    Also, I am a proud owner of one of the 96 Jem Lightfoote decks and it's a very fun control/draw synergy set up, it's a bit stax heavy though so doesn't sound like your cup of tea

      @Unpopularmtg the deck plays a few rule of law effects and breaks parity though playing a spell on each opponents turn, I only pull it out in sweaty/consenting high powered pods as it hoses a lot of common value engines

      That does seem perfect for rule of law effects. And its refreshing in my opinion to hear an unpopular and uncommon commander being used mostly in high power settings. A lot of comments mention how their decks built around unpopular commanders are usually lower powered

    Here's my memey way to build Niambi that I just came up with, in 8 easy steps:
    1. Teferi Timebender is actually in the deck (yea I know, goes against the rules, but bear with me).
    2. Run any number of discard outlets. My personal favourite would be Sage of the Falls (or Niambi Esteemed Speaker for flavor).
    3. Tutor up On Wings of Gold, the new enchantment from the upcoming aetherdrift esper precon.
    4. Run any number of efficient blink effects.
    5. Cast Niambi, tutor up Teferi, then discard him.
    6. Blink Niambi, return Teferi from the graveyard to your hand. This triggers On Wings of Gold, creating you a zombie.
    7. Discard Teferi again, then repeat.
    8. Win with an army of flying Zombies, without ever casting Teferi at all.

Use a go wide token strat and buff them with attacks and if someone tries to remove arthur then give him indestructible (if appliable). I didn't notice in the short, but Idris could be a decent vehicle voltron commander.
    She copies abilities, but not the vehicles type, so she doesn't need to be crewed.
    Copy the Knight Paladin, blink her, return the Knigt and copy it again and you get 12 damage kn each opponent for 6 mana (commander + ghostly flicker or other blinks).

    I started to brainstorm Idris, Soul of the TARDIS after watching this video, as I completely had missed the card when it released. Unfortunately you don't get the ETB effects from the things you clone, because Idris exiles stuff as an ETB effect and not as replacement effect like clones do, but you get to reuse the ETBs of things you exile. One of the more fun interactions I realized was through Cybership, you "manifest" cards from opponent's deck, but they're artifact creatures, so you can exile them with Idris, and when it leaves the battlefield, the cards return to your control frontside up as long as they're permanent cards, non-permanents just remain in exile.

      Here's MY mono color commanders so far just as some suggestions
      EDIT: I just noticed you said you were down to green and white, lol. I agree those ones are way less interesting. I'm still gonna leave this here but I now know this doesn't really apply to you specifically. I shouldve read more closely.
      1. Mono Blue: The Watcher In The Water. This one is fun, love draw-go as a playstyle. You're honestly spoiled for choice with mono blue, it's probably my favorite color combination. Blue + blue is hard to NOT be fun. I also recommend Kaho, Minamo Historian, and if you want something a bit more mainstream, Eluge is really fun.
      2. Mono Black: Trazyn the Infinite. Fast combo decks aren't for everyone by any means, but I like how Trazyn has neat utility activated abilities that can regenerate him, make him invincible, or deal ONE damage to a creature, which kills them because Trazyn has deathtouch. Really neat commander.
      I also recommend Asmodeus, the Archfiend. Pay 4 black mana, draw 7 cards, take 7-8 damage. It's kind of a generic effect but I'm sure there's cool ways you could build it. Maybe a mono-black storm deck.
      3. Mono Red: Magda, the Hoardemaster. Not the mainstream, CeDH Magda, mind you. The crime one from Thunder Junction. Making that many treasures is just BUSTED. The idea is to get a 1 mana artifact that can tap to do a crime on turn one, like Scrabbling Claws or Codex Shredder, and Magda on turn 2. Boom. Profit. I can get an Ulamog the Defiler on the field on like, turn 4 on a good day.
      Mono Red also has Purphoros, Bronze Blooded, Toralf, God of Fury, and Ashling, the Pilgrim, which are all super neat.
      For mono green, I've been working on a Lumra, Below of the Woods deck that sacrifices lands for a billion landfall triggers.
      I can't find a single mono white commander I like tho, really really stuck on that one.

    One of the Dragonlord Kolaghan decks is mine. It's a dragon saboteur deck built around haste, I don't want to wait a whole turn cycle for Balefire Dragon and Drakuseth to get removed before they actually do something. The second ability is basically flavor text.

      @Unpopularmtg  13 днів тому

      I agree, that’s the main issue I have with playing big dragons is they usually need a turn before you can use the effect, and turn yourself into the enemy in the turn cycle before it happens. EDHREC is always boring because of the infinite loop buildup: People use EDHREC to find cards for their decks, then upload those decks to Moxfield/Arcidekt, then EDHREC uses those decks to update their lists. Basically, EDHREC is a terrible source for finding out how to build your deck because it's your 'average deck' list. It won't include cool, niche cards for decks because it only shows popular cards. For new players, it's a good starting point. But if you're more experienced only use it for finding niche commanders or getting basic ideas for your new deck. Nothing more. I don't use it at all anymore.

    • @Unpopularmtg
      @Unpopularmtg  10 днів тому

      It’s true, I don’t like to use EDHREC because it makes my decks the same as every other deck for that commander. It’s an infinite loop that makes decks generic good stuff that plays well with the commanders but isn’t necessarily fun to play.

      I haven’t personally ever seen one played, but I think it would be a fun commander! If I personally made one, I’d add the obvious options like the mana dorks, horse shoe crab, and Arcanis the omnipotent. I’d also run fun abilities like Beguiler of Wills and Alaundo the Seer. People are often hesitant to run it, but I’d play intruder alarm to untap all my creatures any time a creature enters, so you can tap cards galore. With so many mana dorks and untapping, I’d find outlets to spend that mana with overrun affects, finales, or copy spells (Doppelgang). I haven’t actually looked into the commander, but that’s what comes to my mind if I were to build a deck on the spot!

I run a lot of stuff that uses my artifacts as well, as well as things that make creatures on spell casts. So my win cons are generally using either noncreature artifacts and rise and shine, or creatures from young pyro and the like and pyretic charge. I tried figuring out how to make Kolaghan's second ability work in commander, but... seems borderline impossible tbh. Can't put your own cards in opponent's graveyards, can't change the name of cards in graveyards or spells on the stack, and the only card that allows you to cast a copy of a creature card in a graveyard without exiling it first is from Unfinity.

    my favorite obscure commander (that is not that obscure) but has a very strange gameplay is Hogaak, The Arisen Necropolis. Everybody is confused on why your commander is a vanilla 8/8 trampler that cant use mana to cast until you hit somebody for 24 commander damage, then proceeds to draw 20 cards and create 21 tokens killing you commander over and over on the same turn. Fun stuff.

    I love baron Bertram gray water. He's a super easy and safe command zone deck for any WB vampire deck. A lot of the normal commanders in those colors for vampires are very aggressive or very value oriented throughout the game like multiple triggers per turn or growing over time. My two favorite exceptions to this are Edgar, Charmed groom and Bertram. Both create tokens repeatedly, which is kinda more on the difficult side in those colors as for specifically vampire tokens. Then the deck will be filled with loads of vampires that are way scarier than Edgar or Bertram that will need to be dealt with like Carmen, Elena's hierophant, bloodthirsty conqueror(or any of the generic combo piece vampire creatures I know there are a few) , or the guy that forces others to sacrifice. Bert and Ed fall under the radar when those monsters are floating around. Even better, there are a few creatures that love sacrificing one vampire to protect themselves from board wipes, or the entire board like the persist guy. If you have an intangible virtue or something he's pretty nasty. Let alone an ETB put a +1/+1 counter of some sort.
    Bert comes with draw, and conditional token making but a smothering tithe absolutely rakes in vampire creatures tokens with Bert. Edgar is the safest by far being an anthem and a token maker.

    • @Unpopularmtg
      @Unpopularmtg  12 днів тому

      Love the analysis, thanks for sharing! What I do love about Bertram is that he’s not that big of a removal magnet because the limit of one per turn. If there were multiple triggers each turn, it might draw eyes, but adding one little guy to your board at a time can go unnoticed to the other card that created a token in the first place. You can also hold up interaction and dump unused mana into card draw. I haven’t built a deck yet, but want to! Do you have a deck for Bertram built?

    Like half of that (or more) is universe beyond cards, which makes me instantly uninterested.
    Honestly, it's generally not surprising why some commanders are unpopular.
    Can you build a deck with them? Yes. Throw in some of the best cards in 99 and good synergies and you don't even need the commander.
    But can this card be a build-around of some sort? That's more important question.
    Some cards just don't do enough if you build your deck around them. You'll literally have better winrate if you just throw some good-supported archetype.
    There were some cards that you can build around, but they are just overshadowed by sheer power of other cards that are more popular WITHIN the same synergy package.
    Like, Baron Bertram Graywater loses competition to every Teysa aristocrats, while it would be played just like another aristocrats deck (give or take a few cards).
    Same thing with Niv-Mizzet. I have Kess around the same synergy package you've discussed, and Kess gives access to black and she gives ability to replay Jeska's Will type of cards from the graveyard same turn you play em, which overshadows whatever carddraw you would have - and it costs 2 mana less, and technically does something once she hits the board (you can cast spell right after she enters the board as you have a priority).
    Outliers exist, I guess, like Malcolm.

    • @Unpopularmtg
      @Unpopularmtg  13 днів тому

      You’re not wrong, there is a disproportionate amount of UB cards on here. For me, I didn’t even know half of them existed because I wasn’t in the market for fallout and AC so I didnt see all the new cards as they were spoiled, then I was behind.
      And in terms of power, I also agree, most can be tied to a more powerful commander that is also more popular. I usually choose unpopular commanders because of the challenge in deck building and the personal limitation of trying to play less used cards. It feels more rewarding when I’m able to win with cards that don’t see play in every other deck
