Cold Steel has made some of the best- bar none- factory production large bowies ever. I jumped on the Cold Steel bandwagon with the first Carbon-5 Trailmasters in the early-mid 1980's.. I put micarta scales on mine, green micarta looks nice. Always enjoy the vids mate. All the best from England!
Cold Steel messed up. The Natchez Bowie has a cable tang, you don't want that. It cost $200 and they give you a plastic sheath. Lol The Frontier Bowie is FULL TANG, that's what you want. Donnie with the B. Q? Does B stand for bowie?? Lol Q? When I got my 1917 bowie, there is some kind of white powder coming out of the sheath, substantially, all over the blade. Do you know what that powder is,and how to get rid of it?? Note: I sharpened the swedge on mine to achieve that nasty "back cut" that the bowie is famous for (ref; Bill Bagwell on bowie knife fighting etc).
I admit that I have been interested in both of them. As a disagreement with regards to leather sheaths, I must disagree. My preference for a multi option, non rotting in my humid environment, sheath is unwavering. So a cheaper 1917 must also account for a new sheath in the cost.
I have both the Natchez Bowie and the 1917 Bowie along with the Cold Steel Laredo Bowie. Hard choice, but I would also choose the Natchez. What would be your preference.....San Mai, or carbon steel?
I’ve commented on other videos of yours. Just so you know, I bought the 1917 Bowie because of you. Thank you for convincing me. That being said, I have a question. I saw a review on Amazon with a photo of this knife snapped in half at the hand guard. The buyer claims it came that way, I believe it to be true because it was still in its package while broken. What do you think?
Why am I reading so many reviews on the Frontier Bowie that say its nothing more than a wall piece and that it came dull as a butter knife? Are any of these true?
The fact that the frontier Bowie held it's own against the Natchez Bowie is impressive in itself Lynn Thompson even said himself that the frontier Bowie is marketed towards people who can't afford the Natchez Bowie

Hi Donnie Is there anywhere you know of to buy a Natchez Seems as though they are hard to com across unless it’s ridiculous prices on eBay Great vids my Man
Hello Donnie. I applaud you on your video presentation on the Cold Steel Natchez and Frontier Bowie. Do you have a video giving a tutorial on how to throw a Bowie knife? I know that your video on the Frontier Bowie shows a brief clip of you throwing the bowie but I can't tell if you threw it holding the handle or the point. Thanks
I have a few videos where I explain knife throwing and even have a video on a cold steel throwing knife where I show some of my techniques but generally when throwing a large Bowie I throw from the blade
Natchez is half stick tang half cable tang the 1917 is an actual full Tang. Fighting I would go for a Natchez it's much better balanced and the cable tang absorbs more force but for an outdoor knife that might get abused the 1917 is a safer choice Just my 2 cents
Ive got both of them plus a Laredo.... Im most comfortable with the full tang as on the 1917 Frontier, just cuz, I guess. But I repeat myself... A request, could you/would you do a test on the Laredo- ive searched your video list and havent found one yet. The Laredo is one heck of a fighting knife, not sure it would be a good camp (or Donnie B) knife. It needs a diferent sheath, Im not a fan of the "belt tuck" carry. Your vids are entertaining as well as very informative. Be well, you and your family!
The Natchez is next !! You sold me on that one .... need a few more weeks . I’m such a huge fan of the Cold Steel Laredo and Trail Master San Mai ... Do you think the Natchez is better than both of those 2 ?? IYO ??
That's tough. The longer and thinner the clip point, generally, the weaker the tip. I have had no issues with mine. Of the three, I think the Natchez is far better looking and a better fighting Bowie. As a camp Bowie though, the other 2 in San Mai are hard to beat.
I'm about to buy the 1917. I love that I can slip it out of the frog when I sit down. So I don't have to undo my belt to take it off. I have a leather machete sheath like that from Costa Rica for my Ontario G.I. machete.
Like best that you used both hands.. the only way to train and fight. Question Your saying you have never sharpened these knives?? I would be afraid to use them fearing I could never, never resharpen them to factory spec. What do you say??
There's a tv show called frontier about a man raised by indans grows up into mountain man fights English soilders and other people don't know if you ever seen the tv series but it's a show to my liking and I think you would like it it has knives tomahawks war clubs and other bladed wepans the frontier knife makes me think of the tv series frontier I guess it's the name i Like the Natchez Bowie But I do prefer a full Tang knife especially for fighting, servival and heavy chopping but it looks derable good video brother Frontier 2016 tv series on Netflix Actor Jason Momoa Type this in it will take you straight to it
I have the Natch, would like to get the 1917 while Im still young enuff to enjoy it! The plastic sheath on the natch sucks, really... however for a knife of this size, a scabbard isnt totally out of place. Oh, how do you figger the natch is a "Musso-style" bowie? Curious. Whichever bowie you like, our descendants will look back at these days as the halcyon-days of blade use and development. Cold Steel definitely leads the pack in knife and market development.
Donnie B All Day I’m starting to prefer the SK-5 over the stainless. Sure, it’s vulnerable to rust, but the oiled blade, and the brass guard and wood handle just give it a more authentic Bowie knife feel.
Lets keep it real.. Cold steel uses that branded cable over a full tang for no other reason that to cut the cost of steal material and manufacturing cost. Any armourer will twll you that the nife is awesome but that lart of the design sucks and is cheap and has no purpous other than to benifit cold steal and thier benifit screws you the consumer over. Still a nice knife though...
This method has been used for many more years than any of us have lived. Why would they use it for cost reasons when it's the only model they use it on? Wouldn't they employ it more? They are known for their versatility. Full, hidden, cable... they can produce anything, any way and these two prove that. A cable tang vs a full three quarter exposed. What other big brand is doing that?
I love Bowie knives. I'm going to buy the Natches. Shock in love. Greetings from Germany. Greetings Chris

Natchez is half stick tang half cable tang the 1917 is an actual full Tang. Fighting I would go for a Natchez it's much better balanced and the cable tang absorbs more force but for an outdoor knife that might get abused the 1917 is a safer choice
Just my 2 cents
you aren't wrong
Checking back on this presentation... 4 years along now, 25000+ views and only 519 "Likes"?!? WTF, over? What's the matter with you folks???
People are lazy
Great video great knifes!
Understatement. Haha! Thanks.
Its on my wish list.
I’m sending you an email in like an hour . Interesting question ... ( in ref to the Natchez ).,. Thanks !!
@@tubes5150 ok. I'll keep an eye out
I'm about to buy the 1917. I love that I can slip it out of the frog when I sit down. So I don't have to undo my belt to take it off.
I have a leather machete sheath like that from Costa Rica for my Ontario G.I. machete.
You're going to love it
hi mr Donnie b all day, question for you sir, have you any experiance with poshland? i have a bowie on order anything at all?
I haven't bought one due to complaints of fit and finish issues and the blades not being as hard as advertised.
The ULTIMATE Warriorrrr!!! 😁
I'm an ultimate something, but it's usually followed by a word you aren't allowed to say in church. Haha
Like best that you used both hands.. the only way to train and fight.
Question
Your saying you have never sharpened these knives?? I would be afraid to use them fearing I could never, never resharpen them to factory spec. What do you say??
I have no problems bringing an edge back, these so far have just not needed it. They're awesome.
Donnie B All Day Thank you so much .. Appreciated.
Donnie can you make a video,on how to spin a Bowie.
I did. The art of knife flipping
@@DonnieBAllDay Thanks Donnie im new to your channel, and I sure like it BIG Time.
There's a tv show called frontier about a man raised by indans grows up into mountain man fights English soilders and other people don't know if you ever seen the tv series but it's a show to my liking and I think you would like it it has knives tomahawks war clubs and other bladed wepans the frontier knife makes me think of the tv series frontier I guess it's the name i
Like the Natchez Bowie
But I do prefer a full Tang knife especially for fighting, servival and heavy chopping but it looks derable good video brother
Frontier 2016 tv series on Netflix
Actor Jason Momoa
Type this in it will take you straight to it
I need to look that up
I haven’t found a Natchez for less then 300 do you see it being 200 bucks better then the frontier
That's a good question. I haven't had the need to look
Can you do a review on the Reapr Tac Bowie?
It isn't on my list, but if one comes my way, I'll dig into it.
@@DonnieBAllDay thank you!
Oh oh oh I want a Natchez .
It's awesome
I have the Natch, would like to get the 1917 while Im still young enuff to enjoy it! The plastic sheath on the natch sucks, really... however for a knife of this size, a scabbard isnt totally out of place. Oh, how do you figger the natch is a "Musso-style" bowie? Curious.
Whichever bowie you like, our descendants will look back at these days as the halcyon-days of blade use and development. Cold Steel definitely leads the pack in knife and market development.
It's styled after the Musso. Coffin grip, swept spine, long clip, raised ricasso. All traits of the Musso.
Thanks for the video I am on the fence about the 1917
I was quick to jump that fence. Love it!
Can somebody please tell me what good oil to put on my knives
Rem Oil
Pulled the trigger on the 1917 about 15 minutes ago
its awesome
Ah the ultimate question for the ultimate Bowies. Which is better? I like your choice. Someday I will have enough pennies saved to get one.
some happy makers right there.
if anything, the frontier bowie wins from an affordability standpoint.
definitely easier on the wallet
@@DonnieBAllDay have you seen the Honshu pioneer bowie, basically a copy of the cold steel frontier? be a nice video
@@ethanknight3970 I'll look
2years after🤣 but I'll get a 1917 with what stone are you sharpening ?
All this time, haven't needed a sharpening yet. Just honing with leather
Have you ever seen the San Mai III Natchez Bowie?
Absolutely. I have an O1 and another on backorder.
Donnie B All Day
I’m starting to prefer the SK-5 over the stainless. Sure, it’s vulnerable to rust, but the oiled blade, and the brass guard and wood handle just give it a more authentic Bowie knife feel.
@@DesGardius-me7gf You can't go wrong with it
The 1917bowie it S Just an killer, thé handle it S so angular but......
Its amazing.
what lmfao
How much does the1917 cost
Retail is $199 but you can find one closer to $100.
Thank you brother
I wish the natchez came with quiet sheath.
A heat gun and a little pinching with your thumb will make it silent
It's Bowie not bouy! Otherwise it was a great video thank you
@@Mauitaoist thanks, but wrong. Its well noted that Jim himself pronounced it Bewee.
Decreasing and hot vinegar will fix those shining blades...
Sure will, I just don't mind some being polished. I blue a lot of my carbon blades or sand to satin finish.
I like the Trail Master and Natchez. The Frontier is crude in ways it doesn't need to be.
It gets the job done though
I'm a lefty also.
I knew there was something right about you! Haha
@@DonnieBAllDay lol
Be careful , - you hardly pierced your foot with Frontier dropped out of the trunk .
Hitting my foot will only improve my hopping abilities.
Booop check that out man
The 1917 will animate a big man real quick. haha
Don't have any meat filled boots around? 😅
I'm wearing meat filled boots
@@DonnieBAllDay Avoid contact with Lynn Thompson.
Poor tree took its life just so you could try your little knives and make your little video
The knife looks little because I'm huge. The "tree" though is a weed that grows and multiplies. An evasive species that kills the real trees.
Gay cowboy???
Oh no thank you. I ate already.
Gay Grizzly broke back country ?
I love those little boop sounds he makes. I'd love to see a chop test video with a boop sample every time he hits something.
I'd have to call it the Betty Boop chopper challenge
