I have a small cordless screwdriver with a clutch on the driver front end. I use that all the time

Great to see you posting again! Time for confession - I told Rick to try heat on that shaft so I take at least part responsibility for the button problem. Looking at the schematic it seems to be a fairly simple reel. It’s a far cry from a Daiwa EmblemX 6000T pit/carp spinning reel I worked on today. Still from talking to you I think you had far more problems with this Zebco. LOL I want to know how many hours you worked on this reel. Also, I use two different electric drills because my arthritis is awful now. Less pain is more important to me than most reels. I had to push bushings out on one of the reels you sent me. How is this a helical gear? I’ve never truly understood what a helical gear actually does even though I have a few spinning reels that have them and must be reassembled very carefully for them to work correctly. Boy you roasted that spring - I said use heat not an acetylene torch! You should use a small brush when greasing gears you’ve already installed ten yhe reel. I think it would work better, be more precise, not get grease in other places where you might not want grease. Great job on the spring and button! You were lucky you didn’t file down those notches on that center shaft. You probably would never do that but it is just the kind of goof I would make! I was going to ask you if you’d need to glue that o-ring. Man. That was a nice fix! This was an outstanding job resurrecting this reel and a very entertaining video especially given the lengthy discussion we had while you were working on it off camera a! - Chris

I believe a "helical gear" is any gear where the teeth are angled relative to the axis of rotation, like a very coarse screw. Helical gears are supposed to make the gear train smoother and quieter by increasing the duration of contact between a tooth on one gear and its counterpart on another. I suspect the increased contact reduces play between the teeth, produces a more uniform rotational speed, and limits the slap of one tooth against another as they make initial contact.

Chris, It's good to be back. I hope they are able to retrieve my data from the damaged hard drive. I am feeling better too. It's been an eventful 2 months. I was looking at the schematic after I posted the video and I realized that it must be from a later model of the Zebco Bullet .38. The drag setup is very different from the reel we worked on. You are correct, this reel had numerous issues that I had to resolve to get it going again. In truth, it wasn't really worth the effort I put into it but I wanted to do an early bullet video. This was the first one I got my hands on. All told, I guess I have about 4 hours invested in this $5 reel, plus the time I spent on the video.
Warped did an excellent job of explaining the helical gear so I don't think I need to expand on that. I'd love to tell you that was the first spring I have ruined with my mini torch but that would be a lie. I think I've destroyed 3 of them so far. I get so excited about getting things unstuck that I forget about the local springs until I see them glowing red. By then it's too late. I wish I had showed in the video that the button did not return all the way, even after winding the handle with the old spring. I just forgot to do it.
I've tried using smaller brushes and I'm never satisfied with the amount of grease I put on the gear. I've seen a lot of these guys putting on the thinnest coating of grease on the gears. So thin that you can't even see it. With the number of new reels that I've taken apart direct from the factory, I've determined that I'm using approximately the same amount of grease as they did. That's a level that I can live with.
Sanding and filing on that center post was something I had to do very carefully. One small bit at a time. Yes, the O ring was glued in place, but I don't think that was necessary. I believe it would have stayed in place on its own.

@@warpedweirdoThank you so much for this very good explanation. I have a number of spinning reels in my collection that have helical gears most of which are Olympic models. I think I’ve only fished with one of them. Honestly I could not tell sny difference in how the reel felt while using it but I’m not sure a helical gear is necessarily one that you can feel. My concept of a helical gear was totally wrong so again thanks so much for the explanation. - Chris

@@youngmartinsreels5314 Rick, I didn't realize there were differences in the bullet 38. I'll have to look around and see if I can find one like your reel to put in my files. Sorry about that.

Where or how is it you donate reels to the Kids?

Parents can drop by my house with just a phone call, and I give any kid that needs one a free rod and reel. I donated about 50 of them to a local organization this year called FinAddict Angler Foundation. They use them to teach kids how to fish. I also gave out 15 combos on Halloween Night to tricker treaters. A woman I met at Walmart last week was supposed to stop by and pick up three combos for her nephews. She hasn't come by yet, but I hope she will. I'm down to about 15 combos right now but I'm always looking to get more ready. I might paint this Bullet reel to make it more attractive.
