  • ARTISTS & SCIENTISTS WINGING IT TOGETHER: Strategizing for Avian Conservation
Sunday January 14, 2024 from 4 to 5:30 pm PST
How can artists, scientists, and conservationists work together to create effective strategies for the protection of bird species? Each of our presenters will share about their field of expertise related to bird conservation and their varied approaches for engaging the public. A lively discussion about the synergy of art, science, and cultural change will follow, moderated by Lauren Elder.
    Panelists include:
Jane Kim, Artist and Exhibition Juror: Jane received a BFA degree from the Rhode Island School of Design and a master’s certificate in science illustration. She has created large-scale public art across the country, including the “Wall of Birds” at The Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
Ryan Carle, Marine Biologist, lecturer at UCSC, Science Director: Ryan grew up at Mono Lake and has made it his life's work to research and protect the migratory birds that need Mono Lake to survive. He studies seabird ecology and collaborates with artists and scientists to create innovative solutions for seabird habitat restoration and conservation. As science director for Oikonos Ecosystem Knowledge, he has worked at Owen’s Lake, Mono Lake, Great Salt Lake, and in Chile. Ryan also teaches the Natural History of Birds at University of California, Santa Cruz.
Maya Khosla, Wildlife Biologist, writer, poet, filmmaker: Maya advocates for leaving natural forests standing after they have been burned-welcoming an abundance of wildlife, especially birds. “Because fire is feared and much misunderstood, forests are clear-cut or heavily logged after wildfire…but post-fire forests of the American West are among our richest and most biologically diverse-when they are left undisturbed!” Her work takes her to wilderness areas, to the page and to the screen.
Arthur Firstenberg, Scientist, researcher, author and journalist: Arthur is an expert on the subject of electromagnetic radiation and the health of biological life on the planet. Founder of the Cellular Phone Task Force, he posts in the newsletter about global EMR impacts on birds. He is the author of Microwaving Our Planet: The Environmental Impact of the Wireless Revolution and The Invisible Rainbow: A History of Electricity and Life (Chelsea Green 2020), among others.
