- I sincerely apologize if this video is scaring anyone about this surgery. I assume if you are getting the linx implant ONLY without a hiatal hernia repair the recovery will be a much better one. In my case it was both hiatal hernia with linx and my wife and kids had to witness suffering everyday for a very long time. I’m sure there are better success stories than mine as far as recovery goes and I sure hope so.. If you look deeper into the Linx statistics there is a percentage of patients who have to continue PPI use after the surgery has healed and linx has settled in, it is not that uncommon for this to happen. Everything has side effects nowadays. NOTHING IS 100%. You fix the main problem but some other issues come along with that fix. No different with the Linx, Unfortunately. Loss of appetite is real. Weight Loss is real. Still have to watch your diet after surgery is real. Extreme nausea for a long time is real. The chance that you may have to still take PPI after you heal is real.
A chance the device does not work is real. Long battles with Diarrhea is real. The list goes on. They list these for a reason and it should be noted in your decision making. The Surgeon SOLD ME on “you’re going to fixed”. He was right, he did fix the heartburn problem but he has no control over other issues and side effects you have to live with after fixing the problem. The Surgeon did not explain the severity of the recovery. Honestly it’s probably imossible too. I’ve had 2 Great GASTRO Dr’s because I wanted a 2nd opinion and a Great Surgeon. Both GASTRO Dr’s did not like the idea or the options for surgery, for this disease and injury. Both said the same thing “it will not fix any stomach issues but it will protect your esophagus” Unfortunately I had no choice because of the hernia size. When my heartburn battle was solved and began having stomach issues I went back to the surgeon. He sent me back to the GASTRO Dr and said “My job is done. It was to protect your esophagus and the linx is working.” I was pissed at that answer but now realize he was right. Honestly, He did what he was paid for. GASTRO Dr remarks on stomach issues “ that’s why we recommend diet and life change first and surgery as a last resort because the Linx does not fix the stomach”
I would do the surgery again because it has help me get my life back, just wanted to share my true experience so others can make the best decision for family and future. Don’t be afraid of any challenge it will only make you better in the process...
Forgot to mention those LINX SPASMS in the video, they will haunt you for MONTHS, HANG IN THERE. IT WILL GET BETTER ONLY WITH TIME.
Honestly the faster you accept that you will never be the same the quicker you can start moving forward. I still have discomfort a couple times a day but nowhere near the beginning.
Also around the 1 year mark after turning the corner and feeling much better, my mind didn't know how to RECEIVE IT. From being in consistent pain and discomfort every day for approximately 1 year and 9 months my mind was searching for something wrong when there was nothing, BE CAREFUL with your thoughts.WITH GERD, BEFORE SURGERY OR POST SURGERY TRY NOT TO EVER GO ON AN EMPTY STOMACH it causes Acid flare ups and gas, I know its tough to do but it really does make a difference.

YOGURT is great for soothing the stomach and its a natural probiotic. It is in the dairy family but for some reason it is recommended for gerd.

This was a fantastic video. I saw it in my recommended list but didn't have time to watch it. I searched for this video by what little I could remember about the title. I'm so thankful to have found it. Grumpy Old Man (my husband) had this surgery (Nissen Fundoplication and Hiatal Hernia repair) on 11-14-23 (today is 12-8-23). Everything was going as expected until he came down with a severe stomach virus about 5-6 days after surgery. He had fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea, which we thought was related to the surgery. He spent 2 days in the hospital (eventually). So anyway, he's still having extreme nausea, tiredness and weakness. Hence, the reason for searching for this video. Now I understand that this is 'normal'. I think he's lost 15 pounds or more at this point. So, this video takes away some of the worry and fear. My husband will be 69 years old on Monday (12-11). Btw, his surgeon immediately took him off of all PPI. So now I'm wondering about that decision.
Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. It means you care. So many doctors make patients think it's an easy surgery because they perform so many. Each person will have different results. For me, listening to different stories is helping me to prepare for what I may need to do before, during, and after surgery. I am sorry there were things you had to suffer through to figure out what worked for you and I admire your courage to continue on exploring ways to help yourself feel better. Even more so to now take the time to share that with us so we might not have to go thru the same sufferings. Thank you for your encouragement to stay positive. This is a very serious surgery with a long recovery so you are so right to remind us to be patient in order to heal. I have had a hysterectomy and it sounds like similar pain because it all has to do with the abdomen. Healing takes time but it's all worth it. I have GERD, acid reflux, hiatal hernia and Barrett's esophagus. The Nissen surgery is certainly on the radar. Thank you again for all of the helpful information. I suffer from a sliding Hiatal hernia with acid reflux, I'm going to see if I can have Stretta procedure which involves the insertion of an endoscope via the mouth to strengthen the muscles around the bottom part of the oesophagus. This technique has the advantage of avoiding the need for surgical incisions and can even be done without the need for general anaesthesia and also I want the surgeon to do a straight hiatus hernia diaphragm repair only to strengthen the diaphragm muscle around the stomach. thanks for the video glad your feeling better, you've been through the wringer, your wife has been a great support.

I'd say a year+ of suffering, in and out of hospital, food restrictions, lowered immune system and needing to stay dependent on meds isn't a huge benefit...

I have GERD, gastritis, Barrett's Esophagus and a hiatal hernia. I was excited to hear about this procedure as it sounded so much like a less complicated surgery than the fundoplication which is a longer period of time under anesthesia. I am 74 and have recently been prescribed MORE PPI's and Ranitidine and today, after another yet visit with my ENT was told that my month-long bout of laryngitis is caused by (YOU GOT IT), acid reflux. At my age, PPI's can actually speed up dementia (told by a leading neurologist after intense testing). Unfortunately, I may opt for the more serious procedure - Fundoplication and have this done once and for all. Wish me luck!
Earlene Lown Did you have it done? I need it as well. I’ve recently been taking Meletonin one hour before bed, it has actually been slightly helpful and I sleep better.
My vocal chords were paralyzed and falling down my throat, causing me to choke. I had vocal chords surgery 5/22 where they were put back in place and filled with Botox. 4/23 Back to the same thing! The Dr said there was no need to fix them again until I got the GERD under control. The best thing you can do is totally rest you VC's by only talking when necessary. I've gone 2.5 years without a voice or else a scratchy voice. Best of luck to you!

This helped me to decide not to get the procedure. Going to try relief through diet and pre and probiotics which takes a while but considering what you went through and how long it took, I'll try to be patient. Thank you so much for your honest and detailed account. Great job. Ive had this problem for 55 years and still no barrettes, even though its terribly disabling. Dont ever let a doctor try to scare you into a procedure by dooming you to cancer. Not good practice.
I am disgusted by some of these really rude comments! I appreciate you sharing YOUR experience. I have a choice between 3 types of surgery and am deciding which one to do. I have a hiatal hernia, GERD, chronic gastritis, esophagitis for years and I am so bad now I have to so this. I didn’t do this because of that test you talked about! I did so the one where they put a pill in and you wear a monitor for a few days.
That test isn’t that bad. You just have to stay really calm and follow the instructions of the nurse. Step by step. I got mine done a couple months ago. U literally have to be super focused to try to not gag

I appreciate this SOOO much! I see my gastro next week to discuss my options. I had the hernia repair & fundoplication done 8/23 and a redo 9/23. I have had ZERO relief! It is worse now because I can't vomit when I'm sick. The PPU's scare me because of relation to Dementia. What in the world are we supposed to do. GERD is a whole nother level of sick!

@@franhar8292 I saw your comment and wanted to reply since it hasn't been addressed yet by the person who posted it. Grumpy Old Man (my husband) had surgery about 3 weeks ago. He had Nissen Fundoplication and hiatal hernia repair. It's been rough so far. The nausea has been the worst part. We felt we had no choice but to have this surgery. So, as you probably know, the esophagus has a sphincter. It opens when you swallow to allow food into your stomach, and then closes. When it stays open all of the time, your stomach acid is allowed into the esophagus causing erosion/ulcers. My husband had acid reflux caused by this, and multiple ulcers in his esophagus and 1 in his duodenum. They were getting worse and more of them. So, in my opinion, diet changes don't help much in this situation because the stomach acid is still sitting in your esophagus/throat eroding away. (Of course, I'm talking about pre-surgery.) My husband has had endoscopy and esophagus dilation done 16 + times. I've now lost count. I watched a video a few days ago of a guy who had basically the same problems as my husband. He let it go on for years. Finally, he ended up with a strangulated hernia and a ruptured esophagus which of course, almost killed him. Grumpy Old Man will be 69 years old on 12-11-23. This is 3 weeks into recovery, and as I stated it has been a rough ride so far. He still doesn't feel like doing anything. I made another comment on this video with a little more information about post-op.

Thank you for your service. Unfortunately, one of my coworkers committed suicide after the surgery because it was giving him that much trouble. This is a great warning to everyone considering the LINX procedure.
After having my vesectomy i felt this way, i had complications and could hardly walk and in such severe pain. Luckily turned out to be an infection and got it cleared up. I honestly felt i could not continue living with the pain though. Thanks for the warning.
I had the procedure in June 2018. I was 18 at the time. I’ll say the gas pain is definitely the worst and the pain meds didn’t do a whole lot to help. But yes heat pads do help a lot. As for eating, I lost a decent amount of weight but gained it back after a couple of months. But I will say that my eating still isn’t normal. Food still gets stuck if I eat too fast and I think I will deal with that the rest of my life. But it is well worth it for COMPLETELY stopping my unnecessary heart burn. Getting the surgery is the best thing you can do, even though you will struggle for a while. I will say though the day of surgery is when I stopped all meds and haven’t taken any since
Dav ide I did experience heartburn for a while after the surgery probably around your time. I was getting it almost everyday actually. And at first I was a little scared but I let it go and later on I had no further heartburn. I only now get heartburn if I eat really bad. I wouldn’t be concerned if I were you, just keep following the process and listen to what they tell you and you will be just fine!

Thank you for this great video. I just had the LINX surgery 28 days ago and I feel horrible with the low immune system, diarrhea, depression and all the other issues you mentioned you had. I love all the info you gave on diet. Maybe you should consider another video with a more detailed diet plan. I know that would help me a lot.

@@Alexis_005 No, but learning to change how I do thing and adjusting. I was left with gastroparesis and dysphagia, along with a damaged vagus nerve, which causes other issues like runny nose, face pain and a bunch of odd things. I often am forced to vomit my food because the LINX doesn't always open.

I am 3 weeks after my HH and Linx surgery, I am damn near back to normal already. I have not slept laying flat in 8 years and have been sleeping flat constantly since the surgery with no issues. I am still taking Omeperazole but I am only taking 20mg once a day and was on 60mg, next step is taking 20mg every other day before I am completely off it. The linx has been a life saver for me! I think the main issue is people think that just getting this surgery that it is going to fix their gerd issues and that is not the case. You have to change your diet and allow your stomach to also heal, if you eat bad foods you will STILL get reflux.

Now from sleeping sitting up my neck is so sore and stiff and I’m just in hell!! I am in desperate need of info so I can educate myself on a diet of what is good to eat and what to avoid. Had my LINX surgery almost 5 years ago. Had two weeks of swallowing issues and after that I never looked back. Occasionally something will get stuck but it is in no way worse than the reflux. I have yearly testing and everything seems fine. Everyone is different, sorry it didnt work out for you.

Same...after around 2 weeks advanced diet and at week 3 eating way more normal foods. NO GERD NO PPIs

What diet did you do?
No alcohol at all and laid off fast foods and spicy stuff more often and stopped eating before 8pm. After about a year my body has healed id say about 90%. I can eat crappy again it's just knowing by trial and error. It's all about what you can tolerate and it takes A LOT OF DISCIPLINE FOR SURE.
Thank you for this info. I have an adult son who has horrific issues with gerd. They mentioned the lynx and I was all on board. But realize now with his autism he will never be able to handle this procedure and all the effects afterwards. Thank you for the honesty. I will not consider this for him.
I had the linx. After a month I felt awesome . No heartburn . Fixed my hiatal hernia. Life changer .

@Waterlec that's so funny you would mention coffee . I love coffee and had to switch to decaf because of that reasoning . Not the same lol I look at pictures of all the apartments I've had , one thing stands out ! In every bathroom away several bottles of antacids. Plus I had a hiatal hernia that wasn't large but still giving me problems . it would slide up and I would get weak in my legs .

Had nothing but problems and pain since mine 3 months ago. My surgeon has not been helping me solve the issues that I have been having. This guy is right about the manometry. I almost passed out and they had to stop so I could relax my breathing. And the stomach problems are not from the PPi's as someone mentioned here. I have had horrible problems with my stomach and I have not used PPI's since surgery.

Just had my manometry test, I will say you were right longest 10-15 minutes of my life, it was just terrible, it felt like I was choking the whole time, I got it done but would never do it again, god bless bro

Having had this surgery 6 months ago I can appreciate this guy putting the video up. At this point I still have daily painful swallowing and problems with stomach bloating/ discomfort above the device.
Also beware Waterlec. This person has either never had the surgery or has a vested financial interest in linx. You will not be eating normally after just three days. It’s a very tough recovery eating wise and the chest spasms and headaches aren’t enjoyable either. It did cure my reflux straight away. I took ranitidine on doctors orders for 4 weeks to help the stomach heal but o could have stopped straight away. Worth noting that it is not easy to remove the device. The scar tissue heals round such that they have to dig each bead out which will cause a lot of new scar tissue. In retrospect given my bloating issues I’d probably have just gone for the nissen as that can also give bloating but you don’t have something foreign in your body. I would also certainly not get surgery if you can live on the ppis without much problem. I had very bad side effects
gary1728 try to wonder a new treatment the ARMS anti Reflux mucosectomy it seem a good way from Japan , recently there are trial in The US. Take out LINx

After a week of PPIs they give me IBS. Everything makes me have emergency shits basically. I take PPI sporadically.

Well done. Thank you. FYI . my research on PPIs ... is that extended use.... and the reduction of stomach acid... which breaks down food properly... can lead to cancer.
Tplayer49 i took PPIs for a considerable time and it messed up with my gut, ended up with sibo and other complications.

It gives me severe IBS if i take them more than a week. That means any time I eat i must have a bathroom near by as I get emergency shits. Balancing IBS and GERD is why im looking for surgery. Dr told me without the acid the bad bacteria doesnt die and causes issues.

My name is Robert and clearly I’m not alone , Gerd hit me two years ago . And as we all know it ain’t no joke . This disease takes over your life , it’s just a game that you have to play that says eat right or I will hurt your stomach The pain is severe with different symptoms ,One day my guts are shaking the next day I’m bloated or the following day Food is stuck in my gut throat etc. And the symptoms keep changing. I had type 3 very big hiatal hernia. I didn't get the implant ring, I got the wrap. I'm 3.5 weeks post surgery & doing well, no acid reflux at all. Such a relief after 40 years of gerd/reflux and many other problems. I'm still healing. I get pain if i bend over, so I'm not bending. I am not taking any PPIs Im very thankful. I hope you will be able get off the PPIs they are vey bad and should not be taken long term.
You mentioned at the beginning that the pb&j feeling like it was stuck due to your hernia is what propelled you to get the implant. Did this improve once you got the surgery?

Amandia Black It went well. Soft diet and some pain the 1st month. The more time passes, the more normal eating becomes and I can eat most anything as long as I do not overeat.
The only think is, with Nissen a lot of people are left unable to burp as needed, and many are left unable to vomit as the body needs.
Kristina Troxell Those side effects do not last forever unless the surgeon was that bad at their job . nissen Fundoplication has the highest success rate and has been practiced the most to be able to perfect it over time . My sister had it done and 7 years later she is fine and she had an amazing surgeon in which I will be selecting hers to do mine . my hernia is too bad for the other procedures and the other procedures are way too new . nit saying their bad but they have a lower success rate and have not been practiced enough yet . Lynx wouldnt be good for me bc my body would never adapt to it . I have braces and my body still hates them after 2 years bc titanium doesnt match up well with me . everyones bodies also react differently to everything . whats not good for me could be good for other people as well though .

I went thru the motility test. You explained it sooo well. It was AWFUL! My throat hurt for a week after. Wow I can’t believe you went thru all of this! Have you looked into eating foods that don’t ferment in your stomach. Look into that.
So now that you feel like normal again, Are you able to workout the way you used to, like lift heavy weights?

i had the surgery June 2016. i didnt start feeling more normal until january 2018 but it wasnt all bad. i had the typical esophageal spasms from time to time but not TOO bad, like a 5-10 minute spasm but then i started getting stronger spasms for awhile, but they went away.. but now i just had a HUGE spasm that lasted hours and im still recovering from it a week later and ill have to probably go in and get this checked .... :(

Holy crap! I just had this surgery two days ago. I thought I was cured. I had a similar experience a year ago where I was fine on minute and thought I was dieting the next. My life has been misery ever since. I hope I don’t have all these problems. I have never taken the pills. Thanks for your advice and honesty.

Do you have upper left chest pain when you sleep on the left side? I believe some of the hiatal hernia repairs fail.
Did they do an electrogastrigam to test the motility of your stomach? A lot of the times if you have slow motility in the stomach, it can cause reflux as well because the pressure of the stomach is greater than that of the LES. Hope all is well now 🙏🏼

I've suffered with gerd, the cough, hoarseness, feeling like something's stuck in my throat. I have trouble swallowing water sometimes. I've been on prescription PPI's for 20 years. They helped me up until a year ago. No side effects. No cancer. First thing I did before going on PPI's was adjust my diet. Apple cider vinegar? My stomach can't handle it. My last egd showed a hernia. I have a friend that had the LINX surgery two months ago and he's doing great. Only bad part for him was for 6 weeks you have to take one bite of something, chew and swallow. It can't be something soft that melts in your mouth. The chewing and swallowing keeps you from forming scar tissue. I pretty much made up my mind to do the surgical consult. I may not be a good candidate. Definitely don't want the tube going down my nose. This is a good video. Doesn't sugar coat the experience. So now I have the friend that said it's the best thing he could have done, and the opposite impression that I'd have a year of misery and go bankrupt going to the health food store.

@@mrarabcelop4723 Hey thanks for asking. I've been on Dexilant 60 mg 2xday since 2014. Dexilant saved me. It cleared up my esophagus of being 3/4 eroded plus the ulcers and gastritis. I've had people tell me to try holistic meds. I was a hippie. Nothing against a particular age geographic. But I'm like folks we were doing holistic before people had a name for it. I'm also originally from New Orleans. Yes spicy food. My best friend opened the first local owned health food supplement store in nola. Stress is a real factor that doctors do not stress enough besides diet. Where I'm at now and I attribute it to stress, I lost my 22 yr old daughter 6 yrs ago. I know I don't eat small meals throughout the day like I should. It's hard to eat when you just feel like breathing is a success. Ok ginger? Hurts big time and holistic says it helps. Jelly like this guy says? Jelly has never been a problem. I haven't had aspirin or NSAIDs since 2014. I have it listed as something I'm allergic to with all my docs. Right now I've got thrush in my esophagus. I'm not diabetic, I am on steroid inhalers. Yes I always rinse. I have a husband's friend that did fantastic on the LINX. Now one thing I noticed that was different from our guy here and believe me I'm so glad for his video. My friend told me the hardest part was having to eat something once an hour every hour for 6 wks following surgery that required chewing and swallowing. He said crackers, chips, he couldn't even do cheese puffs because the dissolve. You want those magnets in the LINX to work every hour on the hour for a full 6 wks to keep from forming scar tissue, then they can't work. Do not do apple sauce. My friend is symptom free , eats drinks what he wants, no otc or prescription meds. I've kept a food diary and know my stressors. I'm having another egd in 3 wks because the yeast was so bad the doctor couldn't see my esophagus. He's also doing a another gradual stretch I have scar tissue. I know this is way more info than you were expecting. I don't know how much you suffer. Gerd can really hurt. Like it hurt to swallow water.
Oh I'm sensitive to side effects. Dexilant no problem. They saved my life. My esophagus was completely 3/4 eroded. It cleared up the erosion after getting on it and having egds every month for 3 months. I'm still on Dexilant. I was on Nexium when it was expensive prescription yrs ago.

Well, how about another update? How's it going now? My doctor has told me the same things, keep a good diet and take my omeprazole. I quit smoking, I quit drinking, I try to maintain a good diet, but here I am, I still have issues.

People with Nissen get more disphagia, have difficulty bleching as needed, and a lot of people cannot vomit as needed.
There is a partial fundoplication that supposedly decreases these side effects.

it sounds like they might not have fitted the right size? i never had nausea after the surgery, in fact i havent even felt nauseous the last 3 years beside a couple times i drank alcohol. its good to hear your experience but it should be emphasized how it can be a different experience for everyone.

Had my device for seven years its a blessing this is not a NORMAL recovery.

noureddine elgheur I had the procedure in June 2018. I was 18 at the time. I’ll say the gas pain is definitely the worst and the pain meds didn’t do a whole lot to help. But yes heat pads do help a lot. As for eating, I lost a decent amount of weight but gained it back after a couple of months. But I will say that my eating still isn’t normal. Food still gets stuck if I eat too fast and I think I will deal with that the rest of my life. But it is well worth it for COMPLETELY stopping my unnecessary heart burn. Getting the surgery is the best thing you can do, even though you will struggle for a while.

I kept on taking protonix for the first week.
I just dropped taking them now I am on week 3. Its been hard this week. Food getting stuck and some vomiting ( a lot ). Lost some weight, this is the week where the LINX sits tight and some scar tissue forms around it. The tightness os the esophagus is normal at this point. If you work out, add some creative to your juices to gain back weight. It’s going to be tough between week 3 and 4.
As per PPIs, cut them in half( if you take 40, take only 20mg ). The acid got reduced a lot till almost none now. Not coming out thru the LINX as it’s sitting better.
But kind you, I stopped drinking and eating anything that gives me bad heartburns.
I have Barrett’s esophagus and I am expecting stuff to turn bad eventually. But right now, my acid is controlled and not going up to my esophagus and throat. It is helping, I feel it less and less.
You will need to change your lifestyle, ie, no drinking, etc.
This gentleman talks about still taking ppis, wrong, you will be eventually able to stop taking them as the device works better with time!

If you are really bad with that acid, you need to do the surgery. Don’t wait too long like me. I have Barrett’s now that just turn into cancer!

Dav ide that’s the best decision you could have made man. As for heartburn goes, I was told by my surgeon that I could throw all my pills away right away and that’s basically what I did. Like I said I still experienced a little heartburn for about a week or two but after that I literally never have it anymore unless I eat really really bad lol. But don’t worry man, things will get MUCH better. Totally worth it. This guy in the video makes it sound SOOO much worse than it is

It definitely does suck I just had my surgery a month ago still having issues eating but I had to have it because I had sliding hital hernia Barretts esophagus and so much acid reflux I was in pain in and out of hospitals for a few months I hope it goes smooth for me I was scared to get it but if I didn't I would eventually have cancer

Ron Jon. I am in my 8th week. It gets better. The chest pain is starting to lesson. She is going to struggle for a few more weeks. It's very hard. My third, fourth and fifth weeks were the worse. I can eat a lot better now. Tell her hang in there. I'm a female so I know exactly what she is going through. I was just there.
Check this one. Anti-reflux mucosectomy (ARMS) could also narrow the esophagogastric junction (EGJ) as a result of tissue shrinkage induced during cicatrization [3] [4]. We applied this technique using band ligation (ARMS-b) in the management of rGERD. It seems not bad option even better than LINX
