  • Today, We put Simonize Glass Coat Through the Apex Detail Review Process! Glass Coat is offered at dealerships at exorbitant prices.Lets compare to a coating I enjoy. A Ceramic Coating (such as Opti-Coat Pro, C.Quartz, and Ceramic Pro) is a liquid polymer that is applied by hand to the exterior of a vehicle. The coating chemically bonds with the vehicle’s factory paint, creating a layer of protection. A Ceramic Coating creates a permanent or semi-permanent bond with a vehicle’s paint, meaning that it does not wash away or break down and does not require repeated application every few months.

Brian, Thank you so much for prepping me to care for my new car (on order from Germany). By the time it gets here in August, I will be ready to care for it like you take care of your customers.
I've had my 328xi for 7 years (bought it when it was 5 y.o.) and I practice what you teach on it. People are amazed at how great it looks for 12 y.o. paint and it has made me fall in love with my ride once again. It's easy to get complacent with your baby in the passage of time as it loses its luster, but it's easy to keep it like new with your instruction. I will, in all likelihood, step up to your product lines when my new baby comes in. My RS6 Avant will be spectacular thanks to you. Continued success, good friend.

My wife got her new Hyunday Tucson "Simonized" by the dealer back in 2014 when she bought it. I think she paid around $800ish for it. This was right about the time I started to get interested in detailing. I have no idea about the quality of the product other than that it did a decent job of locking in the dealer installed scratches on the black paint. We didn't know any better back then and it was just the way it was. We have since wised up, and the Tucson became our first major experiment in paint correction. We're hardly pros, but the car still looks better today than when my wife drove it off the lot five years ago.

We used Ming protection packages and enviroshield at our Holden dealer here in South Australia... I didn't mind the products and we always made sure they were applied correctly .
The biggest problem is knowing the customer is probably not going to look after their car properly or be misled by the salesperson who tells them it's "ok to use a car wash" or they don't need to use any car care products because it's protected.. I'm sure we've all heard these sorts of stories .
Our dealership closed in 2011 , six years before Holden closed its factory here . The factory was 45 minutes from our dealership and i swear sometimes you could smell the fresh paint on the car's.

I can state with 99% certainty that the dealership skips all the prep procedures and goes straight to the coating. There is zero possibility that a dealer would spend the time to perform a correction. There is an equal chance that the dealer detailer would even know what paint correction is.

Friend of mine was offered the Simonize coating on her Accord "for free." She agreed to it and the dealer told her "Okay we'll apply it and roll the car out!" They 'installed' it and out came the car... in 15 minutes! Amazed, I had her bring the car over the next week and the whole car sheeted water as if there was nothing on it. Doubt they even applied it. After seeing these results... maybe they did? Either way I think I made the right choice in polishing it off and applying some Cquartz.

I detail on the side and work with CarPro and Gyeon coatings all the time, but as my legal part time job I work at a dealer in their detail department (Currently in college). We used to offer Xzilon as our "protection package" which did little to nothing for the paint. Most of the time it would be just sloppily thrown on, not like it mattered, and looked like junk after. Our new stuff is a sprayable "ceramic" that we apply wet to the car, to save time of course. It is even more of a joke than Xzilon, however the carpet sealant and vinyl conditioner seem to be ok...and I mean only ok at best. The best thing we do for the paint is dry deliveries with Aqua Glow from M&G, which actually lasts a few washes and beads up really well, yet when I bring my car in the bay to clean I always bring my own stuff, reload, hydrate, etc. I do have a local dealer here in Bethlehem, Pa that apparently sends cars out for Ceramic Pro gold packages for their warranty, but I'm not sure how true that could be. It really makes my side detailing feel great however, when I go from running a car through a old and destructive car wash to doing a 3 bucket was andfull correction at home.

I bought a demo truck with 5k miles on it "new", so basically only the dealer washed it and there are swirl marks and scratches all over it. Still got a great deal so I'm not mad about it, but obviously dealerships have no idea what they're doing, they just do what looks good short term.

    • @batmon26

not all dealerships are like that, just remember those detailers are under pressure to produce. u buy a car and they have to flip it in about a hour. who knows if that car was ever re cleaned after the 5k miles that it was rented to. a hour for a full detail with a 2 stage paint correction is almost impossible

I have zero confidence with regards to any detail related products/services that the dealerships try to push during paper signing process. When I took delivery of my brand new BMW 540i (G30), I TOLD them NO need to wash/wax/detail my new car during delivery process as they (dealerships) tend to use very “low-end” products and charge extremely “high-end” prices.....not interested in that PERIOD. After the delivery, I did my own FULL detailing project using ALL very high-end (enthusiast) products and equipment that does not even (come close) or equate to $800-$1200 that many dealerships are changing. I like to think that my own work is far far superior than the dealerships’ so-called detail department.

All I can say is I has 2 vehicles coated with it in 2012 on 2 brand new vehicles and it lasted right around 6-7 years. Kept both of them free from swirls, etching etc despite mainly using a good quality automatic wash especially in the winter. At best, for most of their lives they got 1, maybe 2 top coats per year. Considering I paid $500 per new vehicle it was money well spent considering they did the interior and exterior and it came with a 7-year warranty - if anything happened to the paint over that time, or a stain happened in the interior or the leather discolored, they would have owned it. In fact, I had to put it to the test. Some minor rust happened on the inside of the bottom of the tailgate lip and they took care of it. Depending on your dealership they reapply for free after 6 years for cars that were new when applied.
I Can't say if they have since cheapened the coatings or not or just not kept up with the changes but back then, ceramic coatings were largely unknown. According to the History Channel's Modern Marvels show, Simoniz was the 1st to invent them ua-cam.com/video/ji1GG4O9l1U/v-deo.html .

Awesome video and thanks for shareing it with us Brian!
Very interesting to see this comparison. And your buddy is a great dealer at the dealership to even get you to test this out. It's a great customer service to really evaluate how their coatings they offering is when it comes to the performance from them. Even an one year coating like the Carpro Cquartz lite would be a good option to offer the customers with and of course reasonable priced for that. Something that even a little pricey but you get many applications out of it as a proffessional detailer or a dealership with a year or so longevity from it. Is the Polish Angel Viking Shield and not the Viking Coat. You know both how easy they are to apply and the looks from them is awesome. And you get a whole lot of vehicals coated with the Viking Shield. Just that's it's developed in Sweden and actually not long from where I live it must be awesome LOL. Jokeing aside if I where to have a business I would get a closer look at the cost it would be for me and what I could sell it for. And those numbers I think would be pretty good.
For full blown certified ceramic coatings a dealership could be able to be authorised to this should not be any problems with it or?

Tony Mattisson maybe I’m cynical but I don’t think any dealership really cares about how their coating stacks up to any other coating, so long as they can pocket as much money possible on every car sold. I honestly feel they’re more than happy to pull the wool over the eyes of every customer that walks through their doors, it’s not about customer service to them, but how to get the customer to serve them!

He did tell me that what I have is not available to detailers and is only available to Dealerships. It did do a great job and is guaranteed for the Life of the car. My concern is how long it really does last. I go through car washs quite often but only get the lowest cost wash since I do have this treatment. I probably would not get this option again since I can get my car detailed once a year for $125.00.

I fell for the dealer sold Glass Coat on my most recent car as I hadn't gotten in to really understanding detailing at the time. My biggest issue with the whole dealer installed option regardless of the quality of the individual product is that (at least in my case) there was no prep whatsoever done. I mean I'm in the middle of signing my paperwork with the finance manager when he "sold" me the Glass Coat so I asked him "Is this something I need to schedule an appointment to have done" he was like "No we will do it right now while you are signing paperwork and waiting for the final prep to take the car". Even not knowing then what I know now that seemed like it was not enough time to do it right. So I know there was no real paint prep done. The car had been sitting on the dealer lot from Oct 2016 to May 2017 through wintry weather in DE so there were plenty of scratches on the paint from brooming and brushing snow off the car. All that crap got "locked" in by the Glass Coat. In the end a year after the purchase I took the car to a professional detailing shop to get a 2 step paint correction and 3 coats of CQuartz UK 3.0 done ended up paying $1800 for that so in the end I spent $2500 to have the car in essence coated twice. Based on my experience alone I would never opt for the dealer applied coating.

I have applied hundreds of applicants of perma-plate and another brand I cannot remember. They are not ceramic coatings I tell people now that the best part of these coatings offered by perma-plate or comparable ones is that the warranty is the best part of them. The coatings won’t prevent a lot of different damages that occur to your paint but when in fact the clear coat fails, the warranty is worth a new paint job.

When I took it back to the dealer to file a claim they said “we put it on your car but there’s no warranty for it!” So what they’re putting on there is a total lie! PermaPlate does their advertisement where they spray paint the hood and light it on fire and then use their product to wipe it off. So now I got to do it myself! If I would’ve known it was an inferior product I would’ve just stripped it off and put on a ceramic coating or something similar!

We did get it for my wife's Matrix and it looks better than mine, but it is 4 years younger and it was in a garage for the first 6 years of its life. We never waxed or did anything to our cars other than washing them, specially in the winter (we live in PA) and detail it ourselves twice a year. So I don't think it has made that much difference. Funny thing is her upholstery looks a lot worse than mine and she allowed eating in the car much more than me.

Yeah, I noticed that move also.
The product Apex sells has a two year warranty, The Simonize Glass Coat product he's not authorized to apply or been trained to prep and and apply has a 7 year warranty and Lifetime warranty, with no deductible, whatever "Lifetime" means, when installed by an authorized company.
I'll just bet Brain's own products out perform both products here.
One doesn't have to pay the higher prices that auto dealerships charge, for any extras, as any authorized detailer can install it, and charge less than dealers do.
To ensure 100% removal of any ceramic coating requires abrasion of wet sanding, even compound may not remove it all, let alone a spray chemical.

I’ve used it , at least I applied it. Looks ok but nobody seems to know how long it lasts. The Stealership I worked at made a big deal about the product like it was a real coating and offer a warranty with it.
Super costly considering you can buy the product on eBay for like $20 US. I’ll say this. Applied it to my car and didn’t get 3 months out of it. Not complete garbage but it won’t last 4 months .

    • @billysunsteelfriendstransa8843

Yep you can by it at on ebay, provided it really is the produce, and even if it is it will not come with the non-deductible warranty.
Also, you are paying any company that applies the product, for all the prep work that's required before the product the product and the application of the product, as well as, the non-deductible warranty that comes with it. Even new cars have paint defects and require the prep work.
Now I know dealerships always charge more, but there are authorized detailers that charge less than auto dealerships.

Now here's the question: Do you think they are still worth it if they come with a 6-year warranty and will re-apply if it fails within that time? I was personally convinced by the warranty to repair any scratches, dings, stains or tears (interior) for 6 years. I live in Boston. It would be a miracle to not get scuffs or minor scratches; my last car (had for 10 years) kept getting mystery scratches that drove me mad; very light but never had this issue before moving here a year ago. Hoping the warranty is legit, and one way to find out. Like anyone reading this, I care for my car very well and will be sure to keep the warranty intact. Worst-case scenario I was swindled out of 900 bucks and it's coated for a couple years before I pay a solid body shop to polish the remnants off and apply a better coating I guess; live and learn.

These coating have to cure or your defeating the whole purpose of the product. I run a Reconditioning Center that does all the detailing and Reconditioning for Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Mazda and Nissan and I can tell you we do not use cheap stuff for our Coatings. We use Jade, System X, Surpass Coatings as well as P&S Inspiration depending on the customers wants and budget. Our coatings on New Cars alone is a 2 day process from Start to Finish. Used Cars can be as much as 4-5 days depending on paint correction levels required. Of course it might have something to do with pride in our work and the fact that we service high end dealerships and clients as opposed to servicing mid range domestic cars. If you want quality out of dealership applied coatings then dont go to these domestic and budget brand dealerships that care more about number of units moved then they do about the car and the ownership experience.
