Tim you really need a 4 series tractor. I was in awe of how much power the tractor had. The large rear tires sure would make for a smoother ride. Awesome job on showing the difference sizes of tractors that JOHN DEERE offers.

Aera-Vator tip:
One thing I have found when seeding in loose soil is to run backwards with it. It may still push some soil but not as much.
For the seeding rate- Calibration is important but you can get really close by following the seed rate chart in the manual. I have seen you plant tall fescue before so I’m gonna assume that’s what was going down. My book doesn’t give a rate for it but it is very close in size to perennial rye. 8-10 lbs per 1000 needs a setting of 64 to 68 for a single pass at 2 mph. I’ve been running at a 51 and doing a double pass to achieve the same rate at 2 mph. Love the vids you guys do!
All those tractors and little Vinny had to come in and clean up and do the finish work. The straw chopper did a nice job. Ill be looking forward to the return episode to see the results of your work.

In a dairy operation some farmers use straw in the grinder to add some roughage with corn and hey for calves.

On box blades... I'd really like to see how you'd like using a box blade with a hydraulic T&T (top and tilt) kit on the 3PH. That really improves on the fly adjustments of the box blade versus constantly having to stop the tractor, get off the seat, and manually adjust the standard top link and/or the 3PH side to side adjustments. The hydraulic top link in particular makes it so easy to make super fine fore and aft adjustments to the pair of blades on the box blade. This allows you to easily adjust how much the box blade is digging up material or, conversely, spreading out material versus trying to lift and lower the entire box blade with the 3PH position control. Using the tilt function on the 3PH also makes it really easy to do sloping or crowning operations with the box blade. Hopefully you can convince the CFO to approve the funds for a T&T kit and test it out for us some day.
Workin on it. Will be next year.

I live near West Salem Ohio, it is about the same way, small town, old buildings, etc.
Well the same goes for all small towns. They are purposely managed that way to keep traffic low and cost of living low too.
in fact, animals DO eat straw as well. especially dairy cows that eat a lot of silage (or even entirely) need additional sources of crude fiber to keep their digestive system in balance. nowadays a lot of dairy farms feed a so called total mixed ration (TMR) which has all the ingredients in it. so the straw might already be in this mixed up feed making it a bit harder to recognize it as straw.
We use a straw blower like that but it has little caster wheeles on it dna a electric motor so we can bed down the dairy cows in the barn
I have same straw blower what I do is put it on tail of 6 x 10 trailer stack a dozen bales in front and put the full bale in if it is string baled chopper will cut strings and all .Dont use bales with metal wire
I have a neighbor that gives hay rides with actual hay sometimes
Straw blowers are great. The best ones let you drop an entire bale in. Also there are models that don't have a hose. The one I owned with my landscape business was mounted on a custom made trailer that we pulled behind a truck.
This one would take a whole bale but the human horsepower was not there after a long day.

I have a straw blower like yours, i mounted it on a 5x10 trailer .that way i can pull it with a tractor or side-by-side, and i have room to stand and stack straw next to it.

Because of the cost of straw today, I seed and put a light coating of top soil on top, I water as normal and the grass comes up in about a week.. With straw it tends to attract birds,top soil doesent..
Does the Ventrac roll out sod rolls. Only rule with sod is Green side up. Growing grass is not always easy or cheaper. I have never heard anyone complain about sod not growing. Just a thought. Thanks for all the great videos. Russ Esko, Minnesota.

A straw blower saves lots of time but it's a three person job if your trying to make time and use a crimper to pack it in

mostly tall turf type fescue and some ryegrass.
It is an interesting to see and consider using a straw blower. I didn't have a seeder and rented a hydroseeder to spread seed, mulch and fertilizer in the same pass. It was a one person operation. Used tractor to pull hydroseeder trailer, to parts of property i was seeding (about 1 acre of my 5). Learned to have less hose reeled out, less hose weight to fight. Think it saved time and cost was manageable.
Trailer tank size is around 500 gallon, water fill time can be a factor depending on volume and pressure capacity fill time could offer some rest time. I filled tank and spread 5 loads. This may not be a thing with straw. Hydroseeder with each load water is the part u run out of first. At the end u end up with a decent amount of product to rince out and or add water and find a place to spray. I would rent and use again.

The straw blower happens to remind me of a bark/mulch blower that I've seen landscapers using. Finished product looked really good.

God will handle the watering...eventually. That is the reason for planting in late fall. The straw will hold that moisture so that the grass can get started.

I'm sneezing just watching you blow straw.. You're correct about the matting for sure. We've pulled it out of ditches that was pulled 10+ years ago and most of the string is still there. We call it the grade finder, because it worked back then it should work for grade now.

I just put down 50 lbs of Kentucky 31 with a hand seeder and covered it with straw by hand. I’m very tired.
Small towns are struggling, I live in one, 1300 people, but with all this violence and unpredictable behavior from city politicians I think you will see the small towns begin to grow.

Honestly, your jobs with a tractor come out better than most of the jobs done by dozer and excavator around here.

I would like to see a close up of straw machine and how it works. Did he rent that or is that purchased? If so, how much? It looks like a neat tool/implement.
In our area there have been several like-new units on Craigslist selling for around $3000. Most places around here rent them for $125-$150 per day. In addition to the Honda engine units, I believe they also make units that are powered by the PTO. If you are seeding a large area they are THE mack daddy way to spread straw.

That seeder needs to be ran backwards. The rollers need to push the seed in the soil for the seed to soil contact. The seeder looks like it's more of a 3 point attachment behind a tractor which would in turn, roll the seed into the ground.
There is a roller behind the shaker wheels. Fully intended to operate going forward.
How much cheaper was blowing the straw than to buy the netted blankets?
Im convinced blowing straw may be a better way but how much cheaper?
Much cheaper! But the worst part is that straw may blow away with the wind.
Hard to hold it down. Blankets can be tacked down.

Does the crimping actually hold down the straw from blowing in the wind or is that just fantasy? Im thinking of using the straw in a hydroseeder but not that would prob mess up the pump or something?

@@TractorTimewithTim It has another reason than nutritional, we do it in Sweden as well, (we did it on our family farm all the time)
It is to keep their stomachs working better, mix it in with they hay, also if you mix with a feed wagon that's the same
The heifers seems weirdly enough to enjoy to eat only straw sometimes, and when you have cows that is put on lesser feed rations before giving birth, it is often mixed like that too

I had a horse when I was younger and if I used oat straw he would eat it, but he would not eat wheat straw.
I leave my chopper on the trailer with the straw. Unless too tight of an area.
I liked Illinois but you’re right it’s hard on the business owners there, we had one go under. We lived in Palmyra which was kind of near Carlinville and Girard and Virden. Big problem there is the taxes apparently Chicago is bankrupt so they just keep raising everybody’s taxes over and over and over, we had to move because we were tired of paying $200 a month to the state in taxes on our own property that we owned, in Tennessee we pay about $300 instead of $2800That we had to pay in Illinois. :/ There is some increased now that they opened the coal mines back up but I was in southern Illinois a little below Springfield kind of in between there in St. Louis and when the Maytag factory and the coal mine shut down it brought our local unemployment up to about 50+ percent and it was bad for a lot of years during the last administration. I don’t think the Maytag came back but some of the coal industry is back up and that helped but it’s still a little rough and the taxes are still ridiculously high for country and farmland. I hope they can get that under control and things get better for people, I love the people there and they deserve better. Country insurance was one of the only successful businesses in town where I lived in Illinois. Lol. We had our property insurance through them.
