In 1984, there was a film called "Teachers", starring Nick Nolte. 38 Special did the title song ("Teacher, Teacher"). You guys are teachers, so... I think you see where I'm going. :) "Back Where You Belong" is also a banger, as is "Somebody Like You".

Well, Don sang lead on most of their big hits, but Donnie sang on a lot of the lesser known ones. But Donnie was the lead singer on 2 of my favorites, Chain Lightnin' and Rockin' into the Night. What was cool is Donnie was known as the lead singer, but they had been friends for years, and Donnie insisted and encouraged Barnes to take the lead on several songs. That's what I've always liked about them, no egos

My fave song by them. Such a driving beat and "imperative" feeling to the chords and vocals. Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant took turns singing lead but Barnes sang lead on most of their big hits up until 1987 when he tried going solo. During that period they brought on Max Carl on keyboard and he sang lead on some big hits. Then Max left and Barnes rejoined in 1992, once again sharing leads with Van Zant. All three lead singers have great voices, with their own strengths and styles. While Barnes was solo he recorded an album that got caught up in legal issues and wasn't actually released until 2017. Currently, Barnes is the only original member still performing in the group.

My personal favorite song by them is "Like No Other Night," which came out of the album after this one. The video is a fun contrast compared to this one as the studio marketing department got a hold of them, dressed them up a bit, changed their hair, etc. The new look fit in much better with the 80's MTV scene. I know I saw that video on MTV a lot more than I did any of their others.

The guitar player on the right wearing the hat @ 1:22 is John Roy Van Zant, also known as Johnny Van Zant, and is the current lead vocalist of Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. He is the younger brother of Lynyrd Skynyrd co-founder and former lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, and of the 38 Special founder Donnie Van Zant. He became lead vocalist and chief songwriter for the reunited Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1987 and continues to record and perform with them starting 10 years after the plane crash where brother Ronnie and other band members were tragically killed in October 20, 1977. Bandmates Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines, along with assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary, and co-pilot William Gray, were also killed. The rest of the band were seriously injured. Ronnie Van Zant was 29 years old. Johnny is carrying on a family tradition. You might want to give Johnny's video Red white and Blue a visit.

This song has Don Barnes singing lead. He sings lead on most of their hit songs. Donnie Van Zant is the one with the blond hair and the hat in the video. On the album "Tour De Force", Donny did lead vocals on "One Time For Old TImes", "Twentieth Century Fox", both of which were radio hits. Pretty much all of the rest of the singles and radio hits were sung by Don Barnes until the 1988 "Rock and Roll Strategy" album, when Barnes temporarily left the band. Van Zant took over lead vocal duties along with newcomer Max Carl (who sang lead on "Second Chance"). Van Zant left the band in 2013. Barnes rejoined the band in 1992 and remains with the band.

Btw there's a group called Van Zant featuring Donnie and Johnny( who lead sang for Lynard Skynard when they reformed in 1988) Van Zant. It's more country oriented, but it's good.

Great choice tonight Jay and Amber. My favorite by 38 Special has always been "Fantasy Girl," with this one a close second.

A lot of people don't know that Jim Peterik of Survivor wrote/co-wrote a lot of .38 Special's hits and it all started when Ronnie Van Zant told Peterik that he felt Donnie's band had paid thier dues long enough and needed that one song jolt to give their break. When they first got together to jam out and collaborate, somebody in 38 Special played Peterik a riff and told him that all had for lyrics was "hold on loosely" and Peterik instantly replied, "yeah, but don't let go". Eyebrows were raised. Pencils started scribbling and 20 minutes later, that song was done and spirits were high. 38 Special had something special, alright ...

It was kinda weird Donnie VanZant was the singer, but Donnie Barnes, a guitar palyer, sang their biggest hits
Don is the lone original still in the band.

.38 special had that great combo of gorgeous southern rock guitars and super-catchy pop melodies and hooks. this completes their trifecta of classic hits with "hold on loosely" and "caught up in you".
fun fact: the model/actress that stars in this video is the 1st mrs. bruce springsteen, julianne phillips.

Oh my where to begin. They have so many fabulous songs it's really hard to pick a favorite. This one is super great but so is second chance and my number one would have to be rocking into the night.

This has always been my fav 38 Special song!!! One of my go to bands as an 80s teenager on a Saturday night...cruisin thru town with my friends in my '65 Mustang. My best friend had a Firebird...and us two gals used to tear it up on the weekends blasting our music. Most other girls loved the dressing up...shopping and such....not us....we were happy in our tight jeans...T-shirts....muscle cars and rockin' music. (We also got more attention from the guys that way....LOL!!!)

This is Don Barnes singing lead here. All the members play instruments…this iteration of the band had three guitarists, a bassist and TWO drummers. Easy way to tell Barnes and Van Zant apart is Donnie V loves his hat.
Incidentally Barnes sang lead on just about every single the band released after 1979. You’ll rarely if ever hear VZ doing lead vocals.

Johnny and Donnie put out a country album as a duo back in 2005. The album, "Van Zandt - Get Right with the Man," has some good songs. Get Right with the Man being one of them along with Ain't Nobody Gonna Tell Me What To Do. There are more but I think those were the two biggest tracks. Definitely worth a listen.

A classic song from 38 Special. Don't let the video fool you. Don Barnes is the lead singer here like on most of their radio hits. Always had a great melodic voice. He also played guitar but Jeff Carlisi was their lead guitarist. Cool bonus note about the video: the woman in the video is Julianne Phillips, who later married Bruce Springsteen.
