- Can they do it?
Starship's 4th Flight will be in about 2 weeks.
SpaceX needs to get through max reentry heating.
NO ONE has ever succeeded in creating a fully reusable heat shield.
The Shuttle required over 6 months of rework!
Hi! I am now FULL TIME Ellie in SPACE!

Thanks Ellie, good info. Enjoy Florida while you are here. Fingers crossed for Flight 4
I would argue with Grok's statement that reentry "has not been fully overcome with a reusable heat shield", as the Shuttle's heat shield was reusable, albeit with significant safety inspections in between. But on an average launch only about ~100 tiles out of 24,000+ tiles would have to be replaced.
So, would you give Grok a B plus?
@@ellieinspace I'd even push it up to A-. Everything else it said was pretty accurate to my eye, and I've seen people making that claim because the Shuttle heatshield did require repair between flights (Although from all appearances so far, it's looking like Starship will as well, though possibly much faster and easier repairs).
Waiting and will watch from afar. Enjoy your travels, and I hope they are productive.
@@Fryguy101 the shuttle’s heat shield consisted of thousands of parts, I think that makes it hard to make the claim the heat shield was “reusable”. Don’t get me wrong the shuttle was certainly a reusable spacecraft, but its heat shield was not.
@@quokka7555 Starship's heat shield also consists of thousands of parts.
And the parts of the Shuttle's heat shield determined to be undamaged after inspection were all reused, which would be the vast majority of them on any given flight.
Thanks for the SpaceX news update. Plenty going on to get excited about again and hopefully Flight 4 will indeed happen in early June.
Wish I could attend but my work schedule doesn't allow that currently. My work involves a non-Space-X LEO project and we're trying to stay on schedule for a 2024 launch... BUT you can bet I'll be watching and rooting for Space-X. Go Elon!
All good Things are 4! Alle guten Dinge sind 4. Let us surprised!
Actually they don’t HAVE to get anything done on IFT 4 as long as they improve and get useful data this specific flight is not vital.
Can SpaceX do thing?! Yes. Eventually.
True… even if they get to the same stage as flight 3 I’ll be happy 👍
They have a contract for Artemis. Which they are already years behind. Literally nothing else matters other than passing the milestones they have been paid to achieve.
If there is need to meet those milestones, they should hand back the $$
Can't wait for Flight 4 and hope for gorgeous weather on launch day. I think if SpaceX manages to keep Ship 29 in the correct orientation during re-entry and the heat shield stays mostly intact the ship will make it through re-entry. I hope we get video through the entire flight/ down to the ocean this time.
Cant wait for disaster #4..should be fun
So waiting for a successful fourth flight, I’ll be following you in Florida.
Next IFT will be in about 2 weeks EST Elon Standard Time.
Thanks Ellie
Great update Ellie!
Great update.
It’s looking like 2 weeks is about right given where they are at with testing.
Two things that were apparent in the 3rd flight of Starship. 1) Control surface area. 2) control surface reaction time
Those little "wings" on Starship seem pretty small and slow to react to entry turbulence and wind-shear.
I started following you in your Starlink days because I live in the sticks. Ironically my town's internet was so bad it got a federal grant to string fiber for the whole place. My gig+ fiber connection turned on the same day I got accepted in to Starlink beta, which, of course I had to pass on. I still follow your channel, keep up the good work!
Thanks! Great point by Joe Tegtmeyer too! SpaceX is going to have to deal with the front to rear masses and getting the centre of gravity in the right zone for starship to enter the atmosphere without tumbling over and over and over.
Won't be long before we'll have High School Science projects going into space on a regular schedule. That is,
if Schools even Teach Science anymore.
thank Ellie for keeping us up to date.
Love these update videos. Great work Ellie 👍
The Apollo program had a goal and a deadline, to land on the moon by the end of the decade. Besides building and testing Apollo NASA was also launching Gemini missions. SpaceX doesn't have a deadline but it does have a goal, landing on Mars. I hope they test and retest everything. I'm praying there is no Apollo 1 or Apollo 13 incidents. Time is on SpaceX side but the unknown isn't.
I think we are 2 weeks away from a 10 second abort
Thanks Ellie. Safe travels.
Attending IFT 4? No. But if IFT 5 will feature a return to the launch tower, I'll be there if possible.
I don't know if the catch attempt would be in IFT-5 (especially since it's determined by when they can controll the booster to a virtual landing.) But whenever that first catch is attempted, it would be a sight to see for sure
I can't remember how many Starships they said they were going to launch this year, but by the middle of May, we are still waiting on # 4. (the second this year), Not looking like they will reach their target in 2024.
thanks Ellie🤩
Considering how well SS did in the WDR, yep. 2 weeks sounds doable. Although, Texas Summer Gulf Coast storms might get a vote.
I gambled and booked my lodging for port isabelle. Will be there 5/28 to 6/9 - keeping positive on launch in 2 weeks. I dont see much holding them back with the WDR completed, aside from heat shield tile replacements.
Great video, yours keep getting better. I just sub'ed! But been watching for a long time. My guess on Starship (Staeship, lol) is 4 weeks. It's crucial and they want everything perfect, even the weather.
Great job you video are getting even better and love to watch you.
All four Starship flight tests had their stated primary goals, and three out of three so far have met those goals. Not to be confused with the idealized flight plans. This is the first test where I actually feel the stated goal is probably too lofty. If absolutely nothing else, fallen tiles seem likely to doom the goal. Ship 29 never underwent any new tile application process, so the odds are pretty good that tiles will dislodge along the seams in particular. I feel that a more realistic goal would be to attempt reentry with Starship at its correct orientation-something I have confidence it will achieve. It will sure be exciting to see how close to splashdown it gets before signal loss.
Thank you ellie
"SpaceX currently dominates the global payload to orbit... Showing the company has launched 87% of the world's payload to orbit."
Yes, if you count Starlink, which is like buying millions of copies of your own book to make it on the New York Times Best Sellers list.
A city on Mars...lol
Hi Ellie, thanks for the update. Nearly 100k!
Really, people still have Ukrainian flags in support of Coke head Zelensky? Ok… ?
Thanks for summarizing so much information and keeping us informed about all things Elon🇺🇸🇺🇸
Nice video
Space is hard
Joe is right. Starship’s orientation did not look right entering the atmosphere.
It might not be two weeks but it may be a few weeks, judging by past patterns.
The fully reusable heat shield which won't require repair and refurbishment after each flight will be a huge achievement for SpaceX. It may be overly optimistic to think it will be accomplished on this fourth flight, after all the shield has only been put to the test once to date. But no doubt progress will be made.
SpaceX has some big issues to solve to get to where they need to be to have Lunar Starship in operation. Rapid turnaround of their vehicles will require solving the heat shield problem. They have to achieve landings of both the booster and the ship. They have to solve orbital propellent storage and Starship refueling. All these problems will be solved but it seems doubtful that they can do it in time to meet the schedule for Artemis. There will be blame placed on the FAA for slowing down the SpaceX launches but in all fairness they have to be careful given the size of the rocket that is being tested.
So demanding that Starship survive reentry this flight and land perfect, its still in the RnD stage. Full reusability has never been done before for on an orbital class rocket especially one this big. Everyone relax, SpaceX will get there. They will meet each challenge and rapidly innovate to overcome it and move on to the next.
It’s not demanding or a matter of people relaxing… people are only operating off the timelines Musk gives them.
@@quokka7555 Never go off Elon time, way too hyper optimistic. Reality is always a segway 😅
Starship will get there.
I'm guessing that all the close airbnb's and hotel rooms will be reserved instantly so I'm not even going to try.😭
ILT-4 within 2 wks.? Yes.
I firmly believe SpaceX will get there and I firmly believe they will be working the heat shield tech for a couple more years. And it will be worth it. What I see in Elons companies is that willingness to iterate on a product much longer than others (and publicly!!). I am not allowed to do this where I work (not even close) and it hurts our ability to maximize production. Go SpaceX!!
You are aware the shuttle had a tile system which flew for 30 years. Also the 6 month inspection between flights was a Musk lie. Here are some, (not all) shuttle flights and the time spread between launches for the same orbitor,. Keep in mind this includes moving from the OPF to the VAB. Stacking process, Move from VAB to the PAD. Weeks of prep at the pad. Ellie and many here need to do their own research and not take Musk's word for anything. Musk has the habit of rewriting history.

Question. At what point is Starship Earth reentry equivalent to Mars reentry? Mars atmosphere way thinner. If starship does not make it all the way through earth's atmosphere, in theory it could make it through mars atmosphere?
Ither way its the future knocking with the planets are at the front door
June 2nd or 4th
This could be the last launch of this year if all doesn't go right.
I wish spacex would post in detail the problems there are having with their heat shields, so we, the enthusiastic supporters, can offer our suggestions.
I'm not an engineer, but I've been a mechanic for 40+ years, and I've made thousands of things work in unconventional ways.
Maybe someone out there has the answer that spacex is searching for.
Here is a crazy idea. Study what they did with shuttle for 30 years. Its heat shield issues were because the orbiter was on the side of the stack, not the top. Also note, these launch time spreads indicate it did not take 6 months to check the shuttle tiles, another Musk lie which no one here researched.

Your missing the point in rapid reusablity. They want to land refuel and re fly in a couple hours.
Every one knows this is a hard problem. Is it impossible to fix ?
We don't know. But elon is going to try.
And listening all the shuttle turn around times doesn't impress upon anyone or reinforce your accusation of lies. It just makes you look like a hateful FREAK.
We should be about 3 weeks away. I don't think any launch has launched at the time Elon estimated. We may be closede4 to 4 weeks and it will be blamed on the FFA although SpaceX will be changing parts up to the last minute. Maybe a Juneteenth launch.
I think so it’s been a while
Stoke space is trying to make reusable heat shield, but they don't have NASA that forced them to switch from actively cooled metal heat shield to conventional heat tiles.
Wrong. NASA is not forcing Starship to use tiles. If they did, they would have told SpaceX to use the same system of attaching.
@@pebmets No, NASA initially has cold attitude towards ITS / BFR / Starship because of the transpiration cooling was going to be used on a crewed vehicle. To better align with NASA's very cautious approach, SpaceX switched to heat tiles.
It's like that time Elon wants Dragon to have propulsive landing capability, but NASA wasn't interested, forcing SpaceX to switch to water landing.
@@1ndragunawan Maybe NASA knows better? You don't think they have ever looked into the ideas SpaceX is trying to use? My point, if NASA was controlling the tiles, they probably would have used the same method used for shuttle to attach instead of the brackets which seem SpaceX is having issues with.
As a side note, I believe NASA would have recommend not to go with stainless steel, but that is another story.
@@pebmets NASA gives high level requirements, the details were given to companies to figure out themselves.
Transpiration cooling has low level TRL, while both heat tiles and ablative shields have high level TRL.
There were the Atlas rockets that used balloon stainless steel construction, so it's a high TRL construction material.

Why file patents when the country guaranteed to steal the ideas aren't going to be arsed by international law?

Has anyone had their girlfriends get jealous/passive aggressive about listening to Ellie?
Musk lied about how long it took to go over the heat tiles on the shuttle between flights. Please look over the shuttle launch record and you will see there are many instances where the same orbiter was used in less than 6 months which proves it did not take as long as Musk claims to check out all of the tiles. With multiple orbiters, they would rotate so you may not get the same orbiter launching again within 6 months just by the fact there were no missions ready in that time.
Can we stop pretending that SpaceX is the one who developed heat tiles. Shuttle used them and contrary to what Musk said, it did not take 6 months to check out the whole tile system as shown below.
When the same oritor flew back to back mission, it was never 6 months as Musk claimed. Below is only the same orbitor flew back to back proving how long it took to check and replace tiles was less than 6 months. All other times when the fleet was 3 (After Columbia Accident) or 4, the same Orbitor very rarely flew back to back mIssions but there were instances where the same orbitor flew again in 6 months or less).
The only exception was after Columbia, Discovery flew STS-114 (Return to flight) and STS-121 a year apart
