  • *MAJOR SPOILER WARNING seriously if you haven't watched the show don't let me spoil it for you!*
Also my apologies for the low quality footage in some parts! Mostly I tried to use my own footage but had to use uploaded clips in some parts so the quality dipped! Hopefully it's not too distracting, and sorry again!
PHEW this was a beast of a video to make. Skip to the end if you want an explanation as to why this video is so different to my usual content, but tdlr; I'm going to try branching out into video essays/analysis/discussion videos, and topics that I personally enjoy rather than just drama :) Hope you enjoy, this was super fun to make!!

I even think Walter’s entire love for Chemistry was rooted in an admiration for violence. I’m rewatching the show now, and twice Walt informs Jesse of times in history when Chemistry was used in war to create poison and inflict severe damage. He loves the fact that he can level entire buildings, or destroy many lives without primal violence.

I agree 100% with you, but I will say that the original Jekyll and Hide is actually what you described in the video. Hollywood and pop culture has turned the Jekyll and Hide story into the tale of a split personality, when the original book was actually about Dr. Jekyll wanting to embrace his darker side and deciding to use some sort of potion thing to change his appearance and take no blame. By the end of the story Hide felt like a completely different person and the potion thingy that Jekyll created started going haywire. The theory is actually the story of Jekyll and Hide without the physical changes.

I agree with most of these points. I've always kinda hated the whole "Walt vs Heisenberg", "Anakin vs Vader", "Light vs Kira" angle. They're the same person they were. Yeah, they changed. But it's still them.
Small nitpick, though. You used the examples of Walk "joking" about his crimes to Hank as a sort of form of guilt surfacing. Which is understandable because Skylar thinks so, too. But, to me, it always seemed like Walt not liking needing to hide his "accomplishments". He takes a lot of pride in his work, his product, and the rewards he reaps. It seriously bugs him that Hank, who he has always resented and felt a rivalry with, will never see him as nothing but a weak everyman. No one will ever know how awesome he is and what he did. Something he's mostly okay with because he doesn't wanna go to jail, but forever haunts him. Gretchen and Elliot will continue to grow rich and famous while he will die in obscurity. I dunno, that was just my take on them.

What further supports this interpretation is also simply the name Heisenberg. While Walter is a chemist, the name alludes to physicist Werner Heisenberg, who formulated the uncertainty principle of quantum mechanics. The uncertainty principle states that one can't know the momentum of a subatomic particle and its position at the same time.
The use of this reference implies Walter is uncertain about who he is, whether he's truly a hardened criminal deep down or a family man.

This reminds me a LOT of Jekyll and Hyde. The popular understanding of that story now is that it's about a nice man who is transformed by a potion into a different man who is evil. However, the source material is actually very different. In the original story, Jekyll has been holding back cruel and violent urges all his life. He creates the potion as a sort of disguise he can use to finally act on those evil urges without getting caught. Jekyll and Hyde are not two different people, Hyde is just the alter ego Jekyll uses to do anything he wants without repercussions.
Similarly, Heisenberg. People can argue endlessly over when exactly the kind high school teacher became the evil murderer. But there will never be an answer to that question, because the premise is flawed from the start. Walter and Heisenberg are not two different people, Heisenberg is just the alter ego Walter uses to do whatever he wants without repercussions.

@@Izzzyzzz real late but just wanted to say that vince himself honestly has explained walter better than most fan analysis and it does basically confirm the walt is heisenberg thing but it also has a bit more nuance to it considering he didn't initially think of walter as a bad guy.
honestly the big takeaway for me is that thinking walt is uniquely evil at any point isn't really helpful, it's more just that he never was able to deal with his actual problems till the end, even when it came out so clearly because of circumstance, he had such a bruised ego (of his own making in a decent sense because it was so deep rooted) that he'd have died rather than deal with it properly, until the very last episode of the series, by which point he's lost everything else except for the path of heisenberg,
which might just be more tragic, that it wasn't only by nature but simply by not acknowledging his faults in a healthy way, that he chose to become this, to not deal with those problems in a sense. it's even more tragic that he was satisfied with having lived just for that heisenberg. and even being the genius he was, he likely never really ended up understanding that, he just ended up dying happily at a point where he got that it was impossible for him to be anything more even if he lived.

All of those make sense to differentiate the "original" person from the new one. i’m so glad someone made a video about this!! people always get so obsessed with “walt vs. heisenberg” when talking about BB and it always makes it feel like they don’t really get the point. heisenberg isn’t some alternate personality that walt uses to do bad things. it’s a coping mechanism to avoid the reality that he himself has done all these terrible things, a lesson which he doesn’t learn until the very end. i think the reason so many people love to talked about “when walt became heisenberg” is that the show is so good and putting you inside walt’s head and making you see his perspective, in which heisenberg is a badass persona that does what walt is too afraid to do.

@@ShiroNero94 that’s what’s so clever about the writing (and why the whole discussion of “when did Walt become Heisenberg” is such a thing), because yeah, everyone I’ve spoken to who’s watched the show twice has said exactly the same thing, myself included.
On the initial watch you’re beguiled into feeling bad for Walt so much that you’re willing to overlook a lot of shit, and at the same time you get frustrated with Skyler for not understanding that Walt’s just a good guy struggling to provide for his family.
And then you rewatch it, knowing where things go, and you see that Walt was always a prideful, self-serving git, and Skyler is just a normal woman responding to shit like her husband disappearing for days and becoming a fucking meth dealer. Obviously there are still some people who hate her no matter what, but there’s some people who are always looking for any excuse to scream at women fictional or otherwise, so they’re best ignored.

whole video is spot on. you hinted on this but if you think about it ..grey matter as a plot point really serves ZERO purpose besides giving him ONE extra motive in his decision to cook... which he has plenty of motive to begin with. I think the writers weaved in grey matter into the early episodes to emphasize that Walt has always been like this from the start, he never could of run grey matter successfully. All the traits in Heisenberg were there even in his youth (pride, ego, greed, and impulsiveness). They also never threw this right at your face, they didn't explain Walts contributions or exit from the company anywhere in the show. Every point in this video is slowly implied as the series goes on.

I'm watching Breaking Bad for the first time, and yeah, you're right. After I finished the first series I never really got why people always said things to me like, 'so this is when Walter turns evil' or whatever. Like, the guy beats up a random teenager in a clothing store, destroys someone's car, heck even thought it would be a good idea to start cooking meth as a viable solution to his problems early on in the show. Guy clearly had something inside him long before putting on a funny hat and calling himself Heisenberg.

I always felt that the only thing that *really* changed over the series, and the only thing stopping him from being like Heisenberg in the beginning, was fear. He was always a selfish, insecurely narcissistic, calculating, potentially vicious man, but he was also a coward. When he’s given a death sentence and confronted with an urgent need for big cash, he has his first motivators to face his cowardice. From that point, he gradually realizes what he’s capable of and how much he genuinely enjoys the power, and there are no brakes on that train because he’s always been Heisenberg deep down. The final scene is very “Walt” though - at peace, kinda wandering around the lab, admiring his vats, proud of his work, a true nerd at the very end, the same guy who enthusiastically talked about chemistry in S1E1. He never went anywhere.

Walter didn't let Jane die he moved her from a safe position (lying on side cuddled with jesse) to a dangerous one on her back. he facilitated her death and then mourned it lightly but still didn't preform cpr or anything he decided she had to die because even in Walter's narcissism he needed Jesse. the fact he placed Jane in risk of death through his actions is beyond just negligence into manslaughter minimum.

i 100% agree. watching it a second time, there is pretty much nothing to like about Walt from day 1. I seriously cried for Jessie the second time, he was manipulated and abused so badly by Walt. Breaking Bad is about letting go of fear. You could say, it is also a Stoic Poem about the inner worm vs the inner god. "The mind is its own place and in itself, can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven." John Milton. In Breaking Bad Walter White make a Hell of Heaven, and in El Camino Jesse make a Heaven of Hell.

The turning point is when he shaves his head. In breaking bad, and most other shows, I see the character shave their head when something traumatic happens to them that changes them.
Like how Jesse shaved his hair after killing gale. This was also a confirmed theory by Aaron paul himself.
I’ve seen many people say he’s selfish, however he has done many selfless stuff during the course of the show.

I agree with that, I had a discussion with someone when the show was first airing in the later seasons that Walt was never a nice guy or a good guy, he was just too much of a wuss to act on his darker impulses. I don't think he turned into Heisenberg as much as just started to let Heisenberg out, in bigger and bigger spurts. The milestones were just new lines he crossed with that... I think the most pivotal line was letting Jane die, it's the first time he let someone die for his convenience and not self defense. But it was always in him.
