We lost another of the worlds greatest gifts in Levons passing, a simple man with a golden voice, and remarkable ability to write songs from the heart, and for the soul!! God speed Levon!!
No. I'm a 17 year old with s full time job on a dairy farm. So why don't you and the other yuppie fucks go listen to some luke Bryan while you guys give eachother reach a rounds.
I dont know who Luke Bryan is, All im saying is thats such a useless, almost condescending comment that implies other music isnt real music. I listen to everything. I love Levon. Don't belittle other artists...
real music. I'm a guitar player, but would cut off my fingers to get Levon back for 10 more years and a couple more albums. An Angel sent from heaven and a righteous man.
Who in hell gives this masterpiece a thumbs down?? 32 very unhappy folks, I’d guess...Still, how does anyone not love this track?!? All appreciation and love to Levon. I miss those Midnight Rambles. 💚
This was written by Paul Kennerley. Helms along with Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash and others appeared on Kennerley's concept album The Legend of Jesse James in 1980. This song appears as a bonus track on the 1999 reissue performed by Kennerley.
Levon was and is a teller of stories. Just like way back in ancient times. I can smell the old leather and gunpowder. I can also feel all of the goodness and spirit straight to the heart.
Love this!!!!! I'm from Helena,AR & kin to Jesse James. My fishin partner is Levon's godchild.......Pure Greatness!!!!!! I had the honor of meeting him a few times.
"Men was'a sweatin' an' tha' women shed tears, and the preacher prayed to the Lord". "We will burn yor train to cinders". Classic Levon.....he-he The Man R.I.P. Mr. Helms
The more I hear of him, the better I like him. Where did this guy hide all my life? I thought I knew music, but this dude really slipped through the cracks on me.
This is real music. After I thought that I just now saw the other comments that say the same. Feels like we know who we are and who we were. Time machine. May God have mercy on this poor old country. It was one hell of a struggle, kids.
My all-time greatest favorite train song! This is my favorite song from the Great Levon Helm.. His guttural voice seems to come from his bluesy folk rock roots.
Ive burnt so many CD 's from my legend of jesse james album for friends ive lost count,,,but always burn a train robbery as the closer. My favorite song.
david patrick do you have the 1999 release of this, that has this Song on it Lucky Ducky! ?? Caws i cant find it anywhere! so bummed.. I managed to find the previous 80s release on vinyl..
wow first time hearing that song, I was like wooooow, then I tried remembering the lyrics and couldn't find it, till today, then i HEARD THE CHORUS AND was like fuck yeah!!!!!!! Thanks For posting this Great song!!!
+KILLA whigger Would you just shut your stinking mouth! Try, if you can, to talk with a little moral value. Or, where you just raised with filthy talk!
+KILLA whigger Awwwww, poor little fella get angry? I'm really very sorry about that, slick. But hey, all is not lost, you just made my day....I crawled under your skin and for that, I'm really happy. It's really cool to watch you poor little uneducated boys spout all your filth, and you do it simply because you can't just seem to muster up enough properly educated words to express your grimy little minds. But, at least I'm happy, because I really ticked you off, and for that, I can rejoice. Too bad, you little puke.......now I'm going to report your filth, and thus.......I shall no longer see your putrid filth..........and that will tick you even more, so that makes me glad, to put the veins sticking out of your neck, to know you're gritting your teeth in pure anger, and most of all, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. Now, this is my last post to you, and as such, I shall have the last word. I'm sorry I won't see anymore of your filth, but that's life sonny boy................you have a great day now, ya hear, especially when you can calm yourself down, and know that you HAVE to take it, and you've been bested by someone smarter than you, for I won't see your dirt anymore, so, in the end..........................I WIN.............and YOU lose! Bye, bye sonny!! LOL, LOL, LOL, LOL, LOL, LOL,
First heard this song at Philmont Scout Reservation. The staff said, "This is a song about death and desolation." Really surprised me, because they started with a comical skit. They ended up balancing comic skits with tragic songs like this.
Fun fact, while Jesse died hiding out in anonymity Frank had turned himself in. Every jurisdiction that laid came to him, put him on trial. No where could they find a jury that would convict him, that was how much the banks and railroad companies were hated. He lived to a ripe old age and died a free man.
Hé Levon I made a great soup tonight with a wunderfull soupstone (Dr. Hook). It just needs a night on the fire to take the whole taste. Thanks a lot man! 🥁 See you at dinner.....🎶
There is a different version of this on the Legend of Jesse James soundtrack that is really good as well ...still by Levon Helm...Just sounds a little more upbeat by a small margin.
I've been searching, but I have no idea what it's called. That song was definitely one of my favorites, though. I'll send a link if I can find a video.
The full moon touched the cold steel lines The rail bed was frozen with ice In the distance an engine was keepin' good time The steam whistle moaned just twice Down in the cut past the old trestle bridge Twelve fine horses stood Masked men shivered in the cold on the ridge Not far from the Glendale woods The brass lamp shone from the swayin' train When the driver saw the red light Her iron brakes sparked like silver rain And the metals screamed through the night The baggage man peered out to look for the fault When fear froze up his heart He was starin' down the barrel of an army colt That threatened to tear him apart We will burn your train to cinders so throw the money on down Open up your damned express car and jump down to the ground But we won't touch that old Pullman she's Southern and they claimed They ain't offered no reward for Frank and Jesse James Frank and Jesse James In long soldiers coats frayed with years Quickly they scrambled aboard The men was a-sweatin' and the women shed tears And a preacher prayed to the Lord When they opened the safe there was nothing for them So they strolled down through the train What a miserable sight, these desperate men Robbin' old folks for their gold watch chains We will burn your train to cinders so throw the money on down Open up your damned express car and jump down to the ground But we won't touch that old Pullman she's Southern and they claimed They ain't offered no reward for Frank and Jesse James Frank and Jesse James Now some say the devil had taken his soul Some say his spirit survived But we all know he was nothin' but a Missouri farm boy Just fightin' to stay alive High above that railroad bed On a ridge where the pines grow tall If you listen to the wind there's a ghost of a chance You can still hear ole Jesse call We will burn your train to cinders so throw the money on down Open up your damned express car and jump down to the ground But we won't touch that old Pullman she's Southern and they claimed They ain't offered no reward for Frank and Jesse James Frank and Jesse James
Looking for Correct Lyrics? First Line is not "Foreman" its "Fullmoon" Later...its "..touch that old pullman, she's southern and they claim.../ My opinion but it sounds pretty clear to me...
I'm not sure, but I believe that Levon is referring to the fact that Jesse and Frank James were Missouri bushwackers, in a time and place where lines were drawn coldly between bushwackers and jayhawks. So because the Pullman was coming from the South-filled with southerners-it was not to be touched. No reward for Frank And Jesse James, meaning Southern men kept to their own when drawing lines during these post-civil war insurgency times.
It could also be that Pullman (the company that made these cars) was a seperate company from the the Northern Railway and even though the railroad had hefty rewards out for the James boys the Pullman Company was southern and never offered no reward. So maybe betwen the two of these replies you can figure it out for sure and let us know.....
Missouri rock-a-bye The dinner "dessert's coming." Rattlesnakes feel The women in the background The shadow....Mason Dixon Country rock The t'wine in the story. Build up... Here it comes... The back of my head Like a prayer The women and that tambourine Next... I don't want it to end. One more time. Lord!!!!! That one 10!!!!!!!

Take it easy on those with negative opinions. But since they're all on parole already, they go back to prison if they mess up one more time.

im so glad he got this song in the can before he passed. there is a weakness in the vocals that draws a tear, but the subject matter and the delivery.
Aint In It For My Health has to b one of the most honest docs put forth by a living (at that time, r.i.p.) legend. Much Respect ✌🏻
My god, i feel like im there getting robbed by Frank and Jesse listening to this. Masterfully written and sang
One of my biggest regrets...never seeing Levon live...peace brother.
Dylan is pure gold, but Levon was a 100-karat diamond. RIP Mr. Helm, you have won it.
First heard this song at Philmont Scout Reservation. The staff said, "This is a song about death and desolation." Really surprised me, because they started with a comical skit. They ended up balancing comic skits with tragic songs like this.
This is amazing. Such feeling and power
Love it
Levon is the best !
Nice piece 👍
LEVON FOREVER
Yes, there is a 1980 version, this is from the 2007 Levon Helm Dirt Farmer.
Fun fact, while Jesse died hiding out in anonymity Frank had turned himself in. Every jurisdiction that laid came to him, put him on trial. No where could they find a jury that would convict him, that was how much the banks and railroad companies were hated. He lived to a ripe old age and died a free man.

This would be such a good song for a Red Dead Redemption game.
You know, there's a fine line to between a criminal and a revolutionary: "Open up your damned express car"
There is a different version of this on the Legend of Jesse James soundtrack that is really good as well ...still by Levon Helm...Just sounds a little more upbeat by a small margin.
Made my day.
he was hiding behind the drum kit in the group The Band who were Bob Dylans Back up Band

That threatened TO TARE ANYONE APART ROAR

Ride On Jesse......Ride On Son !
I just got back from Philmont, what about the ax song could you find it?
To kool
A PREACHER PRAYED TO THE LORD
enough said
THATS WHY IT SAYS THE FARMER FIRST DIRT FARMER
The full moon touched the cold steel lines
The rail bed was frozen with ice
In the distance an engine was keepin' good time
The steam whistle moaned just twice
Down in the cut past the old trestle bridge
Twelve fine horses stood
Masked men shivered in the cold on the ridge
Not far from the Glendale woods
The brass lamp shone from the swayin' train
When the driver saw the red light
Her iron brakes sparked like silver rain
And the metals screamed through the night
The baggage man peered out to look for the fault
When fear froze up his heart
He was starin' down the barrel of an army colt
That threatened to tear him apart
We will burn your train to cinders so throw the money on down
Open up your damned express car and jump down to the ground
But we won't touch that old Pullman she's Southern and they claimed
They ain't offered no reward for Frank and Jesse James
Frank and Jesse James
In long soldiers coats frayed with years
Quickly they scrambled aboard
The men was a-sweatin' and the women shed tears
And a preacher prayed to the Lord
When they opened the safe there was nothing for them
So they strolled down through the train
What a miserable sight, these desperate men
Robbin' old folks for their gold watch chains
We will burn your train to cinders so throw the money on down
Open up your damned express car and jump down to the ground
But we won't touch that old Pullman she's Southern and they claimed
They ain't offered no reward for Frank and Jesse James
Frank and Jesse James
Now some say the devil had taken his soul
Some say his spirit survived
But we all know he was nothin' but a Missouri farm boy
Just fightin' to stay alive
High above that railroad bed
On a ridge where the pines grow tall
If you listen to the wind there's a ghost of a chance
You can still hear ole Jesse call
We will burn your train to cinders so throw the money on down
Open up your damned express car and jump down to the ground
But we won't touch that old Pullman she's Southern and they claimed
They ain't offered no reward for Frank and Jesse James
Frank and Jesse James
Thanks very much for the lyrics.
Looking for Correct Lyrics? First Line is not "Foreman" its "Fullmoon" Later...its "..touch that old pullman, she's southern and they claim.../ My opinion but it sounds pretty clear to me...
@Foxy Gaming Listen to Eric Church sing it on the "Love For Levon Tribute" I am guessing he made damn sure of the correct lyrics before that show,,,,
what does the lyric "they ain't offer no reward for frank and jesse james" mean, and why wouldn't they touch the pullman because of this?
I'm not sure, but I believe that Levon is referring to the fact that Jesse and Frank James were Missouri bushwackers, in a time and place where lines were drawn coldly between bushwackers and jayhawks. So because the Pullman was coming from the South-filled with southerners-it was not to be touched.
