I once saw a documentary about her which included interviews with her in her later years. She attested that she left Paris after the war "because it was no longer interesting." Naturally, she made no mention that a large percentage of the French population wanted to shave her head and string her up.
It's important to remember that the events here affected real people who are living today. The area in France where my mother was born was occupied by Nazis when she was 14. She saw jewish friends and neighbors taken off, first to Orléans then to extermination camps. Her family had been locally prominent in the previous century, but now was viciously divided between collaborators and resistors. After the war, she saw female collabotators stripped naked and forced to walk village streets while angry neighbors threw stones and filth at them. People she knew executed others she knew or knew of. She became a fashion model in Paris in the very early years after the war, before models were glamorous and widely known. She had a deep, abiding dislike and disregard for Chanel, always calling her a sell-out and traitor. Collaborators caused real harm among their countrymen.

Chanel invented a style to mask her deformities! She was rather tall for her time cca.160-62 cm with sharp pointed knees and elbows and a flat breast and behind so far from the feminine 90-60-90 and therefore had to wear very loose garments. See that all her models and most customers have a rather similar body build. I have not seen many women like Monroe Bardot or Ekberg wear a Chanel suit. Wallis Simpson who had a similar conformation was an avid customer
in fact, many great individuals that shaped humankind's history in that period have been affiliated with the Nazis - the fact that doesn't compromise the value of their input.
@@pitchblease989 Indeed it doesn't compromise the value of their input. It only shows what terrible human beings they were. As I said in my original comment
No matter her input, she most definitely was A TERRIBLE HUMAN. As many are. Narcissists often do "Big Things" but at what cost? Their Loved Ones usually suffer at their hands. In the End, they die and are held to account just like everyone else. The carnage they leave in their wake included.
I believe her entanglement with the Nazis party is still relevant today. It should continue to be discussed as should others which held that political bias. Hold people to account for their actions of the past, present and, future is the only way to view history in a fair, clear manner. No matter who you are, Justice is Justice. All need to be held to the same standards.

Wonderful video. Thank you! I have asked my family for a bottle of Number 5 for a forthcoming birthday; I now have mixed feelings about this! But it is a lovely perfume ...
Another excellent episode, what a life Coco Chanel had! Wonderfully narrated and fascinating from start to finish. What a business woman, but as many successful businesses to come out of WW2, collaboration with the Nazis was key to that success. Keep up the great work.
And what most of us would have done to survive or protect loved ones in such situations? Easy for people separated from events by distance, or in our case, time.
There must be some very strict copyright rules or some such thing around showing any of the items that are discussed, including the iconic "Little Black Dress," or even Coco herself. I have watched other documentaries on Chanel that talk about, but never show, her or her earlier creations. Instead, there are vague shots of Paris, the ocean, old cars -- things from the period but not the pieces or people being discussed. This make the documentary more like a podcast.
I noted that too. Of what good is that for though? For someone like me in Africa, I'd have really loved to see and learn about my favourite icon whose perfumes I've used for over two decades but I know nothing about the designer.
I'm disgusted & disappointed that Jacqueline Kennedy would have chosen to wear Chanel--ever! Disappointing. I know she spoke French, but she should've known better!
I had just recently learned of her Nazi connections. Your documentary is very well done and taught me a lot more. This knowledge has definitely altered my view of her and of that name. Hmm 🤔
Excellent production!! Let’s look at this through a different lens. Is it that Ms. Channel was an Antisemitic? Or was she a self serving businesswoman? And a lone woman protecting what she had built buy the means available to her. Look at her upbringing which must be considered. She tried to take advantage of an unforeseen opportunity to take sole ownership of her company(sleazy for sure). She used men wisely. Could Coco have been a double agent for the British. There’s more to her story than great designer/Nazi collaborator.
You could be right.. I knew about her "collaborating" with Germans, but..... was highly surprised, when just recently reading Daniel's Steel book "Spy", in which she tells by the words of the heroine, who became a secret agent for Britain Special Service during WWII and leading missions behind enemy lines, that she was parachuted in France where she had to make acquaintances with high rank Germán officers So, she headed to Paris, to hotel Ritz, where she was supposed to get great help in making those meetings from....... Coco Chanel, and the latest alongside provided her with the best attire needed for evening occasions. So, in the book, Coco Chanel was clearly pictured as an agent helping Britain and French Resistance to fight with Nazi Germans. I believe, she might be a double agent. And, by the way ... the agents were to keep a secret they had worked for Secret Services for twenty years. So, she couldn't legally defend herself. On the other hand.... such agents never quit, at least just go on providing any helpful information whenever they live, and whatever they do....
Great points and insights for consideration. Thx for these points. Doesn't make everything right, of course, but gives possibly more clarity to motives. Also, I'm wondering if the same scrutiny and criticism would have been given to a man in her position. Plus, jealousy, as you mentioned...
That’s what I was wondering. It would be interesting to see what she looked like, as I wouldn’t know as I don’t follow celebrities, of past or present.
I think, one might also consider the possibility she was a great British Spy with her close relationship with Winston Churchill…🤔 I do hope one day they prove this to be fact! I did enjoy this documentary though.
Channel has been Jewish owned since the paperwork they talk about. But yea wow this was surprising. I think it’s safe to own today. Crazy documentary though I’m shocked the company turned all that around.
Firstly, thank you for taking the time to put together this documentary, I found it interesting and fascinating. Very thought provoking. I had no idea Coco Chanel had such a chequered past. I don't think I would like her if I had the misfortune to meet her. BUT, now that the Alan Wertheiner's family have control I would definitely support them, BUT based on Coco Chanelle's behaviour and lack of ethics, NO!, I would never support her. I am pleased to say, I never liked Chanell No 5, Dior always resonated with me, but not Chanell! Thank you for a wonderfully informative documentary on Coco......I so appreciate your honesty.

Has there ever been a successful woman in the world who was not bankrolled first by her lover or her husband ! Jane Astor, Jaqueline Kennedy / Onasis, Coco Chanelle etc. Just a thought ! If the Jewish family who she attempted to rob, hated her so much, then why did they keep her iconic name on the product. The narrator of this story explained that Wertheimer was himself afraid that if her collaboration activities were to be made public it would have adverse effects on the profits of the company. Proving to all that he was much more interested in profits than unveiling this loathsome Nazi collaborator to the world. I am sure that the victims and survivors of the Holocaust would not be too impressed on hearing of his decision to place profits over honor !

It was very interesting. "All secret becomes clear" Thank you!
Great documentary. I learned a lot, I only knew it as a luxury company.
Ironic how the Jewish Wertheimer's were only too happy to do business with her again as soon as they realized it would be profitable to do so.
@@den264did they make a fortune by this business arrangement? They should have as they were responsible for the perfumes creation, and were in charge of all the marketing. Have u watched the documentary?
Thank you for this biography on Coco Chanel... truly a fashion icon❤. Well done 💋
That was a shame, she sided with Nazis.
Man I'm so glad I found this channel, luckily today I get an afternoon nap story

Excellent documentary on one of the world's most famous fashion designers. Bravo!
Bravo??? She was a Nazi, not a Nazi sympathizer. Let's not play with words. And when compared to the events of WWII in the hardships and cruelty faced by the French people at the hands of the Nazis oh, who cares about fashion? Come on, really?
@@michaelwilson5346she did not join the nazi party, as she was not a german so she was not a nazi.
Coco invents the product, applies her iconic name to it then the Wertheimer family move in and take the lot !
I wonder if even one dollar of the billions in profits made by the Wertheimer family went to assisting the poorest families of the Holocaust !

She was a Nazi collaborator, which means she helped the Nazis. Which means she aided a pack of Murderous Bigots. Why are you cool w/ that?
There were also citizens of Poland, Hungary, Austria, Italy & other nations who helped the Nazis to murder innocent Jews, including babies & children. We must assume by your words that you'd give them a pass for not being German, too. Why?
Hey, were you one of those slimeballs carrying torches & goose-stepping across Charlottesville a few years ago, screaming out your terror of being "replaced by Jews"? Wouldn't be surprising.
Nazis are Not "very fine people", btw. The only folks who think they are? Fellow Nazis. Instead, Nazis are Dangerous Trash, just walking toxins, poisonous to society... both the OG & the newfangled varieties. Most people who know their history will Never Forget. It's just That horrendous. Pick some better "heroes" to worship. Maybe the kind who help others, instead of slaughtering them w/ Mindless Hate.
@@michaelwilson5346 Yes, she was a Nazi sympathizer. I was saying "Bravo" to the content creator's work. The overall presentation still highlighted one of the 20th century's first, most successful, female fashion designers. Not even you can take that away from CoCo Chanel despite her being a Nazi sympathizer.
Great documentary, thank you
Thanks, it was a very interesting documentary
Great job. Excellent video. Well researched. Just saw a movie about coco chanel with Audrey t. In the early years. Right after the boyfriend Capel has the car accident and died. Never mentioned once about her nazi collaboration. Her ties or connections. Loved the movie. It is on u tube. So glad I saw this video. Eye opening.
Was it the 2008 lifetime movie about coco chanel?
Her lover was a nazi.
Don't think it was on lifetime. On a utube movie. You can look it up.
You have a good voice for bedtime so I'm going to have to listen to this documentary and see if your voice helps me sleep. Plus I love documentaries so thank you!
It does😂
Thank you for this information.
Love your content guys! Suggestion: Franz Joseph the last great Emperor of europe

Wallis was a hermaphrodite.
What very insightful biography
GREAT DESIGNER- LOVE HER DESIGN OF CHANEL JACKET’S🙏🏻🌹🌿🫶🇮🇸👍
Great designer, loathsome human
Aren't a great many of us less than perfect?
@@dcollins4679 I'd say we all are, but this is more than less than perfect, I'd hope you would see that
in fact, many great individuals that shaped humankind's history in that period have been affiliated with the Nazis - the fact that doesn't compromise the value of their input.
Which part the Justice portion or Historical perspective?
Either way you're "entitled" to your opinion. “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.” Writer and Philosopher George Santayana
She was a single aging woman trying to survive. She was a survivor all her life.
Wonderful video. Thank you!
I have asked my family for a bottle of Number 5 for a forthcoming birthday; I now have mixed feelings about this! But it is a lovely perfume ...
Yes, I just said to my friend that it’s made me a tad sad. Number 5 is my favourite perfume. Does taint it a tad. 🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
It’s crazy the company was able to turn that around.
Thank you for being sad about chanel brand. It's been owned by the Jewish family for a long time now.
Yes, it’s awful
I may keep wearing No 5 but seeking other pieces or branded pieces are now off my list
Gréât documentaire like always 👌
Thanks!
Another excellent episode, what a life Coco Chanel had! Wonderfully narrated and fascinating from start to finish. What a business woman, but as many successful businesses to come out of WW2, collaboration with the Nazis was key to that success. Keep up the great work.
@DonnellxxOkafor Hugo Boss designed the Nazi uniforms.
Go kick rocks
@@chemicalqueen5460 He made the uniforms but he didn't design them.
And what most of us would have done to survive or protect loved ones in such situations? Easy for people separated from events by distance, or in our case, time.
@@dcollins4679 She was very rich she didn't need to betray her partner to survive.
Enjoyed this
I'm disgusted & disappointed that Jacqueline Kennedy would have chosen to wear Chanel--ever! Disappointing. I know she spoke French, but she should've known better!
But Jacqueline Kennedy was not herself a model of virtue.
Very informative
Good for Wertheimer for getting the majority of the company, too bad Chanel still remained rich.
Interesting, but very odd not to have more photographs or film footage of Chanel, herself. Everything but....
Remind me again what did Sean Connery do? If you get that congratulations.
This was fascinating!
Well researched
Brilliant video ❤
I had just recently learned of her Nazi connections. Your documentary is very well done and taught me a lot more. This knowledge has definitely altered my view of her and of that name. Hmm 🤔
An interesting story
A remarkable woman
Coco Chanel is my favourite perfume
Amazing designer. ❤
Since I heard of her collaboration with the nazis I have never bought anything Chanel. Including the makeup line
I wondered that too with her apparent friendship with Churchill. And him seemingly going to bat for her after the war.
Excellent points! Maybe this is the true back story. I hope so.😢
You could be right..
Why does this video have pictures of all relevant characters EXCEP Ms Chanel herself?
That’s what I was wondering. It would be interesting to see what she looked like, as I wouldn’t know as I don’t follow celebrities, of past or present.

I think, one might also consider the possibility she was a great British Spy with her close
relationship with
Winston Churchill…🤔 I do hope one day they prove this to be fact!
I did enjoy this documentary though.
Maybe she was a double agent of sorts.
Very interesting profile, I’ll never purchase Canal number 5 again..
Well then take Ford Motor, General Motors, IBM, Bayer, Kodak, Hugo Boss, Volkswagon, Siemens, Coca-Cola, Standard Oil, and the list goes on.

The french Hugo Boss
@actonman7291: Stop the nonsense, and learn history. the late Hugo Boss, was a German businessman and a founder of the Nazi Party!
Hugo Boss was a part of the SS and Hitler's party they designed the uniforms for forward to soldiers in Germany
I didnt know boujois was part of chanel at one time.
Amazing
Thank you so ❤
What a disgrace and yet a visionary! Ahead of time by far
BUT it’s shameful part of her past, I wondered if she ever realized her mistake and tried to amend it
That would be interesting to know. She lived long enough to put it into perspective and at least try and make amends.
Les cocottes ne se repentent jamais et embellissent et déforment toujours la réalité surtout avec de tels amants et amis bien nés, c'est la même chose pour Arletty
Channels’ logi against her German-Jewish pattern was based on hatred. So, her choice to undermine him through the Nazi Hate machine is not surprising. It is however shocking to know that one who created such a fascinating line could hold at heart such hate. 😢
Well, I thank you for sharing this historical Doc. I just feel somewhat disheartened over time seeing more and more accounts of the supposed Elite from France. I regularly purchased her products but I believe I will be purchasing other Brand’s. Maybe 🤔 I just need to research more about key, important historical people and events. Wow, CHANNEL 🤦🏻♀️. I do appreciate the Narrator...excellent choice.
I wonder why Churchill interviened for her😮
Sexual relationship... He was a major womanizer.
Churchill couldn't care less about Jews. His concern was the UK being ruled by Germany

Thank you , very interesting. Sad to learn of her wartime activities and her effort to cheat her business partner was awful. Looks like he knew what type of person she was. Thankfully they were all o.k. Still, I do love her perfume and the name Chanel is still synonymous with fashion. Nice that the original partners were able to do so well. 🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
What would you have her do? Single handedly thrown out every member of an occupying force? Some ww2 French resistance fighting happened because it was paid for.

Why is it sad, they are facts and history. It's neither sad nor happy, it's just the truth. No need to become emotional.
@@dcollins4679 I think the lesson here is that one cannot ignore politics. Wherever you are in the world you cannot say 'I'm not interested in politics' or that 'I won't listen to such and such a politician because I don't like what he/she says'. Look what happened in the US on account of many gullible people knowing nothing about Trump. We need to identify authoritarian individuals and soundly reject them.
