I saw this today and it reminded me of the hock soup my Mam made. I live have lived in New Zealand for the last 60 odd years. I looked in my cupboard and only had yellow split peas and a pkt of middle bacon. I followed your instructions but using the split peas and vegetable stock cubes, not chicken. I am about to sit down to it now for my tea. Fabulous and Thank you for reminding me about this. It is at the end of our winter here in NZ but I will enjoy it from now on. I will try it with the lentils but it’s Great with the Split peas.
Hello once again from Australia, Absolutely adore the soup recipe. I have never made stove top soup before as I have always made my soups in a slow cooker however I will definitely make this recipe. Thank you once again. Debbie - Aussie world.
Next on the list! I've done 2 mince pies and steak and kidney pudding and jam roll poly so far. So glad this lovely lady popped onto my screen. Oh and they all turned out yummy.😊
Just made this, except I had left over mashed potatoes and cauliflower, so added this instead of the shredded potatoes. Delicious. As your husband said, so wholesome.
One of my favorite soups sometimes I change the lentils for green split peas. Love cooking bacon its so cheap and can be used for loads of recipes. Keep the amazing recipes coming really enjoy watching your channel
We had this for the first time in years just a few days ago! Virtually same soup ingredients, but we used bacon ribs and braised them in the oven in some water. Same end result, a great meal.
Of Aldi don't have cooking bacon try Tesco or Lidl. I always add turnip to mine rather than celery also I use ham stock cubes for stock.recently we were late getting home so I literally threw everything in my pressure cooker for 20 minutes we both prefer lentils shoot so blast soup with stick blender till smooth add the bacon bits and crusty bread thickly cut. Perfect meal for these cold nights
Hi mand, ah that soup looked so lovely, carnt wait to try it.with all these lovely meals you and beddy have cooked im looking forward to these cold winter day/night meals. Love Marilyn xx
Wow Amanda that looks like it is one very tasty and wholesome meal. Thanks so very much. I love making soup in the winter. I was a little bit worried about that lovely white shirt though at triple t time 😂😂.
Definitely going to give this one a try, bought a pumpkin the other day to make curried bacon and pumpkin soup, which is one of my favourites at this time of year.
I've just subscribed and I will be making your recipes. I like that you make it so simple to do. I'm looking forward to making pastry as I have never been very good with pastry. Thank you.
Hi Mandy I make this quite regularly, I use ham cubes instead of chicken for a nice ham flavour, great with a slice of plain bread and butter, delicious!!
My all time favourite soup My mum used to make it with bacon bones when we were little, then with ham shanks or a gammon joint. We were all weaned on this. I make it but it never lives up to my mum's.
I was just wondering what to make for today to eat. Thank you for this recipe. I'm going shopping later for the ingredients. I will make it when I'm back home. How does it freeze if I make a few liters of it?
It is pease pudding is it not? I know what you meant though. My aunt made please pudding every Boxing Day night. You could cut it when cold, in fact that is how it was served thinking about it. Sliced and cold, with piccalilli. Awesome memories. Thanks Gillian :)
I'm so glad you used white pepper, I've recently started using it again after many years of just black pepper. I'd forgotten all about it and not had it since I left home years ago-someone brought it in work to season our drinks of hot Bovril at work! It's now all I use and the differnce it makes to cooked veg, expecially cabbage is a game changer 😊
That looks delish! I'm definitely going to cook that. I was wondering if there is a way to see the list of ingredients without running through the transcript? Many thanks
Red lentils' rule of thumb is by volume 4:1 liquid to lentils. Looks lovely btw. It is one of my favourite comfort foods from my childhood in the sixties. Thanks, Dinner lady :)
aye, cooking bacon...you get what you're given lol. But it's really bacon that didn't go through the slicer well. Great value for money! Tesco and Asda sell it. Getting that time of year now for soup/stews. Being honest i'm a clear broth guy and chunky bits of veg. Still drooling looking at your 'ol man ladling it down his neck haha....mmmm white pepper!
I love red lentil soup,though I make it Indian dhal style,great by its self,or over rice.We don’t have cooking bacon here,and bacon is about $9 a pound(454g) $9 todays rate = £6:92😊
Went into Morrisons last night for a pack of their chunky cooking bacon so that I could make some of that tasty soup for today's dinner, and I picked up one of their giant turkey legs while I was in there. Price labels all say 1,600g, but I weighed it when I got home and it was just over 2kg! - Thought I'd give you a heads-up so that you could gallop round there and grab a couple before they all go!
Ya know Mand, my mam used to cook very much like your nana, and the older methods are the best, the young uns now think they are cooking if they warm something up in the microwave. I love your reference to your nan, it reminds me so much of my mam and how she cooked love to you Ian and the fam Maggie xx

In Scotland we use a ham hough with the bone in makes a lovely stock
Aye we do too in the north east for making broth or pease pudding. I reckon we get it from the jocks when they used to invade us...

I thought you had to soak lentils in water for a while, or is that an old wives tale?
Depends on the type, the basic supermarket red lentils just need rinsing. Others might need soaking.
