  • The ongoing civil war has caused serious damage to Somalia's infrastructure and economy. Thousands of Somalis have either left as economic migrants or fled as refugees. Most spent months, if not years, in refugee camps aboard. Around 200,000 Somalis refugees have fled to Yemen and roughly 50,000 to the UAE. There are around 150,000 Somalis living in Canada, 100,000 in the UK and 85,000 in the US.
    Within Somali, more than a million people are internally displaced.
    "There are more than 1.1 million people displaced from their homes and their original places of living. 1.1 million people. There's certainly nearly that same number who are reliant upon food assistance from the United Nations agency and other donors, nearly a million people who can't meet their own food needs," says Nicholas Kay, United Nations special representative for Somalia.
    Somalia receives aid from both the UN and the Arab League - of which it is a member - how it's allocated and where it goes can sometimes appear inconsistent.
    Many Somalis have sought refuge in neighbouring countries, hoping to return to Somalia once the civil war dies down. Ethiopia has become home to 4.6 million Somalis and Kenya to over 2 million. After a series of Al-Shabaab attacks in Kenya starting in 2011, the Kenyan government began ordering Somalis back into refugee camps and some to return to Somalia.
    Other Somalis have even fled to war-torn Libya, a hub for human traffickers who export them to the full. From there, they must make the often treacherous sea journey to Europe and then by land to onward destinations. Those who survive can encounter a wide range of problems - but sometimes find help from established Somali communities.
    With the collapse of government, Somalis have often turned to their tribes, clans and sub-clans to fill the void, and clan allegiances can extend beyond Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya into the diaspora. "The clan is a wonderful form of insurance," says the BBC's Africa Editor, Mary Harper. "Because if I arrive in London and I'm from a particular Somali clan, I'll find my Somali clan brothers and sisters and they'll look after me. If I don’t have any money, they'll give me money to maybe start a business and maybe I’ll pay it back. If I don’t have anywhere to live, they'll help me find somewhere to live. So they really, really look after each other."
    "The Somali community in the UK has been in existence long before the state collapsed," says Laura Hammond, Senior Lecturer in Development Studies at SOAS, the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. "As a community the Somali community is suffering quite a lot from a lack of integration which is caused not just by their own difficulties, learning the language or figuring out so-called British life. But it’s also about structural exclusions that are put in place. So it’s very difficult for them to find jobs, it's very difficult for them to solve their immigration status. It can take them years to actually gain citizenship."
    Abdi Warsame and Abdirizak Bihi are part of the Somali community in Minneapolis in Minnesota state in the US. Warsame has become an elected member of Minneapolis City Council and has worked hard to ensure that his people are properly and evenly represented at the municipal level. Bihi runs the Somali Education Advocacy Center: "In 1996 I moved here from Washington DC to work with the refugees I’ve seen in camps. So I knew the challenges they’ll face here. I became an interpreter, a counselor, a cultural broker. We’d train them to or help get Somali speaking personnel so they could address the issues that the new Americans were facing. And it’s not really easy to be black, Muslim and immigrant."
    When Aboukar Awale came to the UK in 1997, he found mafrishes, cafes where Somali men would drink tea and chew the addictive stimulant khat. He himself became an addict - but the drug is now banned in the UK, thanks to the campaign spearheaded by Awale. However, it's still a big problem among young Somalis and so he's now taken his campaign to the streets of Somalia itself: "I thought if I am lucky, then what about the children of Somalia, and those being raised who think khat is a good thing? And that's how I started this campaign."
    Like many Somalis across the diaspora, Awale hopes deeply that one day he’ll be able to return to help re-build his homeland: "It will happen inshallah. It might not happen in ten years; it might not happen in maybe 20 years. But one day… It just breaks my heart. But inshallah, Somalia will come back. Someday Somalia will be back."

    I really hope to see Somalia united and stable again as it was long time ago. Those who think Somalia has always been a horrible place, I advise them to read history; Somalia was once a stable and prosperous country inhabited by educated and civilized nation. We love you Somali people..Best wishes and greeting to all Somali people from the people of Sudan.

      Warsame Warsama Yeah, tha's also weird. I wasn't aware of the clans until recently though and that doesnt exist in my country. We really dont care which ethnic group they're from either. I follow somalifaces and they talked about this women that was looked down upon for being "midgan" which is a clan and there is literally no difference between them genetically, like wow.. And let's not start with the somali bantus.

All i have said for those that might not understand kiswahili is, as a Kenyan and to my fellow Somali brothers and sister, I stand with you and one day we shall have peace in Somalia. I urge my fellow Kenyans and the Somali brothers to see if we can work together and have some form of federation for the two countries. In my honest opinion Kenya working with Somalis especially from the diaspora we can change the attitude of our people and create a peaceful Somalia with a political federation of the two countries and her people. Love💘 and peace from Kenya.

    Somalia would have been a powerful state had it not been partitioned into regions by imperialists/colonialists. They are one people with one language and one religion - that alone is quite extraordinary. If only somali people could put clanism to aside and unite, they can be a very strong, powerful country in the world. Somalis - remember forming small region states based on clan will never succeed and only empower your enemies around you who don't want to see a functioning, successful, united country called SOMALIA. I hope & pray somali people realise this sooner rather than later especially the younger generation. You have got a beautiful country with huge resources & the longest coast in Africa!!

      Forget about the past, Somalia has had so many chances but the educated peoples who could instigate the infrastructure and development needed all ran away to live on benefits in Europe, The Islamic international community was too busy paying for arms and mosques to promote their ideals of salafi sharia community, whilst the normal people starved and died...colonialism happened, its done, cannot be undone, Somalias problems are the problems with human nature, greed, corruption and a lack of communal empathy..Had it not been so easy for the people to flee they may have had no option but to rebuild and invest themselves in the future of the nation.

    • @amirahhmukhtarxx7129
      @amirahhmukhtarxx7129 4 роки тому

      I’m so happy that there are Somalis who think like you. Clanism is our biggest problem; we literally have one people, one religion, one culture and one language yet we are desperate to hold our selves back in terms of financial progression purely because of clanism? Do you see how imbecilic that sounds. Inshallah I hope my people realize we don’t need these clans, it’s even infected the diaspora. I see so many teens my age(18) wearing Somaliland, Puntland, jubaland, konfuur, galmudug and Ogadenia bracelets on their wrists and celebrating different independence days. It’s honestly heartbreaking man😓

      Jai Nepal I agree with you, leaving the country was a mistake many of our parents made. But inshallah I know a lot of Somalis my age who have realized living in these countries is not our eng goal. Inshallah my plan is to finish uni, and come to Somalia and use my knowledge to rebuild the greater Somalia and to spread the message of stopping clanism. It upsets me so much when my mum tells me of her blessed child hood in Somalia and how her sibling went to university in Somalia and her parents were teachers and engineers, growing up as a diaspora we have had to deal with stuff we didn’t need to. Inshallah all the Somali diasporas think like me and won’t to go back to rebuild a powerful nation thy we can be proud of

    • @IslamLondon1
      @IslamLondon1 7 років тому +8

      Totally agree. The language of the Muslims should be Arabic. If you want you can hate the corrupt leaders of the Arab Wahhabi countries but don't hate the blessed language which the Qur’aan was revealed in.

      Somali ppl are multy cultural society , we speak different language, some speaks Arabic, and they have right to speak their mother langugae, no one can force them to speak somali, they are originaly Yemen and Oman, other speak Swahili, like BRAVE AND BAJUN, we also some clan speaks OROMO language like Garre tripe, those who criticise the girl in this documentary for speaking Arabic are nomand people, they have never been big cities like Mogadishu, marka, brave etc

    • @Jordan-xg4pn
      @Jordan-xg4pn 7 років тому +7

      Because this documentary isn't about islam, It's about somalia and therefore somali should be spoken if she knows the language. Arabic should be her second language as a somali, and somali her first.
      But personally I didn't react on it at all, clearly they don't see that arabic = islam in this situation. Since the arab league is something they see as negative and associate (obviouslly) the language with itself. They want to leave the arab league and the language is included aswell.

    Somaliland, puntland, and jubaland are peaceful and have functioning governments. Mogadishu is plagued with warfare and I don't see a rising Somalia if Mogadishu remains to be the capital. Somali leaders must hand over the capital to northerners and let them develop Somalia. This problem that continues to plague the heart of Somalia will be fixed instantly.

      If the whole south is not safe then why put your capital in the south. It's been 25 years since the start of the civil war. Don't you guys think there must be something wrong with the idea of not moving the capital in the north. Puntland did experience some alshabab attacks but they were able to destroy them in a week while all these ex warlords in xamar who used to kill each other like rats are now too afraid to fight alshabab relying on Amisom for protection. Move your capital to Bossaso or garowe so more people can star investing in Somalia. This problem in the south is something only southerners can fix. They need to unite and solve their problem. for your information, many countries such as turkey, Nigeria, Pakistan have ongoing armed conflicts but they still have functioning governments because they don't have their capital in their worst part of their countries.

    • @zakp8687

    How can the government let outsiders fish in our waters and make billions on the sale of the fish to their wholesaler. While the Somali fishermen are struggling to survive? It is an act of war for foreign ships to be in our waters. They have to buy the fish from our fishermen and pay us the billion dollars and they take 15 percent. Not the other way around it is our fish. First we have to make sure our Somali people have enough fish to eat and sell. What ever we have left over; we will sell at top price our sea is rich. Get rid of that official who is letting them steal and rob our waters. Where is our army? That would be a good job for them to protect our sea the fish belongs to all Somalis.

      i think they called khawarij even our Prophet Muhammad warned us of the rise of religious extremism in this age in astonishing detail. 1,400 years ago, he prophesized that a time would come when nothing would remain of Islam but its name, nothing of the Quran but its word, and that many “Mosques would be splendidly furnished but destitute of guidance” (Mishkatul Masabih). In these latter days, the true spiritual essence of Islam would be lost, and religion, for the most part, would be reduced to a ritualistic compulsion. He foretold that the clergy would be corrupt and be a source of strife during these times.
