You mentioned 38 Special being one of your favorite Southern Rock bands, alongside Lynyrd Skynyrd. There's a very good reason for that! Lead vocalist, Donnie Van Zant, founded 38 Special. He was the brother of Lynyrd Skynyrd's lead vocalist, Ronnie Van Zant, that founded Lynyrd Skynyrd. After Skynyrd's plane crash that killed Ronnie Van Zant, Johnny Van Zant, also their brother, became Lynyrd Skynyrd's lead vocalist. That's right, Donnie, Ronnie, and Johnny Van Zant were all the lead vocalists for two of the most awesome Southern Rock bands ever!

In addition, one other band came from the tragedy of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Four members formed the Rossington Collins band who recruited their singer from 38 Special.

How can you not love 38 Special? This was actually their debut single, which put them on the musical map in 1980. They had so many great hits in the 80s, and I hope (eventually) you hit all of them! "Caught Up in You" should be next, followed by "If I'd Been the One", "Back Where You Belong", "Teacher, Teacher", and "Like No Other Night". But knowing y'all, I'm sure you'll be doing "Teacher, Teacher" next...😃😃 Bit o' trivia - this song was actually written by three members of Survivor ("Burning Heart"), but the producers thought it wasn't a good fit for Survivor's album, so he gave it to 38 Special's manager, and it became their first hit!

While the producer did think the song was too "southern rock" for Survivor. It was actually John Kalodner, the man who signed Survivor, who gave the demo of the song to .38 Special's manager. The original Survivor version featured Jim Peterik and Dave Bickler singing the song together. It sounds like Don and Donnie sing the song together on this version. Anyhow, because .38 Special had a minor hit with this song, Jim Peterik was asked to co-write songs with them. It resulted in long-term friendships and the songs "Hold On Loosely", "Caught Up In You", "Chain Lightnin'", etc. Jim Peterik still collaborates with Don Barnes and .38 Special today. Peterik also said in a podcast interview that his favorite songwriting collaboration over the years was with Don Barnes and Jeff Carlisi. Don Barnes sings the song "Last Dream Home" on Jim Peterik's upcoming World Stage album (Jan 12, 2024). The song "Winds of Change was a Jim Peterik, Don Barnes, and Danny Chauncey co-write with the three of them singing the song together. "Fade to Blue" and "Changed by Love" are on the first World Stage album sung by Peterik and Don Barnes. And the song "To Miss Somebody" was co-written by Jim Peterik and Don Barnes and is sung by Peterik and Dennis DeYoung. It's Survivor meets .38 Special meets Dennis DeYoung in sound.

Amber I'm so proud of you and your recent development of an ear for the drums or drummer, aka percussionist.... It's actually a pretty rare thing , that someone develops a proper ear for such things... The drummer of a band is so often overlooked, unsung, or overshadowed... They set the tempo, rhythm and beat. Of most music... They bracket, frame and draw the lines of a song..the so often backbone, and beating heart of a great band. they essentially set the parameters. the rest of the band fill in the shades and colors..... 38 Special... Yet another Great Southern rock band..... Playing great road music. BLACKFOOT... Plays some great road music as well...

.38 Special's lead guitarist is the EVH of southern rock, Jeff Carlisi. He complimented Don Barnes (co-founder and co-lead guitarist) perfectly. Also, they were one of the first 'alternative' bands, lol, having two drummers instead of one. The irony of lead singer Donnie Van Zant jumping and running all over the stage (the self-proclaimed "hardest working man in Rock"), yet brother Ronnie Van Zant, Lynyrd Skynyrd's singer, would just stand still like a statue when he was onstage. And don't forget about little brother Johnny Van Zant, a hard rockin' sumbitch in his own right with the Johnny Van Zant Band.

Known as those "Wild-Eyes Southern Boys" (One of their albums), 38 Special was great, with a lot of really good songs!
Here's an excerpt of information about one of its notable members!
Donald (Donnie) Newton Van Zant (born June 11, 1952) is an American rock singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He is best known for being a member of the band 38 Special, from its formation in 1974 until 2013. He is the middle of three sons; his older brother Ronnie was the original lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd who died in a 1977 plane crash in Mississippi, and his younger brother Johnny has been the lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd since 1987. Donnie and Johnny Van Zant also perform together as the group Van Zant.

Great band. I saw them live way back in 1982 in London, England. They were the opening act for Foreigner. The Brits loved them and called them back for an encore, which normally didn't happen for an opening act back then.

Let me tell you a little known fact. When they were unknown, and playing dives, they were taking their stage equipment out the back door and the cops pulled up. And, (you guessed it) they were looking down the barrel of a 38 special. They changed their name. And became famous. Peace, fellow Okies and Import(lol). Peace...

Nope it was at their reversal place and they locked themselves out of the building. They had to break into their own place to practice. Police were called. They told the guys to come out or "these 38 Specials will do the talking for us"

Donnie Van Zant (brother of Ronnie Van Zant-Lynryd Skynyrd) is lead singer. When I first saw them, two of Lynryd Skynyrd’s band mates were in the band!

I had the exact same reaction when this band debuted... me and my band got to meet them in Concord CA about a month after this came out... got to jam with Jeff Carlisi and Larry Junstrom (R.I.P.) at a Peavey Amplifier Promotion... Larry was one of the founding members of Lynyrd Skynyrd... So glad you love their music like I do, thumbs up, more please....
