A few more things to consider when getting a box truck: decide if you want a truck with a sleeper or just a local day cab, and with a liftgate or not. Some companies have a policy not to let any trucks with liftgates use their docks since a dock lock can't engage without a crossbar. On the other hand, a liftgate works when freight needs to be stowed with a pallet jack up into or out of the cargo box to or from ground level. I've seen a truck back section that had a liftgate with a custom attachable/detachable crossbar- a really nice setup. Consider jack stand supports for the back of the truck, either manual or the much easier hydraulic, even available with a remote control now. Some companies won't load or unload freight in the dock without them when their hilo policy forbids them from driving on it. Avoiding range anxiety is easier with a 100 gal. fuel tank and 12 gal. def tank, not the smaller 85 gal. with 6 gal. def tank. To avoid fuel problems, the truck should never be run with less than 20 gals. in the tank anyhow, so subtract 20 gals. from those capacities when figuring range at an average of 7 to 10 mpg. DOT rules state if you travel more than a 150-mile radius from your home base, you must have an ELD in the cab. Get log books to record your hours of service every day anyhow. Keep a folder in the cab with important documents in easy reach to show if ever needed. Carry engine fluids and some basic tools, and spare lightbulbs for the front, back, and side marker lights. Have a tire pressure gauge for checking air pressure- the truck inspection stations in some states now use remote sensors to tell if your tires are low on air. If you really want to jump hoops, carry an extra wheel and tire setup matched to your truck and ready to go- it's not if you get a flat, it's when. Getting a class B and/or a hazmat endorsement and/or a Canada/Mexico license and there's extra money paid, the test with a background check isn't that hard except for the application fees for do-overs. The B class license lets you move 33,000 lbs GVW if bidding on heavier loads. For example, the Freightliner M2 13'6" tall 28-foot box truck without a liftgate is about 19,000 lbs, so the load can be up to 14,000 lbs (legally).😮
Measure at the door width and height. Measure in the trailer width and height. Always gonna be a difference by a in or 2. I left my damn pallet jack in Dallas last weekend🤦🏿🤦🏿🤦🏿🤦🏿gotta call them and see if they ain't give it to somebody else.
I made a promise to myself, after working at Nordstroms wharehouse and Levi's, i made a promise i would never go back to warehouse jobs. I was doing electronics tech work. Lost that job, and started this class.
When ya truck derates u gotta pullover and do a Regen. Most of the times ya filters are clogged when that happens. Changing ya def and dpf filters when you need to is key. I recommend changing them when you do ya oil change. If not maybe a few miles later. That door clearance is key. 13'6 is necessary. My clearance is 102" at the door and 104" in the trailer. Def need swing doors.
OTR said I have something in past background check. Does anyone know of a factoring company. That will deal with someone having a background ?? Porter?
Do you know what is regulation length of entire truck to rear of box? I heard it was by state to state. But I’m unable to find out. 40’ to 60’ I was told but would like to know where to lookup state regulations. I might get a sleeper small 40” with 28 foot box on it. Most likely ok but might go over 40. Az nm tx states I’m looking to know I’ll be legal.
As always another great video Big Vic, I would like to throw a gem out there go and purchase some lock caps put one on your fuel tank and DEF tank I paid under $200 for both was one of the best investments ever with diesel prices rising you want to protect that fuel 💪🏾
Im 21 years old first time as a owner operator I got my llc and ein I was going to rent a 26ft box truck and I was wondering if Amazon relay was a good place to start working if not do you have any ideas on delivery jobs I should done
I wouldn't suggest starting with Amazon Relay as it can be unreliable at times. Get on some load boards and freshen up your negotiation skills. UShip is pretty good too. 👍 Good luck!
You forgot to let viewers know to make sure they get a truck with the E-track so they can use straps. Keep up the good work V
Always hustle never stop going. Following those footsteps Big Vic.
Yo Big Vic we hit our first loads last week and had a ball bro!! Strong arming these highways and byways!! Thanks big dog!! 🙏🏽💪🏽
Respect I’m in Lancaster SC bout to hit the road box trucking Monday!
