I always liked the film and how it true it stayed to how Seutonius describes the events. The performances of McDowell, Helen Mirren, Peter O'Tool, Teresa Ann Savoy and John Gielgud are great.
Totally get that. However the real Caligula was even more savage and brutal and sadistic and incestous than any imaginary Joffrey ever could be. He was mad, powerful, blood thirsty and hedonistic to an extent that could never be accurately portrayed on screen.
Love it or hate it, it's iconic enough that it raises to the level of an event like no other. In that way, it's much like Scarface or Batman 1989 in its originality.
Great actor! I read somewhere that his willingness to take on roles of utterly mad people stagnated his career quite alot. ( clockwork orange and caligula)
