  • Everything you Need to Know about Organics Waste Recycling in California, Sacramento Specifically
Did you know 1/3 of all of our trash here in California is organic waste? We wanted to break down what the new CA Composting Law is & why we are so excited about it! Senate Bill 1383 passed in 2016 here in California and is getting implemented this year in 2022 throughout the state. In July, Sacramento residents 'Yard Waste' bin is now the 'Organics' bin and will be picked up weekly. In this video we also dive into topics like: What can I put in my organics waste bin? How often it's picked up?
We also compare composting to regular trash pick up and why it is so much better for the environment & combating climate change (spoiler, it has to do with methane emissions).

Our Liberty House is a gardening lifestyle channel. Lucas & Beth live in Zone 9b, Sacramento, CA, (with their dog, Liberty!) and garden in 6 raised beds in our backyard garden. Together, we garden year-round and share what we are growing and what we are learning along the way. Our gardening strategy is to create a garden full of diversity. We intermix vegetables, flowers, and herbs to create an ecosystem where beneficial insects thrive. We avoid all pesticides and instead plant things that will take care of pests for us. We compost and try to live a sustainable life where we can 'eat what we grow' from our backyard garden. Thanks for joining us on our journey!

I moved from SF to Sacramento about 6 years ago. We were already composting in SF . Now that I'm a gardener I compost my own. We try to return the nutrients to my crops. We just received our bin. 10 bucks additional on the waste bill.

The word impose means to FORCE.

@@cynsationalcontainergarden4911 It is being forced/imposed though.. it's a law. You don't have a choice. We don't all live on farms or have gardens. Or even time to garden and ol' McDonald it up in our spare time. My back yard is a slab of concrete, I'm busy six days a week. This isn't a choice. It's just another thing I gotta do and another CA tax.

@@hadesobsidian5231 You missed my point. I'm STILL forced to pay REGARDLESS. I'm not in agreement with this at all. But we continue
to roll with whatever we're told to do or pay without question. I think the waste management folks should give customers a CREDIT for 10 bucks per month if they participate. They are going to produce compost with what they collect.

While I have always put my kitchen vegetable and fruit scraps into my compost bin, I am looking forward to putting other types of green waste into the county's container.

Same for us! We usually avoided putting seasoned or salted foods in our compost but now it can at least be composted by the county

Paper plates often have shiny plastic coating and should not be composed. Also not all food scrap is compostable such as diary, meat, foods cooked in oil/ grease

I find it interesting that composting is required but what is frightening is that people in general are ignorant about what is proper to compost or will take proper care with their sorting and a lot of micro plastics and tainted materials, including forever herbicides are going to end up in that compost.

That is true, and why we created this video in hopes of educating. But I believe the purpose of this law is to simply reduce the amount of carbon emissions that are emitted by organic waste breakdown in the landfill. By diverting this to a facility that uses aerobic means to break down organic waste, we reduce carbon emissions. I haven’t seen anything, at least for us, on using the compost created for anything food related. I believe it is mostly being used for soil erosion at the government level and not being handed out for gardening nor food production.
Hopefully as this requirement ages and society gets use to it so does the education behind what to divert. For now I think it’s a good first step in the right direction.

    Compost heaps also creat methane

    • @Rendercolorfulgoop

Does not come weekly, it’s biweekly (every two weeks) and it’s smells because it’s summer and a heat wave

    • @OurLibertyHouse
      @OurLibertyHouse  2 роки тому +1

If you have Sacramento County Waste it does get picked up weekly. They changed the biweekly (every two weeks) pick up to weekly to accommodate the new system. Also, composting is an aerobic process which produces little to no methane. Methane from landfills is a byproduct of anaerobic (without oxygen) breakdown

@@OurLibertyHouse if you are correct and I was maybe missed, so was the rest of my block smells like road kill because of one mistake- fantastic. Yes I read the bill, and recognize that the main factor of black carbon is and will always be fuel emissions. This is a way to make another profit revenue for the state and big agg and makes my neighborhood stink, literally. Do something about industrial and stop punching down. Not everyone has a way to compost like this. You’re in east sac tho what the hell do you know

I’m sorry. Let me propose a different solution- perhaps expand and work on the recycling program we have now that not only keeps plastic waste out of the dumb that causes the increase of methane, but also helps the poor and the homeless get out of poverty. Or maybe having a law that prevents groceries from locking their dumpsters, y’all rather put it in another truck to be sent somewhere else. No one considered that because they’ve convinced themselves this is the way because they’re in east sac or San Fran or some out of touch pocket of California.

I just hope that the compost that will be made from organic waste is better than what is being sold at Home Depot. After three years, I'm still finding pieces of plastic and glass in and on top of the soil.

Oh no! That’s not good for commercially sold compost. My experience with municipal or county compost is usually hit or miss and often needs to be screened. But free is free
