- Breaking Bad's pilot is one of my favorite episodes of television. Actually, it's whole first season is phenomenal. In this video, I want to talk about what aspiring storytellers and writers can learn from that first episode in particular. I hope you enjoy the video.

No, you can see Walt pull the trigger on the gun, the safety was most definitely off. What happened was that he forgot to rack the slide to put a round in the chamber.
Thanks for the clarification. I know nothing about guns. Honestly didn't even think of that haha
@@armaansandhu3676 You just said we see him turn the safety off, then say "he was able to pull trigger "with the safety on"". What?
@@Edax_Royeaux he was probably pretending or something idk
@@Lowart That's actually not quite it. The firearm he's using is a double-action/single-action semi automatic; I won't go into all the details of how it functions (unless you're curious) but on these kinds of firearms one is able to fully pull the trigger while the safety is on and there is a round in the chamber - it just won't discharge (if you're familiar with Call of Duty, the Beretta M9 is a good example). Great video by the way - love Breaking Bad :)
This show is, and always will be, my favorite tv series
Avatar is mine.
Noa Zitu downton abbey
Weirdly I like Better Call Saul more. I found Breaking Bad to be at it's best when it wasn't all about Walt, since I found the Gus era to be the most interesting. Looking back, Walt doesn't get much done for himself apart from drink that revenge coke from the carwash.
Sopranos is about the only show I think is better
Best show is The Sopranos
I’m currently 12 episodes into Better Call Saul after watching all of Breaking Bad for the first time in full. I get why it’s so brilliant. I loved it
Scott Sandler I’m totally jealous that you get to watch Better Call Saul the first time. It’s beyond excellent.
Wish I could watch BCS for the first time again :'/
I’ll admit though, I ended up watching season 5 as it aired, before I could finish season 4 on Netflix…
Breaking bad is a 10.1/10 and BCS is a 10/10
Breaking bad is so good that when I watched it for the second time, it felt like a different, yet similar thing, because of how many layers it has, but it was all brilliant
As good as the storytelling and telling locations and camera angles are in this show, Better Call Saul does even better at it. The cinematography techniques are stellar in both shows.
Just saw El Camino and man, I would never have expected anything that good after such a long time. This video just made me so nostalgic
I just got done watching Breaking Bad's first episode last night. I can say I now see why people like this show from the ground up.
Me: Are you going to stop everything you are doing to watch a video of Lowart on Breaking Bad??
Also me preparing a reference comment: YOU ARE GODDAMNED RIGHT.
First episode was perfect way to start the series, but the episode that hooked me to the show is "and the bags in the river" - i will never forget the experience of first seeing the missing plate piece scene.
How fitting, I just rewatched the first episode two days ago.
I was in awe at how managed to grip me, despite me already knowing the plot.
I watched this show last year. It really was a blast!
The only live-action TV show I like and actually finished. Gotta rewatch soon!!
Watch the sopranos, the leftovers, Fargo, and Hannibal for prime choice tv shows.
Check out Mad Men, the other big AMC show that aired alongside Breaking Bad

Yea, i know. I tried ep1 a year ago and it didn't grab me. I'm VERY picky when it comes to TV shows.
Gonna try again someday tho.
Thanks for making this video. Breaking Bad is possibly my favorite television show ever. I rewatch the series about once a year and I can say it starts amazingly and ends even better. Thanks for making this and keep up the good work
What an excellent review. I'm rewatching the show and it's simply sublime.
another great video man people have been telling me to watch this for years and no one could come up with an good argument to convince me but watching this I now know that I should so thanks for this
Awesome! I hope you enjoy it :)
The ironic thing is that I recently finished re-watching the series with my girlfriend. Then a couple days later this video comes out. Small world we live in ain’t it
i wish someday i reach that level of success in life. breaking bad + girlfriend... wow
@Mr Temporal “a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result.” When I rewatch something on Netflix because my gf hasn’t seen it, I’m not expecting a video essay that talks about the first episode of said show to come out at all, and it was indeed an amusing result to say the least. I think it fits the definition to a tee lol.
Outside maybe the deliberately part, I’ll give you that one, unintentional irony I’ll call it, amusing all the same though
@Mr Temporal fair enough I’ll concede to that
How does this only have 13k views? This is amazing!!
Great stuff as always!
I find these videos so interesting. My favorite is your series on Fullmetal Alchemist. You break down the characters phenomenally and you do it in such a way that seems like you are teaching how to write stories. I say all that to say two things. One, keep up the amazing work. Two, do you write and if so how do you go about story planning?
It's funny how every meth distributor they get is a villain
Well they always found a way to piss them off or get themselves in trouble
I don’t know if there’s many meth distributors who are stand up guys
@@JellyMelodies lmao this reply is killing me. It's true.
Just came back to this episode after watching all 6 seasons of Better Call Saul (plus Breaking Bad years ago) and am blown away with how much ground work this pilot sets up. The amount of detail in the entire Breaking Bad universe is wild. Probably going to start watching this whole series again from here
Damn, now I want to watch this again. I guess it's been a while.
Hey Lowart, I was wondering if you could do a Danny Phantom review series just you did with Teen Titans? Because that would be so so so cool. Danny Phantom is show that's very near and dear to my heart, so it would be really nice and cool to see you do a review series of it.
I remember watching the 1st episode years ago, my jaw on the floor the entire way through it at how good it is. It felt like a really well-contained movie and I didn't need to watch anymore, it was THAT good. But I've to, I really do.
The final season is so hard to get through.
Poor Jessie 🥺
Yeah Jesse I'm glad he has a happy ending now hoping for Jimmy/Saul/Gene has a happy ending for his story next year.
Great video about a great show
Thanks, man! Happy you enjoyed it
Damn it 3 years later and I'm still rewatching breaking bad and forcing all my friends to watch it as well
7:18 his reflection looks like him without his hair. Neat.
*why does this great video essay only have 5k views*
Follow up video on Better call Saul would be awesome
I couldn’t agree with this video more.
Breaking Bad is my favorite tv show. The pilot immediately got me interested. Plus I started watching the show during that weird time where AMC was having that “who’s better” battle between Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead. I started out with The Walking Dead which at first I thought was great. After a while though it kinda dragged on. But when I started watching Breaking Bad I felt like every episode was important and entertaining (maybe not that fly episode but I didn’t have a problem with it like many others did)
Understanding problems, situations and people, a siligism is what breaking bad teaches in its synopsis. I think Walter White stood for in the end for the wrongs he wrote right in Felina. A man exists to define himself, as such.
Breaking Bad is modern literature.
I'd recommend doing a vid on Better Call Saul - I feel like it's kinda slept on since it lives in breaking bad's shadow as far as most people are concerned
I haven't seen it yet, but I'm planning to watch it soon. If I find I have something to say about it, I'd definitely be interested in making a vid on it
@@Lowart trust me there is A LOT to say about Better Call Saul.
Hey lowart had everything been alright you haven't released a video in a while
No one ever talks abt it but this show has so many either unintentional or intentional humorous aspects
do more pls
Finally an analysis video by someone who actually knows what hes talking about
Vince Gilligan and Christopher Nolan needs to work together
Yeah even Zack Snyder and Todd Phillips as well.
When will you do avatar season 2
Best tv show of all time
Are you till gonna do your FMA series? I thought I heard you mention you were going to talk some about Lyra. I've heard almost nobody else even mention her name!
BTW here is my FmA 03 fanfic far from finished: This fanfic is my followup to the 03 anime, it's far from done, but please read it!: archiveofourown.org/works/17790377/chapters/41973587
Not much shows can make you think about the piolt a lot
so does anyone know what's happening with FMA?
Working on it! Next FMA video is a big one.
Why my first episode was different
forgot how good this show was
After seeing the first episode of Breaking Bad, my family nicknamed Walter White and by extension the entire series "Slipman" XD
The best tv series of all time
You're Goddamn right
I made a TV Pilot inspired by this👇

Nice
Walt became heisenburg because he was never happy with his life
Yah yeet first
Really? The pilot is one I struggle to watch. I almost gave up on the show.
The show starts with a bang
I do like Breaking Bad... but probably not as much as most people... :P
The overall pacing was too slow, especially for binge-watching. A lot of the scenes could've been shortened. In fact, I think the show could've benefited from 22-minute episodes. And I do understand that the show was trying to create this contrast between crime-related scenes and boring, daily life-related scenes but it doesn't change the fact the latter are still just that. I, a regular-ass dude with a regular-ass life who watches escapism shows and reads escapism stories, already understand that contrast. So let's just focus on what I and Walter are here for, m'kay?
I also didn't like how the first three seasons ended on cliffhangers only for that "cliffhanger momentum" to only carry over to the first one or two episodes of the following seasons. I feel that's storytelling cheating. Why couldn't that one or two episodes just be the previous season's finale? It's like story arcs in manga/anime. They have beginnings, middles and endings (most of the time). Sure, they can have a small teaser of sorts at the end but the actual conflict of the arc gets resolved before the ending. E.g. Attack on Titan Season 2 didn't end with the Smiling Titan arriving and leaving us with a cliffhanger for a year only to be resolved in a single episode, so that the rest of the season could focus on the Uprising arc. No, they gave us a proper conclusion which was satisfying enough and the season ended with that short Zeke teaser.
I feel Breaking Bad peaked with the second half of Season 4 and Season 5 was just kinda there. It added a bunch of new characters never teased previously and overall felt kinda rushed. I mean, for how long was Walter at the top of the food chain? I would argue only two episodes. From the "Say my name." scene until Hank's "toilet revelation."
Now I’m kinda interested to see how you’d react to Better Call Saul. That show’s even slower paced than Breaking Bad was, but I think it pulls it off better than Breaking Bad did (especially in regards to your point about season arcs)
I've liked a lot of your content in the past but this felt like a weak video. You spend a lot of time repeating yourself and stating the obvious. The video essentially amounts to a summary of "show don't tell", which is the first lesson you’re taught in your high school English class. Breaking Bad is a good demonstration of it, but for a lot of this video you just reiterate that point at such lengths that it felt like padding. I would have cut down about 5 minutes of this video personally
