- BERLIN IN THE 1920s ... A time of change, a time of upheaval. Paul von Pryzgodski (David Bowie, Labyrinth) was a young man whose life had led him to expect heroism, but instead, he found failure - failure in the Great War, failure at trying to find a career, failure at nearly every relationship that comes his way until he meets the Baroness and discovers there is one profession at which he can excel.
This offbeat German melodrama directed by David Hemmings stars David Bowie as Paul, a young Prussian War veteran who returns home to Berlin after World War I. After drifting from job to job, Paul eventually finds his niche renting himself out as a dancer for war widows who long to forget their sadness. Kim Novak (Vertigo) sizzles as a sad widow, with German bombshell Maria Schell as Paul’s mother and Sydne Rome as his old sweetheart-turned-cabaret singer. Marlene Dietrich makes a poignant cameo (it was her last film role) as an aging baroness, singing the title song, aka Schoner Gigolo, armer Gigolo.
Director: David Hemmings
Cast: David Bowie, Kim Novak, Sydne Rome

This film was produced by Rolf Thiele (1918-1994), a German director, screenwriter and producer who has made many successful films for the German-speaking market (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) since 1949. He was born in the Czech Republic and studied philosophy and sociology in Prague. Since November 1, 1938, since the Czech Republic was incorporated into the German Reich, he was a member of the NSDAP. He had no connection to German film production during the Nazi era. Thiele had a talent for humorous sexual topics. "Just a Gigolo" was his last film work. The film was directed by the British David Hemmings. From the beginning to the end it was more of a British project than a German one. The film was made in Berlin, but the idea came from Hemmings and Bowie themselves. The music was recorded by the British big band "Pasadena Roof Orchestra". An international team wrote the script. German film critics saw "Just a Gigolo" as a successor to "Cabaret" (1972) and predicted it would be as unsuccessful as Ingmar Bergman's "The Snake's Egg" from 1977 with David Carradine and Liv Ullmann. Sydne Rome is not Liza Minelli and the similarly crazy music is missing. "Just a Gigolo" was seen in Germany as an attempt to cash in on Nazi kitsch, a story about Horst Wessel (1907-1930), the martyr of the NSDAP in the fight against the communists (the role of Bowie).
excellent release with CD and glossy booklet...very exciting.
Any Bowie music on it? What was it released?
I have the movie on dvd and it comes with a booklet.shout factory llc has the movie on dvd.it is an excellent copy.glad I bought it.i never saw this movie before.it is worth a look.well produced well acted good period atmosphere and flavor.it isn't a great movie but not a bad one.
Not Bowie's finest moment.
They got Marlene Dietrich out of retirement. I found that to be worth the price of admission. (I saw it in its first theatrical run.)
Ken Russell should have directed.
looks tedious
It is uneven and muddled.but it is worth a look.
