  • Review of the Denix Replica 1851 Navy Confederate revolver.
The Colt 1851 Navy was used by both sides in the American civil war however the Confederate version often used brass as steel was in short supply.
Technically known as a Griswold Gunnison.

I am very tempted to pick this up along with Colt SAA with 'dummy' cartridges. The Colt Navy is such a beautiful and iconic revolver. Until recently I thought these replicas were illegal in the UK. I'd love the chance to load and shoot a real cap and ball gun, getting dirty with the black powder, brilliant :-) As a massive fan of westerns I would just love to get my hands on one of these. Thanks for the informative review.

This gun was actually known as a Griswold and Gunnison it was the confederates answer to the 1851 navy.
And the Denix replicas are a lot lighter than the real live firing versions not heavier.

Thank you WildGaston everybody says its the 1851 colt navy or colt army 7 in barrel. But it's a griswold & Gunnison by Sam Griswold and Arvin Gunnison. The army of the famed General Sherman had his men burn the Griswold & Gunnison Revolver factory to the ground. So if you get a real griswold I would keep and never sell it because they are rare to find a real one.

They're not considered firearms because they're not firearms. They don't shoot anything. They're non-firing replicas. Just wood and aluminum. They're as much guns as a gun made from legos

I believe he is referring to the black powder versions. They are consider antique non-firearms, however they still fire since they are cap and ball. You can order them online and have them shipped directly to your home.

    • @KWatson1984

The law is a bit more complicated than that... to NOT be considered a firearm under Federal law the gun has to be of a design older than 1899 and not fire metallic cartridges. If you take a black powder gun and change the cylinder or otherwise convert it to use metallic cartridges it then becomes a firearm under the law and all the laws and limitations apply to it... In addition all 50 states plus territories, even different cities within those States and territories have different laws as to whether or not replica arms are firearms or not and whether they or any firearm or gun can be carried or even kept at home with or without a license.

Denix's poor casting quality is always what steered me away from them, and it's not just limited to the newer style guns either - Denix's 1896 Mauser C96 is inaccurate in almost every dimension and detail, the casting is again poor quality, the safety is molded as a part of the frame, and I've noticed that Denix has problems with accurately reproducing sight ramps on replica firearms, they just put a pin through it and let if flop around.

Again, actually closer to a Dragoon, round barrel, etc., except Dragoons were always .44 cal, Navys were always .36 cal.
But Samuel Colt himself said that the 1860 Army .44 with the streamlined barrel assembly was, "the most beautiful" of all models…he was very proud of it.

There's nothing wrong with Denix replicas. I've had a couple & seen literally hundreds of others. Yeah, some are better than others, some of the detail can be a little off & some of the moulding isn't neat, but they're meant to put on walls, used on stage or seen in the background on films & tv. For that they're fine.
The problem arises when people rough handle or just plain abuse them. They're die-cast, not steel & even "real" guns can't take the level of abuse a lot of people seem to think they can. Treat these as what they are - low density alloy castings & you'll be fine.
Denix are one of the biggest names in replicas in Europe. They didn't get that big by producing rubbish.

To clear things up this is NOT a replica of an 1851 navy at all. It is a replica of a griswold and gunnison revolver. The griswold and gunnison was one of the few guns that ever used a brass frame. There was only one 1851 navy. No "confederate" or "union" model. Any 1851 with a brass frame is not historically accurate. What you have is a non firing replica of a griswold and gunnison revolver which is similar to the navy, but not the same.

I'm not saying its all cheap and its certainly not easy or a pleasant process getting one, but I know people who've got lots of guns in the this country and they're not all posh twats by any means. The more of us have them and want them the easier it will be and the better.

It would be cool, but you know in some countries, it's impossible to get a gun as a civilian. I'm from Hungary and one of my ex-cop friend told me, I should stop dreaming about getting one of these guns here. If you're not a policeman or a hunter or something like that, you'll never get the papers you need. So all I can get is a replica as long as I live here. :(

András Horváth Actually there is a channel here on YT that I think is Hungarian, and he shoots muzzle loading revolvers and vintage replica's etc. I can't remember the name and obviously he might not be a normal civilian, I dunno. I suppose you could always try and get an illegal one.

Yeah there are a few hungarian shooting channels too, I know most of 'em. Well it would be very dangerous to get an "illegal" gun from across the sea. It's possible to get a gun from "mysterious hooded people" (:D) on the street I guess (as far as I know those guys sell modern guns mostly), but to order a special gun, like a clone of an old colt, is too much. I don't want the police to ring the bell one day, sayin: "Good morning sir! We brought your order. Could you please show us your papers?" Nah. It's too risky. So I think a replica will be enough for now. I'm thinking about a Colt SAA gas revolver. It's the closest I can get, some of them is able too shoot rubber slugs. Pretty good for self-defense, and legal to get and carry. Plus very nice, high quality replicas. Aaaand that's not a toy. Not a real one of course, but pretty far from a toy. Thanks for the tips anyway. ;)

Cool, we can get the shooting replicas in the UK but you have to jump through more hoops, the replica isn't considered a firearm but without a license most sellers won't take the risk of selling it.

Weaponsandstuff93 here in the States real antique black powder guns older than 1899 and even new functional replicas are not firearms under US Federal law, and do not require background checks, people who cannot own regular guns can sometimes own them... but each state is free to decide otherwise and there is a patchwork of laws across the country.

Brett Duffy that's messed up your state did that to you. Did you do something with it or just simple ownership without state permission? Can you appeal after a certain time?
