support themselves AGAIN. Yet they run to their Arab masters who treat them like abeed and take their organs when they are not looking at their masters. Even in the west they refuse to work take welfare and rely on aid and cause problems. Your reap what you sow.

      Reeper rad.. we all know *F* words but if you think I am from West Africa you're wrong. I am from East Africa. let me tell this stop living in denial and find a way to bring back Somalia and somalis together. Just know one thing.. you will always be somali first. I am sure wherever you stay now.. You're just a Naturalised Citizen. that mean you will always have Somalia in you're database.. grow up. stop that childish thinking.

    Somehow,even this famine and continuous war serves a purpose.The question is who does it serve.The U.S always shows its super weapons and yet they don't ever use them,news crews can find these fighters,but Americans...No.The constant changing of allies and the giving of weapons to almost everybody will make sure that this will go on and on.I think that making all these children into their world is also beyond my understanding.

    So USA was traditionally the most generous with aid and thus, if they don't give as much then they are at fault. It's about time USA stays home & minds their own business. Let the other countries be generous and get blamed if they don't give as much some day. Africa needs to stop hating each other or prosperity will never come to the people.

    This is soo funny. So, allowing free range of action to the Islamic Courts was the solution? Maybe they would have just been a merry bunch of very moderate and progressive Imams? Maybe Al-Shabaab would have "remained a very tiny fraction of them"? ARE YOU PEOPLE SERIOUS? Let's ot forget what channel we are watching...

    You have to ask yourself: how can a country with the resources that somalia has struggle to prosper? how is it that somalia has the largest coast in africa,but still cannot capture fish for their own survival? Several foreign governments have supported different "democratic" leaders that no one in somalia has heard of, and as suspected they quickly gain power. why are the united nations,oxfam,red cross still in somalia when they are doing nothing to better the situation? any foreign company should be throwed out of somalia until somalis has 100% control of each area of government, in a DEMOCRATIC election, not tribal bullshit! Alshabaab has been killing somalis for the longest without any reason, weird isnt it? that the nomads suddenly started using bombs as a way to cause harm and fear to civilians. who is feeding these alshabaab people with their resources and money to keep the somalis as prisoners? People need to understand that somalis are more than ready to change their country but are not being able to by SEVERAL INTERNATIONAL FORCES. its not as easy as to say " move to the other side of somalia"

      Jaims Sheek when white imperialists deny you hope and peace that is when a country like Somalia can't use its wealth and resources. This destruction and atrocities are designed and implemented by a guy who has bigger guns and political clout. Somalia will continue to suffer like the rest of Islamic nations we are one we will suffer together and prosper together, that's why I have been watching the news last 15 years because I know when our suffering will end
