    Honest mechanics like Toby are at a premium. Always nice to hear a mechanic tell you what is real bad and what can wait just ahead. Those types deserve customers business because you know they aren't out to screw the customer. Honesty is refreshing every so often.

      Hah ! when you buy an old motor all you want is for it to go for as long as possible, anything that works properly is a bonus, it’s a motor to go to work in, if it passes it’s statutory test it’s a go !

      He may not be after the customer. But the advice he gives is not accurate. You can’t just look at a shock or strut and know if it is good or not. I replaced 2 on my car a while ago and both looked perfect with no rust and perfect paint still. But on my gfs car they were rusted to hell and worked perfect.

    As a licenced Tech for over 30 yrs with GM Toby did what we normally call a regular quick visual inspection or 50pt inspection. It's a quick once over that a Tech would perform if someone was thinking of possibly purchasing a old beater for winter or something most certainly not a full DOT safety. He would have to be a pretty good Tech to work on German cars they are highly engineered and have very close tolerances and strict service intervals. I know my dad is also a retired mechanic with 50 years fixing Porsche Audi VW and any vehicle that would come in for service-repairs.

      Not necessarily. If your old car is a worthless pile, then you either should get the cheapest guy possible, or do the work yourself. Otherwise, you'll just be throwing good many after bad. This is because, for many old cars, the repairs total the value of the car. Remember that before you start digging yourself into a hole and wasting your money.

    Aaaauuggghhhhhh!!! Can’t wait to see what the deficiencies are!! Hahaha
    Now that I have seen the video, it’s not as bad as I thought. I was very worried about the Mazda (Ford) when Andre bought it,,,,,,,, and I’m generally a Ford guy! The Jeep, no surprises. I did the heater core in one though. You take the dash out to get there!! In the dealership my buddy was quoted over $2,000 CAD to replace the core, by the time we were done, we both wished he had spent the money!! Haha. What a PIA! That Blazer will fail you somewhere,,,,,,,. They looked decent and drove quite well. A few guys had ZR2 blazers like Nathan wanted and they were capable, but fragile.
    This is a good series though. Routine maintenance and getting the issues fixed when they generally should be is why that Jeep is pretty decent. The clean transmission oil is a give away kinda. Did that to sell it and do so right after changing it so it doesn’t smell burnt. They cleared the codes on the transmission and then they returned from Tommy driving it home. They will be back, I’m sure! Haha. It’s not the worst though,,,,, even the TFL team had learned when they got the black Dodge!!! I think Nathan and Andre were a bit too blinded when they found a running example of what they wanted, especially Andre,,,, haha. Tommy was pretty analytical and got his purchase. It pays to not be too emotional when you go to look at a vehicle,,,,, I know from experience!!
    Andre, Nathan,,,,, I can definitely sympathize!! I have been blinded up front by getting what I wanted and not looking close enough. Fortunately I restore the older vehicles I buy but it always means much more work!! Haha.
    Great series TFL!! Now if you would release each of the already edited videos one per day the rest of this week,,,,,,,,,,,???

    • @codylapoint
      @codylapoint 2 роки тому

      Me too, the problem is that there is no gasket on the housing itself. The gasket is on the thermostat with an indexing tab on it. If you look really close that tab favors one side of the thermostat ( the side away from the motor. It lines up with a little notch in the plastic neck piece, and if you have the gasket on backwards even with the notch clocked properly it will still leak a few drips every now and then. It took me a lot of swearing over several weeks to notice that the tab wasn't in the exact center of the gasket and it could in fact be put on backwards. Why they even put that stupid tab on there makes no sense to me it doesn't help it seal it does a better job causing it not to.

      No scrap yard is going to pay anywhere close to $2,500 for these. Also, when you add up all the repairs and differed maintenance on the Mazda and the Blazer, they're likely totaled, so they're not even worth wrenching. The Jeep might be the only bargain. Not only because it's in relatively good shape, but I think it's worth more than $2,550.

    I'm WAY late, but a few points on the WJ:
    - Check the rear brake hard line, along the un rail just before the drivers rear wheel. Even if the rest of the line looks great, there's one turn there that they ALWAYS break. Best to know now, rather than later!. It's a few inches up from where the first rubber line for the rear goes. Every WJ we've had has had this spot fail even if the rest of the line looked perfect.
    - For the transmission, I'd do a fluid and filter service. These have two things that can occur - one, the panel filter sometimes people leave behind the old gasket/oring and it causes issues, second, there is a spin on internal filter that can come loose if not properly installed. That can cause line pressure issues, as fluid will bleed out of the loose spin on rather than circulate. Seen both.
    - The transmissions are also susceptible to electrical issues, mainly many of the grounds on WJ's like to break, which though rare, can cause issues, so if a fluid/filter service doesn't fix the codes, good to go over grounds.
    At one point we had 3 2004 WJ's in the family, all slightly different configurations. Two 4.7s, one I6. We still have one WJ in the family and my old one is with a friend, and the third one I sold to a neighbor down the street. I kinda miss 'em! Been awhile since I did a WJ video but hopefully these tidbits are helpful to you!

      I have a feeling 1 of the TCC control springs in the trans pump is broken, especially at 200k+ miles it's common. It won't allow the converter to lock up properly in 4th gear so the clutches in the converter are getting worn quickly and get hot. it can also cause low line pressure especially when cold. It may start to overheat at freeway speeds if they become too worn but should perform fine otherwise
