So, you must be asking why I'm translating this song when there's already a translation out there (specifically this one: • Reverse Rainbow with E... )
It's because I've always been EXTREMELY irritated by the translation done for my favorite song of all time (well, kind of), so I felt like there was some sort of "injustice" towards the song to have such a bad translation. Case in point: that translation-along with translations of other songs across the web-are translated by dorks who don't even speak Japanese. I'm sick of it, so this is my first video that I've translated from Japanese to English, though I seem to be lagging by a few years, considering that this song came out years ago... orz
------------------------
Translation Notes: This song is a bit difficult to translate because it's not very clear who's singing about what. It becomes a real problem when you try to put "I," "him," or other pronouns when they aren't actually specified in the original song. So the next best thing is to just guess.
Also, a note about the part where Rin is singing about the umbrella. She's trying to imply to whoever she's speaking to that she doesn't literally want an umbrella from him, but rather that she wants to simply be next to him (specifically, under a cramped umbrella. OH, THE ROMANCE!)
If you have any suggestions or requests to translate any songs-Vocaloid, Touhou or otherwise-then shoot me a message with the title of the song.

逆さまレインボー [Sakasama Rainbow]
Composed by: sunzriver

English Lyrics:
It's reversed, this rainbow
While you're riding on top of it
It's stubborn, this melody
It's fun, it's sad
(x2)
Even if you line up your excuses, it'll only be erased by this rust
If you're going to stack them, rather than words use melody and harmony
A cloud that grows crooked, as though it's sneering
I will travel beyond them
It's reversed, this rainbow
While you're riding on top of it
It's stubborn, this melody
It's happy, it's lonely
If you're the one that's able to easily change the sound of rain to raindrops
Then it seems as though all of this blue could change to yellow
I tried arranging these seven colors nonsensically
But wait... is something not right?
The thing that I want
It isn't an umbrella... Don't you understand yet?
It's reversed, this rainbow
While you're riding on top of it
It's stubborn, this melody
It's lovesick, it's heartbreaking
It's reversed, this rainbow
While you're riding on top of it
It's stubborn, this melody
It's happy, it's lonely
It's reversed, this rainbow
It's stubborn, this melody
It's fun
It's sad
It's happy
It's lovesick
I think it could be a song about unrequited love, and the two opposing sides to it. Rin symbolizes being happy to be in love and hopeful. Miku symbolizes the sadness and loneliness. I could be wrong, but that's just how I see it. The rainbow is reversed because love is supposed to be happy, but it isn't always. And maybe also because the one the girl loves doesn't seem to notice. It gives off a sense of being in another type of reality, somehow. I don't know, maybe I'm reading too much into it!
this makes a lot of sense actually
Here's my interpretation of this song:
Despite the upbeat melody and bright colors, this is a sad song. Rin and Miku have feelings for one another. Rin tries to hide her feelings, deny them, and pretend they don't exist. Miku, on the other hand, acknowledges and accepts her feelings for Rin. Miku is sad and lonely, whereas Rin lies to herself that the way she's living now is fun, and that she feels happy. Both of them refuse to tell the other how they really feel, for completely different reasons.
The first verse, in particular, stuck out to me in defining who was feeling what.
Even if you line up your excuses, it'll only be erased by this rust (Rin)
If you're going to stack them, rather than words use melody and harmony (Miku)
A cloud that grows crooked, as though it's sneering (Mainly Miku)
I will travel beyond them (Miku)
Line 3 is about a thunderstorm that is building, which symbolizes how they're both struggling with their emotions. Large cumulonimbus clouds are lopsided because more moisture is funneled into the cloud on the side of the warm front (The familiar "anvil shape"). Line 4 is sung only by Miku, who is trying to move past her feelings for Rin, because she either thinks they are unrequited, or that Rin won't acknowledge them regardless. Unfortunately for Miku..."It's stubborn, this melody", which seems to indicate that both of them are having trouble getting over their feelings. They're both making a lot of excuses to mask the way they feel (Lines 1 and 2).
These lines clarify the story further:
"I tried arranging these seven colors nonsensically" (Both- but I think Rin sings most of the line, and that she's the one who is talking here)
"But wait (Rin)... is something not right?" (Both)
A rainbow is a very common symbol for homosexuality...which is really the most obvious part of the song in general. I mean, it's called "Reverse Rainbow". XD. Anyway, Rin is trying to redefine her identity- only to find that the identity she has given herself isn't right.
"The thing that I want (Both)
It isn't an umbrella... Don't you understand yet?" (Rin)
This line threw me off a little at first....but it can be taken two ways. Rin may be wishing secretly to be close to Miku, and that Miku would express her feelings for her, so that she doesn't have to pretend anymore. Or, Rin might be wanting to be close to an outside person (maybe a guy), so that she can try and fully escape her feelings for Miku.
The animation makes it clear that this is a Yuri tale, as well. From 3:25 to 3:50, it appears as though the two are going to kiss...only for them to move past each other at the last second, instead. The next scene has them standing on opposite sides of a rainbow, facing away from each other. They're both "on the rainbow *ahem*", but only one of them has embraced who they are.
Honestly, I feel bad for both of them. Poor Rin and Miku. :,(
*Overall, this is a beautiful song, with some excellent writing. Note that I only speak English, so my interpretation is solely from looking at the English translation and the animations. The meaning I ascertained is my opinion, and there are probably many different interpretations of this song. I merely wanted to express my thoughts on it. :) Also, I'm new to Vocaloid, so if I mixed up which singer was singing a line....apologies XP.
wonderful
BlackBack _018 i bet u like to see all girls as “just friends” lolz
@@oranges-bz8lf lmao ""gal pals"
Yea you mixed up the singer but that's still a great interpretation lmao
Now I understand why Miku kissed Rin/Luka in the Project Mirai music video
WHICH SALTY LENXRIN SHIPPER DISLIKED THIS 😤
@MirukiMimiko Thank you! I'm glad to see that you enjoyed it. I hate to complain so much about one person and to diss them, but this song seriously deserved a real translation. What's worse is that people who watched that video and don't speak Japanese would never know that the lyrics were wrong otherwise!
I'm so glad I found this translation! It makes so much more sense than the one I've been reading for years~ Thank you ^^
We all know who that one disslike is
yeah *cough* lordxwillie *cough*
He got one song wrong
@@Ambipie yeah I agree. It was only one song I dont think he would be ap bitter about it. Unless he was bullied off for other translations. Or he simply fell out of his vocaloid phase. Who knows... I dont.

The related is flooded with kid’s nursery rhymes for me for some reason
Wow, thank you for taking this into your own hands and making the English translation make so much more sense! I don't know any Japanese (well, not enough to construct a sentence, let alone do subbing), so I always have to settle for the translations that make very little sense--but not any more! Again, thanks.
I've never found a Vocaloid song that hits me as hard as this. Everything about it is just so beautifully constructed. All the way down to the video 🥰🥰🥰
Ha, and I thought the vocaloids were on drugs! Thanks for the correction!!!
I swear, Miku and Rin always sound so good together we need more songs with Miku and Rin singing together fr
YES. I LOVE IT. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS.
Honestly rin and miku are my OTP 💯🌈❤️
This is so beautiful. How have I never come across this song before? Thank you for the good translation, it's much appreciated!
Awesome! Really good subbing here. I noticed (as I know a LITTLE Japanese, but not much) that some of willie's translation seemed off, yours is really good ^^
That makes a bit more sense.
@AisuTalonz Thanks! If you ever have any suggestions for translations, I'm always open.
God thank you. My pain is eased. ;-;
wowie i was so wrong all the time thanks holy shit
I love you RIN and MIKU !!
THANK YOU

Same
Yess otp
Rin and miku make a good team! ^-^
anyone here from project mirai after miku kisses rin
I love this video
I am stuck with lordxwillie's translations, I got too used to it already...
+。おたとP I'll take a look at this translation and adjust it a little, and make SRT subtitles for you. There is a kanji pun in the lyrics, that isn't noticed in this translation: AME means: rain/sweets(candy). The lyrics says: "If it's you who easily can change the sound of AME into a AME-ball". The first AME is rain, and the AME-ball is a lollipop. Jisho.org says that raindrop(s) is amatsubu/amadare/tenteki/uteki in Japanese. I know that amedama = AME-ball means a round lollipop, because I translated a song where "give me your sweet amedama" meant "let me suck your XXXXX". To find that video, please search on UA-cam for:
Go to Miku's room! subtitles English Romaji
+。おたとP I think it might be: ...use melody and harmony, and that melody and harmony will go beyond (somewhere here) just like (a) diagonally extending cloud(s) will go beyond (somewhere here). Not exactly poetry at this stage! I must keep the lovely style of this translation. Anyway, the verb koeru means go beyond or overcome a hindrance. When you cross mountain pass by foot, then is koeru the ideal verb to describe that activity.
+Goishi-kaigan made mou please do upload my video with your translations on your channel if possible, can share this song with even more people :)
+。おたとP We need to ask LevstaSubs for permit first. Her(?) translation is perfect, except for 4 words maybe: "raindrops" and "I will travel". I'll have to think more about those 4 words for a while.
+。おたとP lordxwillie's English translation is total garbage, the worst I've ever seen - I laughed so I got tears in my eyes! It's about 20% correct and 80% totally off... LOL, LOL, LOL!!!
@LevstaSubs -nods- I have to agree with you on that. I only know a little myself, but I still realized that the words were off. Good job to you though ^^
Dear Miss LevstaSubs, Is your translation exclusive rights, or is it permitted to use it in subtitles at other channels? (Naturally with credits and links to you/your video). Best regards
Pretty good! And a million times better than the other one. >8P
Ladies and gentlemen, please rise for the Japanese national anthem. XD
