Amazing interview - a real pleasure to listen to - well done you guys. Phil Manzanera is one of the most underrated rock guitarists in the world - he has a unique inventive style - one that made learn the guitar. What an amazing personality as welll.
Fantastic interview with Phil. That Kanye story in particular is wonderful. Am also hoping for a part three. Despite a lengthy chat, it felt like the surface was only scratched about his Roxy career. Still the only band where I love every single album.
Absolutely fascinating! Great stories. Always a fan of Roxy, so original, Every Dream Home a Heartache is a favourite song, that springs to mind among many great recordings. As a huge Dylan fan, I actually watched that Guitar Legends concert from Seville, with him, as it was broadcast on a bank holiday on the BBC, where it stood out in the TV listings from the usual dross, like a beacon for me, and I tuned in expectantly. And though Dylan , apart from seeming as if he'd had a few too many, maybe Keith Richards influence! was obviously uninterested in proceedings, gargling his way through first, in the programme's running order, All Along the Watchtower, with Phil and Jack Bruce, etc, putting everything into it, while Bob eventually mumbles something before the song ends. Then onto Dylan acoustic, accompanied by Richard Thompson, another hero of mine, and Dylan again is very half hearted for Spanish Boots of Spanish Leather- rushing the words as if he wants to get it over with as quickly as possible, while Richard plays a beautiful solo; but, as the song ends, and without pausing at all, Dylan goes into a song recorded by Ry Cooder, Across the Borderline - a TexMex song from 1947? and Dylan is suddenly transformed, now looking straight into the camera, rather than at his feet, clearly pronouncing every word, and makes this song, ostensibly about desperate people trying to cross the US border from Mexico, into something, for me, movingly personal, while Richard again plays beautifully - and this is one of my favourite Dylan live performances! Dylan then gets rid of Richard, and plays solo, a great version of Answer Me My Love, a big hit for Barbara Dickson! Dylan then enthusiastically joins Keith Richards and others, in some classic rock and roll numbers. So interesting for me to hear Phil's recounting of how this all came about. Thanks to him - seems such a nice, as well as very interesting, guy, and great musician, and to the two of you - another great listen.
The song K -SCOPE from the GREAT Phil album K SCOPE, was released on Polydor records, early in 1978. It has been my fave PHIL album for 46 years! " Remote control, OH YEAH !"
When I started my working life in south London back in the early 1970’s, one of my work colleagues told me this story regarding Phil Manzanera. My colleague lived in Dulwich and - unbeknownst to him, close to Phil’s family home. One day, my colleague saw Phil arriving/leaving (maybe the “fly’s eye” sunglasses gave Mr. Manzanera away) My colleague said to one of their older neighbours “That’s Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music. They’re in the charts”. The older neighbour said (something like) “Nah. That’s Mrs. Targett - Adams boy, young Phillip. He’s just popped in to see his Mum!” Can’t believe Phil is in his seventh decade.
Thank you guys and Phil ! Roxy Music tour story 1979: I had W.E.A. promotional tickets to see Roxy Music's first US show, March 28, 1979 at the Montgomery County Community college, which was located in a small Philadelphia suburb called Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. Montgo CCC was built on cow pastures! The Concert auditorium was about 500 seats set apart a bit from the rest of the Montgo Campus. This gig was apparently an add on gig- a warm up to start the tour. It was my first ROXY concert, and like many of the available 1979 recorded shows, my Manifesto show was superb. As you can imagine, this concert location was quite isolated, even from the rest of the Montgo campus. Security was light. At the end of the gig, some creep snuck backstage, and grabbed an unattended electric guitar, and took off! The concert security did see the thief as he ran guitar losely held at the neck through the rocky, uneven former pasture. As several guards closed in, the slug realised the jig was up! In a desperate attempt the thief hurled the guitar, to avoid capture. The guitar sailed, then landed on a rock severely damaging the guitar. The perp was apprehended. When the guitar was returned to Phil Manzanera, it was not a good moment. The guitar actually was NOT Phil's! It was on loan from Graham Gouldman of 10CC! 21:38

No wonder the Kanye sample became his superannuation, it's not just a snippet, it's the riff that underpins the entire track! ua-cam.com/video/FJt7gNi3Nr4/v-deo.html

Didn't know there was a second part, but I'm glad it's here. 🌅

One of my favourite guitarists of all time.

Great stuff. Really enjoyed it. Cheers.
Part 2 ends kind of abruptly. Could there be a part 3 coming? Love Phil's The Sound Of Blue CD.
Thank you guys and Phil !
