Years ago, while camping, on a Sunday morning in New York State, I made contact with a Preacher on the island of Jamaica. This was with a 4 watt cb radio on channel 17. 😁 Nice setup. Really enjoy your videos. 73.
Back in 1992-1993, I dx to the island of Antellies From northern Most NY on almost a daily basis. Most times it was 12pep or so. The kid on the other end never ran more than a mobile SSB Uniden 12 pep and was using a 102" steel whip. Unreal skip for a bunch of years back then. 73's NY202
It is called the "skip". An atmospheric anomaly where the radio waves travel up into atmosphere, bouce off and come back down in different random locations. It only happens when conditions are just right.

Mower junkie are you getting any skip today??? Finally got me a cobra 148 got side band radio I'm in marion virginia and have a 2 tube linear as well 73s!!!what's your condition s today any skip?????
Dang you close to where I lived. I lived in Bristol VA and had a small setup for a while. Had a Galaxy SSB with a KLV 503 mobile linear and a A99 antenna.
I had to look it up, 5,455 miles from SC to Trinidad. Is your connection power or skip? With the possible exception of Puerto Rico, it's a straight line over the water so I'm thinking it could be line of sight.
I would say it was propagation. My guess is that even though it is mostly water between locations the earth's curve over that distance would consume line of sight.
Hello I love your videos keep up the good work. I wonder if you could give me some advice? I want to set up a base station but I rent and I need some help with an antenna setup. I have a small deck that I think is a good spot for an antenna. I'm trying to figure out how to mount an antenna without drilling in to the house like a clamp of some sort to go on the railing any ideas would be greatly appreciated. My plan is to use a mobile am/ssb cb. I'm new to this and don't know what the best option would be for the best performance while also keeping it temporary so to speak. T.I.A.
Welcome to the hobby Patrick. there are a few antennas you could try. an antron 99 on a short pole, and set into a sturdy umbrella base. or if you want something a little smaller, a workman B100 39" base antenna would also work. Firestick makes a good indoor antenna, but it's expensive. a dipole in the attic will work great for skip, but not so good for local. do a Google search, You may find something even better. Take care, I hope You can get on the air soon. 73's from 151 SC.
