I think another major theme I have latched onto is loss. Kat loses everything multiple times. She loses her identity as Queen Alua, she loses her role in society in 1 after the timeskip, she gets frozen for trying to help save the city, she loses memory of the children she tried so hard to save, she loses Hekseville, Raven, and her powers at the start if 2, Syd presumably dies, she loses all her friends in Jirga Para Lhao and goes back to Hekseville (where she has once again lost her role as beloved guardian). She loses her weak semblance of community and trust when Brahman goes all psycho, she watches Kali lose everything (her sister, her father, her mind), she briefly loses herself under the influence of the Etoans, she loses the ignorance she had of her horrible story as Queen Alua (where she lost her only true confidant to murder), her friends are all gravely injured in the fight against Elecktricitie, she loses all of her power against the Destructive Force, and she even gives up her life in order to save everyone. And yet she still gets the fuck up and fights. This bitch COMES BACK AFTER SEALING HERSELF IN A BLACK HOLE!!?!?? She still manages to be positive and find the good in others, she still risks everything to be good and try her best. She fights so hard for people that have all but forgotten her, and risks her own life to save the world because she loves it that much. She defeats the literal manifestation of the DESTRUCTION OF EVERYTHING through sheer willpower and determination and if that isn’t inspiring, I don’t know what is. If anyone ever says any protagonist is better than Kat, they are wrong.
The first one is legit... One of my all time faves .. of all time. Lol. Such a nice cozy game. I finished it all in 10 hours. I still remember it fondly.
I think you may have misunderstood Raven's origin. To be fair, the game is never explicit as to how or why her and Kat got "forced to be two", but I always thought that the implication was that they were meant to be born as one being, but they were instead born as two different people. This would explain a couple things: -How Sachya was able to awaken to Xii after returning to Hekseville (She awakened to him as a child, not as an adult). -Why Alua was not able to awaken to her guardian, even as a teen. We are told that most Eto royalty awaken their guardians at a really young age. Kai is not older than 12 and he already has his. The reason why Alua did not have her guardian might have been because she wasn’t "complete". -Who The Other is. The Other is a character that appears in the dream sequence after you get your ass kicked by Durga and Kali. She looks almost identical to Kat, but with Raven's color scheme and both of them face her at the same time to unlock Panther/Phoenix Mode. I think the implication is that she is who Alua would have been, had she been born "complete". This would also explain why Alua looks exactly like Kat, but nothing like Raven. -Why Raven doesn't remember being Alua. If she was as much a part of Alua as Kat was, there should probably be a part of the game where she recovers those memories, but the only memories she ever recovers are from being Sachya. All that aside, you're doing God's work here. More people should talk about this wonderful game. How Sony treats this franchise should be considered a crime. The theme of time across the three cities is something that I hadn't picked up on and this video made me appreciate this game I love so much even more.
Let’s pray that we’ll get in the future a Gravity Rush 3. From original team. Which will end Kat’s story with happy ending, that she deserves. And potential remaster will have collaboration with Stellar Blade and Eve’s costume for Kat. :)
Gravity Rush is such a Gem of a series and I will never forgive Sony for mistreating as much as it has been. If that remaster ever come out and IT BETTER! I hope it’ll get the proper love is deserves There’s a big Gravity Rush 3 shaped hole in my heart and I hope it’ll get filled on day
I did play gravity rush 2. I preordered it and bought the first one twice, original and remastered, and it was the reason i bought a vita. I also watched the couple episode anime studio trigger did as a promo
Gravity Rush is a series that's _always_ looked cool to me and it just makes me WISH it was on PC... Or _anything_ that wasn't a Sony console, really. Console-hostage titles always make me sad, especially when it's on newer systems (7th gen and beyond) that aren't as easily emulated and where they could've EASILY had a split release on PC too. And now that Japan Studios and so many other internals at Sony are dead it's hard to tell if all these cool, unique franchises even have a CHANCE of making it to other platforms anymore the way the more "western" output has been doing.
Thank you for putting in words how underrated this game was and how it stuck to players over the years. if only Japan Studio was still alive it could've released as a port to Switch to bring in a new audience :') I inhale the GR osts for breakfast and I swear it took so long for them to release it publicly spotify until i noticed late last year. Here's to hoping how the movie will hold up...
God this video was fucking fantastic, left me In near tears. Maybe I should check out these games and this is the kind of video that makes me want to CREATE. So a great way to begin the weekend. Pretty Wizard Wayne 💙
I don't know if you read comments but your genuine passion for gaming and finding gems like this in a sea of plastic is refreshing! People like you are why Im trying my hand at making videos too! Excellent video!
I'll never forget playing the demo of the first GR on one of those Walmart kiosks. The game blew my mind and is what made me get a Vita. I platinumed the first game and loved every minute of it. When the second game came out it blew my mind again. Beautiful graphics with a large open world with 0 load times? An amazing story and characters? GOD TIER MUSIC AND ACTION!? I couldn't stop playing until I had done everything. These games mean so much to me and I really wish more people would talk about them, heck even Sony has abandoned this amazing series after shutting down it's studio.
GR1 was the reason i bought a vita and GR2 was the reason I got a PS4. I even bought remastered. This game made some questionable decisions but I despite them I love this game. I also really enjoy the side quests. The characters are one of the games strengths and those lean onto them. It really is a charming game. I really wish this series took off.
I did play Gravity Rush. The original release on the vita. Which was also my first Vita game as well. Then the remaster of 1 and I preordered 2. Unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to play it much at the time. By the time I actually had a chance to sit and play 2 the server had already shut down so I never had the chance to get the dusty token rewards. Still that I didn’t let that keep me from enjoying the heck out of the game. Thank you for such a well done review of one of my favorite games.
i have never wanted to play this game more. i played the first game back in january and i fell in love with it quick. unfortunately i don't have a ps4, ps5 or even a high-end pc if the rumors are true but after this video, i am definitely playing this game at one point in my life.
I will forever love this series. Its one the best in my opinion because of how movithe story is and its characters. Not to mention the music and aesthetic, its literally what gives me chills and brings me to tears everytime. I just hope Sony/PlayStation can eventually put for the time to make at least ONE more GR game just to completely round out the world. Some may argue the story ended after the second but i think there can at least be one more that will add more character to Raven and Kat, maybe even add a couple new characters that can have their own character development. I just need this series to be recognized and loved more because no one really does tbh
I don't know if someone else mentioned this, but Yunica's partner was a normal soldier back in GR1. She might have just been in the military uniform DLC/story chapter.
If anyone didn't hear the news yet, we're getting a Gravity Rush Movie. They heard our pleads. Not only that, but Keiichiro Toyama has stated in an interview they he wants to bring the Gravity Rush games to PC. And make a 3rd game for the franchise. Look it up, and you'll see what I'm talking about.
Glad to say I’ve already played both games and love them. The community is tiny but very passionate, a fanzine was made a couple years ago that had some fantastic fanart. Really sucks that Sony didn’t support the series strongly. Really enjoyed the video too, very detailed with good presentation. The way you described the the finale and went over the themes make me want to go back and play it for a third time. Although I might hold off if the rumor about a port turns out to be true, here's hoping.
This is one of the best videos on a video game that I've seen in a long time. Gravity Rush has always looked like a beautiful series to me... And I always just ended up glossing over it. Not out of lack of interest, just... Never finding the right moment. Whenever I thought about it, I just never had the time or the money to spare. And then it just slipped out of my mind... Of course, the lack of a wishlist feature on PSN (unless I've just never managed to find it, which is just as bad) is a big part of that. Speaking to the various industry ills, it feels like it encourages only focusing on the big shiny new things. That the games are all interchangeable, and there's no reason you'd possibly want to go back and buy something you didn't get around to before, when you could instead buy something NEW. It's frustrating, and I'm sure these games aren't the only titles I've never gotten to because Sony makes it harder to keep track of the games I want.
He explains the title in the video, it's more that you should have been given more of a chance to play it at the time when the industry cared about the game.
I dont actually remember how i doscovered this game but it was when it originally released for the vita, i was a kid and i wasnt going to ask for a new system just for a game so i watched the whole game through gameplays, i fell in love with it so im glad i was able to buy the sequel on ps4
The untimely death of online services made my first playthrough (literally a month after it ended) a sad experience, since certain cosmetics are locked behind online. If and/or when a re-release comes out, I am pre-ordering it this time. Also, this was a really well written review. I could not agree nor disagree more with your points.
I played Part 1 back in the day on the PS Vita. It was the only game I really liked on the system. A couple of years later I realized it existed on PS4 and that there was a part 2! Ofc I played both and I'm quite disappointed that the chances for a part 3 are so low. Especially on the PS5 it would be possible to make Kat fall faster due to the faster loading times.
(Sigh) looking back at it, 2017 had a lot of good games come out. Yakuza 0, Nier Automata, persona 5 and Gravity Rush 2. These games came out and breathed new life into their respective franchises. Well, all except…Gravity Rush 😢. That year kinda reminded of the ps2 era where even the bigger companies weren’t afraid to get a little weird
You can play the first one on a vita emulator (It runs surprisingly well, even in my toaster of a laptop) and, if we are lucky, we may get a PC port/remaster for the sequel.
I mean, they are about to re-release it for ps5 and pc so we all have another chance. That said, i played the first one on vita and didnt enjoyed it much.
I've recommended this game to one of my friends. And i tried having him play it. The only reason he won't play Gravity Rush is, for the fact he is one of those guys who think playing as females in games is sexist. And he thinks that it downdegrages his masculinity as a guy. And he wants to say of course they are gonna make the females more overpowered then the guy male characters in games. Same with his choices in anime. If there is no guy in it, or the guy isn't the main character, he will skip the anime, and not watch it. He claims he cannot relate to females in games and shows, only guy characters he claims he can relate to, cause he's a guy he tells me. And that if any guys plays as a female in any game means the guy is being a sexual pervert. Keep in mind he does like woman in real life. I've tried to tell my friend how he is wrong. And being sexist on his one sided and biased way of thinking. This is why one of my friends will not play NieR Automata. Because you start the game playing as the female character 2B. And you can't play as the guy character 9S until you beat 2B's storyline. So this one friend skips on games like these that he would enjoy if he got over the fact you have to play as females in these games. I never understood any guys who won't play a game, or watch a show where the main character is a female. I love playing as females in games. And shows where females girls and woman are the main characters. I do not think playing games or watching shows where the main character is a girl downdegrages a guys masculinity as a man. So i cannot agree with this friends point of view, and way of thinking on this.

If anyone ever says any protagonist is better than Kat, they are wrong.
The final boss is pretty much:
"the indifferent cruelty of the universe when the indomitable human spirit walks into the room"
One of the best sequels I've ever played and have no idea how it didn't become more popular.
The first one is legit... One of my all time faves .. of all time. Lol. Such a nice cozy game. I finished it all in 10 hours. I still remember it fondly.

Yeah I think I got co fused about the details with Raven and what exactly happened with her origins so this interpretation is appreciated lol

You mentioned Destiny of Spirits! I actually really loved that game! Loved Gravity Rush 1 & 2 as well - well worth it
mad respect for making this video, getting all that footage must've took ages. but in the end it was sooooo worth it
Thanks! I actually recorded the footage twice, once three years ago when I originally intended to make the video lol
I did play gravity rush 2. I preordered it and bought the first one twice, original and remastered, and it was the reason i bought a vita. I also watched the couple episode anime studio trigger did as a promo
the music from gravity rush goes so hard
I loved this series, I sometimes wish it was split into a trilogy so we could get even more content.

Thanks so much! I was hoping that moment would land
Damn, Ive really missed that intro. Good to see him back! :)

holy shit, i should've played gravity rush 2
When we get in digimon world three
Please do The Last Guardian
Yeah, I should have.
i was just thinking of this game but i couldnt remember the name for the life of me
