- Our favorites tv characters, fired, gone, left for dead at the height of their career. Somethings just not right. These were the most beloved shows of all time, with a cast of wonderful and relatable characters. There seemed to be one character these shows had in common. An unassuming star, fan favorite that one day, vanished into thin air or sometimes worse simply replaced by a worse version. We'd argue these cast members should have had more screen time but maybe thats why they were thrown off the ship. Tales of astronomical salaries, on air scandals drama, secret feuds affairs and those that just didn't want to be in the limelight anymore, these arethe stories of those who left at the top.

I cannot say the same for everyone in this video...........but Dick York was a stand up guy. And deserved better.
Dick York was my favorite Darren, by far.

Did anyone else notice that the narrator said Dick York passed away on February 2nd 1992 and yet the headstone says February 20th?

The photo you have is of Radar O'Reily. He was not killed off the show MASH. He was shipped home safely. Col. Blake died when the plane he was flying home on was shot down. No other main characters were killed off, though Hawkeye went nuts when a baby on the bus he was on was killed to keep it quiet.

Dick York quit because of his health. He had back problems after a serious fall and his health deteriorated from there when he got emphysema. Suzanne Somers got fired because demanded more money
Dick York's back injury occurred on the set while filming the movie They Came to Cordura (1959) with Gary Cooper and Rita Hayworth, he suffered a permanent, disabling back injury. In York's own words, "Gary Cooper and I were propelling a handcar carrying several 'wounded' men down the railroad track. I was on the bottom stroke of this sort of teeter-totter mechanism that made the handcar run. I was just lifting the handle up as the director yelled 'cut!' and one of the 'wounded' cast members reached up and grabbed the handle. Now, instead of lifting the expected weight, I was suddenly, jarringly, lifting his entire weight off the flatbed - 180 pounds or so. The muscles along the right side of my back tore. They just snapped and let loose. And that was the start of it all: the pain, the painkillers, the addiction, the lost career.
Suzanne's Husband was greedy. He ruined her career.
She was asking for equal pay. She took a stand and she lost. Maybe she played the dumb blond too well. She should have received equal pay.

Killed off means the character they played was no longer on the show or was replaced by another actor. Not that the character actually died though obviously happens to some. Is simply a term used in media and theatrical Productions.
There was nothing wrong with Susann wanting the same salary as John Ritter’ Joyce should have got it too.
The show floundered without Suzanne. She should have gotten the same money...but it was the 70's, when women weren't allowed to get a credit card without a man's permission and women were paid less because men had a family to support.
Again, it wasnt the pay it was her demands for a cut of the show's profits.

James Garner. His “Rockford” character seemed like he’d be an awesome uncle to have. No doubt he’d tell you what a dumbazz you were for screwing up, but he’d help you with the trouble you got in, then be stand by you when you faced the consequences. I’d seen somewhere where he had a really bad childhood; hoping he found some peace.

Did anyone notice Joyce Dewitt was always wearing either tights or pantyhose? She refused to work bare-legged. This caused conflict between her and the show's producers & it endeared her to hosiery manufacturers, and she became the spokeswoman for L'eggs pantyhose in the late 1970s.
i live in az and i learned really quickly that panty hose and hot dry weather does not mix. i felt like i was walking in panty hose full of water.
@@lauragardner7210 That's weird, I've always worn pantyhose on stage behind my drums playing 2 to 4 hours per gig and, even though I'd be sweating like a pig (my leotard was soaked), my pantyhose stayed almost completely dry. If they GOT wet, it only took about 2 to 5 minutes for them to dry. They were a HUGE help to me, keeping the sweat from my legs getting onto my arms and hands and making it impossible to hold my sticks! I nearly always wore No Nonsense so, maybe they made them different from other brands.

I was in my 30’s when my spinal diseases started hitting me. Then shoulders, wrists, knees, hips, but not my ankles? Inherited radiation ☢️
I get it and I get him. You want to work but you can’t without medication. You don’t want the medication so you wean off it and go through hell. You can’t work because you need the drugs to work but you’re not going to take them cause it starts the cycle again.
I know his pain and he was still a very kind man until his death. That shows huge compassion and kindness from a suffering man. 😔 ❤
BRAVO sweetheart ! i concur with all you said ,i fell under opiums spell in my early years after many long probs i stopped only too find my body suffering many DIFFERANT ill effects {mind and body} for the last 25-30 yrs i no longer abuse {get hi} but take as prescribed a LEGAL amount {as far as state driving laws} for severe pain , im told i should,and could legal wise take more BUT iv learned a bit of pain and suffering are good for the soul {attitude} more power to you !!

I have refused opioid injections for almost 25 years now but breakthrough pain makes it necessary for opioid tabs. I live with pain like you. We got to. The alternative is total addiction and death! I live at Oxenford on the Gold Coast in Queensland Australia and Christmas night, they’re now saying it was a Tornado hit us at 10:30pm. We don’t get them normally. Our fences our down and roof damage but we are all ok at our house. Our neighbours are great, no fence so lucky we are friends!

My big 40 kg American Staffy who may look a bit like a huge pit Bull much prefers the air conditioning and won’t run away, I’m just scared someone might steal him. My 18 yrs old shaved Ragdoll cat has a cosy blanket on the end of my bed. His fur is growing back quickly. Too hot in Oz for all that fur!

Dick York died on February 20, not February 2, 1992. The date is shown on the gravestone in the video.
The scene in MASH that Alan would have been talking about was the scene in which radar has to drop his pants and he couldn't and Alan would keep laughing
Yep! I remember seeing the outtakes reel where that particular scene had at least 5 or 6 takes.

My mom was a huge James Garner fan. She went into labor with me and refused to go to the hospital until Maverick was over. I was born 35 minutes later. She made it to the delivery room on a gurney and they were cutting her clothes off as I was being born. Later, she and I bonded as we watched The Rockford Files.
Heartbreaking to see how some sitcom stars met tragic fates on their shows. Life can be so unpredictable!
My favorite would be a tie between Dick York and James Garner. They were both really good actors and had a real talent for comedy.
Can't believe the twists and turns these shows took. The unpredictability is what makes them memorable.

The pants episode refers to the time Hawkeye was officer of the day and radar was getting undressed and every time he started to take off his pants he thought Hawkeye was looking then he dropped them an a lady was there to see a Dr... And there was Radar with his pants around his ankles
Hands down Dick York was my favorite actor and Bewitched was my favorite t.v. show. What a shame he never fully recovered from that back injury.

Every time I see Radar on MASH, I can’t help checking how Gary would cover up his bad left hand - like carrying clipboards, file folders, hand in pocket.
Back when “Friends” was still in production, there came a time when salary negations took place. At the time, the cast settled on parity, which was very unusual at that time, and on its face, looked rather like blackmail. It took me several years to understand that this was good business. It bothered me, however, that this would certainly result in cancellation because of the sheer cost involved.
Time went on and this gambit became more common, leading to a better take for the actors, but still presented cost problems for the network. This system is still working itself out and I now understand that it is business as usual. Frankly, I think it’s a good sign that the members of a cast and the networks can work together in this fashion.

@@trevorjennings72 Hello, Trevor. I’m doing well, thank you for asking. I did end up contracting COID a year ago but suffered none of the complications I so dreaded. I was actually diagnosed with COVID when I was briefly hospitalized for something else.
Sorry, but Friends DID NOT end due to high costs or the cast salaries. It was the hugest and most watched sitcom generating a fortune for all involved.
I saw an interview with Jennifer Anniston who said she felt guity for the end of Friends. She was getting more and more big screen movie rolls and just couldn't juggle it all. She said spoke to the other cast who relunctantly agreed without her, the show would lose popularity. So the show they ended on a high. She told the producers a year before the show ended and the writers had a year to work the script so the ending seemed perfect.

i actually grew up with a guy who's great aunt was laura ingalls wilder. he brought in proof and everything. he's a descendant of the wilder family. she was his dad's favorite aunt . there are even pictures of them together.

Wow so having worked in media and heard both the terms killed off and written out used, in the same scenarios plus learning in my media qualification must all have been wrong then. I suggest you pull your head from yours and realise production companies and the media use both to describe it.
Alright some clarification here as I don't like nastiness and have thought about it. You are thinking about scripts and reports. Killed off is a generic term in production, much like theatre has generic terms covering the different things that lead to the same place. In this particular meaning killed off = an end. It doesn't just mean a character or actor. It can mean the end to a situation in a story for instance. Along the lines of it's a wrap. On to the next. I took from my experiences that being what the title meant. Possibly the OP didn't. Possibly also we live in different places in the world and different phrases or slang are used. Anyway let's be compassionate adults and learn. Far better than negativity.

Clearly the fact that they couldn't replace her successfully attests to that. Why is it when women stand up for their right to be treated as equal to men they are called greedy?

Don Knotts is a comic genius and he was good on anything, even Mr. Furly, but he’ll always be remembered as Barney Fife, who is often voted the most memorable television character in TV history. Barney became an icon for the overzealous cops. I have used the name many times when encountering one of those kind of cops. I’ve said, “We’re dealing with a Barney Fife here..”. That’s when you’ve encapsulated a type of person, especially a cop. Knotts did it brilliantly. He wasn’t really supposed to have that big of a part when the show began. After all, it was called the Andy Griffith Show, but it didn’t take long for Knotts to shine though and upstage everyone.
Andy Griffith was considered to be Barney Fife but Andy Griffith felt Mr.Knox would be a better actor for the part and he was right.
Don Knox ruined Three's Company. He never stopped playing the Barren Phif character. Even on Mattlock, he still played Barney Phiff. Sickening!
No, Andy Griffith said he also started out as a similar type of character Knotts played. But he quickly discovered the show was better when he played more of a straight man to Knott's comedy. He was right.
Watch the first season and you'll see Griffith's character change from heavy hick to a more responsible man-with-the-solutions. He was still very funny, but he knew when to push Knotts to the front. Theirs was a great pairing.

Mr Furley was the best. I have always wanted a landlord like him. Mr Roper was good too, but Furley was a friend to them. He even helped Jack pay for his Bistro by lending him the money.
Dick York was a good person, he never lost the memory of poverty and wanted to help, so he is my favorite as a person.

These stars may have left the sitcoms, but they're very much alive in our memories. The impact is everlasting.
Loved Dick York's work! This may be a slightly niggly item, but I would beg to differ that Dick York was "addicted" to opioids. Rather, he grew "dependent" on them for pain relief. "Addiction" suggests that he sought them out for pleasure.
I never like Little House that much, but my favorite character was Nelly Olsen. I liked that she was bad, it made her seem more real than the picture perfect Ingels family. The books were great and I felt the show did a disservice to the books. But, I can't say it was a bad show, it was too moralistic for me. I preferred The Waltons, because the characters were written and portrayed more realistically. Little House's style of drama patterned after Bonanaza, and probably was pitched as a show of LIttle Joe and his own family, at least in terms of how the audience would perceive it after just one year Bonanza had left NBC.
Discussing the 'then and now' of these characters really puts into perspective the impact they had on the audience.
The reason Little House resembled Bonanza is because Michael Landon was an executive producer on the show, and he also wrote many episodes, some of which were Bonanza episodes retooled for Little House.
This video contradicts many past reporting that Gary Burghoff and producers both agreed it was time to leave MASH. He had become toxic on set. He no longer wanted to continue, and cast\crew didn't want to work with him. It is revisionist history to suggest he was offered an increase in millions to continue, when producers were unlikely to renew his contract. The situation was "You have the options to quit, or be fired". The character was written out either way. Everybody involved with the production were glad to have him gone, including Burghoff. Of course, over time nobody involved with the show is going to trash talk each other over stuff that happened many decades ago, so if they say anything, it is the good memories, not the bad.
This is the story I've read too, and I think it's probably closer to the truth. I read that he was actually quite the jerk.
Personally, I cheered when he left MASH, and thought the show was vastly improved by his absence. A forty-something year old man still trying to pretend to be some clueless farm boy was not only ridiculous, but detracted from the direction the show had taken. And I'm fully aware this isn't a popular opinion ha ha.
The emotional investment we have in sitcom characters is a testament to the writing and acting skills at play. Truly a rollercoaster ride!

I guess out of all of them I’m a sucker for Gary Burghoff. Though after hearing about Dick York I like him far better than I did before. He sounds like a wonderful man.

Joyce Dewitt wasn't even replaced on her show. She just didn't get to be on the spin off show. I'm not even going to bother with the rest of this if your first entry is so wrong.

The shows today are all prime time Soap Operas, like Grays Anatomy.
They were all some of my favorite shows when I was a child. I'm so sorry that some of the actor's lives ended in such dire straits. Rest their souls.
Susanne Sommers was the Kardashian of the late 70s. Hello Thigh Master:) She DEFINATELY deserved a massive raise. I can appreciate the show not wanting to pay her the same as John Ritter(it was the 70s) but they should have AT LEAST paid her 2/3rd or even half of what John was paid and kept her on.

Have a soft spot for Joyce DeWitt, I was around the age of 10 or 11 and suffering the grips of puberty, I would watch Threes Company and was very fond of Janet Joyce"s character, at a time when most young men would be turned on by the ditzy blond I chose Janet as my television muse, (RIP)

I am currently 59 years old and all of the shows that you are speaking of in the series are shows that my family watched. Was raised in a fairly lower middle-class family, but we were very wholesome and enjoyed our family time together. I miss a lot of these shows so much.one TV series I would definitely be interested in finding out more about is Hill Street Blues.

Radar’s drumming skills: he was shown not to be holding the drum sticks correctly. For either a studio drum kit or for a marching band. Both accounts were wrong.

I also recall in The Brady Bunch episode guest starring Joe Namath in which Bobby tells the number to return his call starting with 555 in another episode their was another Ph.#3 given and not starting as 555 I saw this in a Trivia Book of which I can't think of the name of right now.
I always like Mr. Roper much more than Mr. Furley. But of course a lot of the reason for that was his bickering with Mrs. Roper.

That is interesting in regards to Jamie Farr's comment about Gary Burghoff...because on an Entertainment Tonite Weekend special, they did a behind-the-scenes look at MASH and Jamie Farr said "We loved Radar, just hated Gary." The Late Larry Linville (Frank Burns) also has some words in regards to Gary Burghoff's reported tardiness to the set many times...he said "Gary would say he got caught in traffic due to where he lived, So I told him then just move."
James Garner: Something that a lot of people don't know is James Garner was a very talented race car driver. Professional race car driver Masten Gregory was an advisor for the 1966 film, "Grand Prix", and said Garner could have been professional.
Killed off characters means the character died, you are talking about characters that were either fired or left the show.
The media and theatrical productions use both the terms of written out or killed off to describe a character who is no longer on a show or an actor who was replaced. It doesn't mean the character died though some obviously do.
Mclean Stevenson's character, col. blake, was killed off
Norman Fell wasn't kicked off Three's Company, he went to a spin-off called The Ropers that didn't do very well and was canceled.
DONNA (Eily Mae Clampette) Douglass wasn't killed off on the Beverly Hillbillies
The theme from the Rockford Files was a top ten radio hit peaking at ten in 1975.
The original mom from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air was replaced, very jarringly I might add, with someone who didn't look anything like her.

I preferred Mr.Roper He was the best and when he got replaced by Mr.Furley, I lost interest.
Don was overacting, I did not think he was funny, he was dumb. My second favoured show was Bewitched.

Rockford is my dad’s favorite show! I grew up on it, and James Garner is his favorite actor.
Dick Sargent was the original choice for Darren but turned it down in favor of another short-lived sitcom.
The Rockford Files theme song was the first time I called a radio station and made a request I think about 20 times 14CFUN

In the final season of FRIENDS, each cast member got 1 million dollars PER EPISODE. Can you believe it? One didn't earn more than the other. They were such good true friends that they said they wouldn't do the show unless they all got paid the same.
it's according to an A&E Documentary that Dick Sargent was the first actor up for the role of Darren Stephens but was unavailable and so that's how Dick York got it but then Dick Sargent got to succeed Dick York in the role and there are mixed reviews some saying he was a good successor others saying it wasn't the same but I even know of someone who thought that they were the same and even thought that it was that the same actor got a haircut.But then was told by some that the first one had to leave for some reason. But also, just imagine if Dick Sargent wasn't unavailable at first and would get to be in the entire 8 season run of the show?

Let me get this straight. Dick York and his wife were kind hearted and wouldn't evict tenants but got into trouble financially with the bank. Then he responds by helping others. I THINK THAT SAYS A HECK OF A LOT ABOUT THE CHARACTER OF THE MAN!!

Your pants/outtakes story from MASH is insanely complicated. I don't know WHY you bring up the movie -- neither Alan Alda nor "Col. Potter" were in that movie, although Gary Burghoff was. That Alda tweet may well be a reference to that scene between Radar and Col. Potter, but that scene took place in the series and it has nothing to do with the movie. For the record, Alan Alda has a great podcast and in at least one episode, he hosted something of a MASH reunion that included Loretta Swit, Jamie Farr, Mike Farrell, and Gary Burghoff.
So we got Radar, Mr. Roper and Ellie May. I didn't see her in the video?? WHY?
